“HUGH COURTENAY, Knt., of Goodrington (in Paignton), South Allington, and Stancombe (in Sherford), Devon, Cotton, Dorset, and Hinton (in Mudford) and Mudford Terry, Somerset, and, in right of his 3rd wife, Combehill, Combenetherton, Haccombe, Milton (or Middleton), Ringrnore, and Shobrooke, Devon, Knight of the Shire for Devonshire, 1395, 1397, 1421, Sheriff of Devonshire, 1418-19, younger son, born after 1358. He accompanied his uncles, Peter and Philip Courtenay, in the naval expedition of 1378, which was all but destroyed by the Spaniards. He was taken prisoner in the struggle, but was quickly ransomed. He married (1st) shortly after 14 March 1386/7 (date of marriage arrangements) ELIZABETH FITZ PAYN, widow of Thomas de Audley, Knt. (died before 1 April 1386) [see AUDLEY 11.iii], of Kingston, Devon, and Stogursey, Somerset, and daughter of Robert Fitz Payn (formerly de Grey), Knt., of Stogursey, Bridghampton, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Rodway, etc., Somerset, by Elizabeth, daughter of Guy de Bryan, KG., Lord Bryan [see CODNOR 11.ii for her ancestry]. They had no issue. He served at sea as a member of his brother's retinue from March 1387, under the admiral, Richard de Arundel, Earl of Arundel and Surrey. In 1388 he and his wife, Elizabeth, sued Fulk Fitz Warin, Knt., for dower in the manor of Kingston, Devon. She was living at Michaelmas Term 1389. She reportedly died 1 June 139[2?]. He married (2nd) after 1 July 1392 and before 11 Feb. 1392/3 (date of pardon for marrying without a license) ELIZABETH COGAN, widow of Fulk Fitz Warin, Knt (died 8 August 1391), 5th Lord Fitz Warin [see FITZ WARIN 13], of Whittington, Shropshire, Wantage, Berkshire, etc., and daughter of William Cogan, Knt., of Bampton, Devon, and Huntspill, Somerset, by Isabel, daughter and co-heiress of Nigel (or Neel) Loring, Knt., of Chalgrave, Bedfordshire. She was born about 1374 (aged 8 in 1382). She was heiress in 1382 to her minor brother, John Cogan. They had no surviving issue. She died 29 October 1397. In 1399 he went to Ireland with King Richard II. He married (3rd) before 1407 PHILIPPE L'ARCEDEKNE (or L'ARCEDEAKEN), daughter and co-heiress of Warin l'Arcedekne, Knt., of Elerky (in Veryan), Lanihorne (in Ruan Lanihorne), and Roseworthy (in Gwinear), Cornwall, Haccombe, Devon, etc., by Elizabeth, daughter of John Talbot, Knt. [see RICHARD'S CASTLE 8 for her ancestry]. She was born about 1386 (age 21 in 1407). They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Joan. He presented to the church of Haccombe, Devon in 1409 and 1413. He married (4th) by license dated 16 October 1417 MAUD BEAUMONT, daughter of William Beaumont, Knt, of Heanton Punchardon, Devon, by Isabel, daughter of Henry Wilington, Knt. [see CHAMPERNOUN 13 for her ancestry]. Her maritagium appears to have included the manor of Stalpits (in Shrivenham), Berkshire. They had two sons, Edward, Knt, and Hugh, Knt. SIR HUGH COURTENAY died 5 (or 6) March 1425, and was buried at Haccombe, Devon with his 3rd wife, Philippe. His widow, Maud, died 3 July 1467. She left a will dated 10 Jan. 1466/7 (P.C.C. 20 Godyn).

“RICHARD DE GREY, Knt., 2nd Lord Grey of Codnor, of Codnor and Denby, Derbyshire, Thurrock, Essex, Tunworth and Upton Grey, Hampshire, Aylesford and Hoo, Kent, Evington and Newbold, Leicestershire, Sherringham, Norfolk, Eastwood and Barton, Nottinghamshire, etc., Seneschal of Gascony, Steward of Aquitaine, Constable of Nottingham Castle, son and heir by his father's 1st marriage, born about 1281 or 1282 (aged 26, 26-1/2, or 27 in 1308). He married JOAN FITZ PAYN, daughter of Robert Fitz Payn, Knt., Lord Fitz Payn, by Isabel, daughter of John Clifford, Knt., of Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. They had four sons, John, Knt. [3rd Lord Grey of Codnor], Robert [Fitz Payn], Knt., Gilbert, and Henry, and two daughters, Joan and Maud. He was continually employed in the Scottish wars. In 1323 he was granted 20 does by the king for burying the body of his kinsman, John de Grey, Knt., 2nd Lord Grey of Ruthin. SIR RICHARD DE GREY, 2nd Lord Grey of Codnor, died testate shortly before 10 March 1334/5.

He married before 16 October 1354 ELIZABETH DE BRYAN, daughter of Guy de Bryan, K.G., Lord Bryan, of Laugharne, Carrnarthenshire, Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire, and Torbrian, Devon, by his 1st wife, Joan, daughter of John de Carew, Knt. [see BRYAN 10.ii for her ancestry]. They had two daughters, Isabel and Elizabeth. In 1354 he was in the king's service with Guy de Bryan in parts beyond sea. In 1359 he and his wife, Elizabeth, conveyed the manors of Wraxall, Dorset and Stourton, Wiltshire to John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, and Maud his wife, for the life of Maud, at an annual rent of 200s., with reversion to himself aind Elizabeth, and his heirs. He was with the king in the invasion of France, October 1359 to 1360, serving in the retinue of Sir Guy de Bryan. He presented to the church of Wisley, Surrey in 1387 and 1388. iv. MAUD DE GREY, married (1st) JOHN DE GRAVESENDE, of Gravesend, Kent. He died before 25 July 1332, when her father granted her 401 of rent in his manor of Sheringham, Norfolk, in exchange for the manor of Gravesend, Kent, which she granted him for the term of her life. His widow, Maud, married (2nd) before 1336-7 (date of fine) ROGER DE LOUDHAM, Knt., of Herringfleet and Lound, Suffolk. They had three sons, Roger, John, and Nicholas. In 1332 he acknowledged that he owed 400 to Richard de Grey, of Codnor; to be levied, in default of payment, of his lands and chattels in Suffolk. In 1336-7 Geoffrey de Cotton conveyed the manor of Gunton, Suffolk to him and his wife, Maud. He presented to the church of Gunton, Suffolk in 1346. SIR ROGER DE LOUDHAM died 15 March 1347.
