Carlow, Ireland, etc., Sheriff of Cork, King's Escheator in Ireland, 1349, 1352, 1355-6, Justiciar of Ireland, 1349-50. He married (1st) MARGARET DE MOHUN, daughter of John de Mohun, Knt., of Dunster, Somerset, Goring, Oxfordshire, Long Compton and Whichford, Warwickshire, etc., by Christian, daughter of John de Segrave, 2nd Lord Segrave [see MOHUN 12 for her ancestry]. They had five sons, Leonard, Knt. [Baron Carew], John, Nicholas, William, and Edward. He was heir in 1324 to his older helf-brother, Nicholas de Carew. He was summoned to Ireland to defend his estates in 1332. In 1345-6 he was appointed one of the three 'custodes pacis' for the county of Carlow, Ireland. About the same time he was entrusted to negotiate with the Irish rebels. About 1359 he was summoned to attend a great council at Waterford. He married (2nd) ELIZABETH CORBET. In 1361 he was called to Westminster to consult on the projected Irish expedition of Lionel, afterwards Duke of Clarence. SIR JOHN DE CAREW died in 1362, or 16 May 1363. His widow, Elizabeth, married (2nd) before 18 April 1368 (date of presentation) JOHN DE GOURNAY, Knt. He presented to the church of Mamhead, Devon in 1368, in right of his wife, Elizabeth.
