“JOAN ARUNDEL. She married (1st) WILLIAM DE BRYAN (or BRIAN), Knt., of Kemsing and Seale, Kent, Batheaston, Downhead, Kingsdon, and Shockerwick (in Bathford), Somerset, and Woodmansterne, Surrey, Captain of Merk Castle in the Marches of Calais, 2nd son of Guy de Bryan, KG., Lord Bryan, of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire, Clifton Dartmouth and Hardness and Slapton, Devon, Woodsford, Dorset, etc., by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth, daughter of William de Montagu, Knt., 1st Earl of Salisbury, 3rd Lord Montagu, Marshal of England [see CAREW 10.ii for his ancestry]. They had no issue. In the period, 1390-5, he complained to the king and the lords in Parliament that Sir John Devereux had "estranged him from his inheritance" while he was in the king's service. SIR WILLIAM DE BRYAN died 23 Sept. 1395, and was buried at Seale, Kent. His widow, Joan, was assigned dower 1 Dec. 1397. She married (2nd) before 22 Feb. 1401 (grant of land) (as his 2nd wife) WILLIAM ECHINGHAM (or ECHYNGHAM), Knt., of Etchingham and Udimore, Sussex,* son of William de Echingham, Knt., of Etchingham, Sussex, by his wife, Elizabeth. They had one son, Thomas, Knt. In 1401 he and his wife, Joan, were granted 102 acres of arable land, 22 acres of wood, and rents in Benenden, Kent by the king. She was a legatee in the 1401 will of Agnes Arundel, widow of her brother; William Arundel, K.G. His wife, Joan, died 1 Sept. 1404. SIR WILLIAM ECHINGHAM died 20 March 1412/13 (or 30 Dec. 1413).
