  RESEARCH_NOTES: 1. Relationship mentioned in the 29 Mar 1597 will of father Thomas Sanford. 2. An extremely valuable reference book on this family is "Thomas Sanford, the emigrant to New England; ancestry, life, and descendants, 1632-4," by Carlton E. Sanford (Tuttle Company: Rutland, Vermont, 1911). It contains a thorough examination and report of the English church records, lay subsidies, and probate for this family. Mary's husband's will mentions: "I ordayne and appoynt my brother Rychard Sanford & my brothersinlaw John Mellett & John Lewes overseers of this my p'sent last will desyring them to take the chardge uppo them and towards their payns therein to be taken I geve to each of them three shillings fower pence apece." Mary's maiden name may be Lewes or Mellett. Alternately, they may be husbands of unknown previously deceased sisters to Thomas Sanford.
