“BERTHA OF BRITTANY, born about 1119. She married (1st) about 1137 ALAN III the Black, Count of Brittany, Earl of Richmond, seigneur of Tréguier, 2nd son of Stephen (or Etienne), Count of Brittany, by his wife, Hawise [see RICHMOND 4 for his ancestry]. He was born before 1100. They had one son, Conan (IV) [Duke of Brittany, Earl of Richmond] and two daughters, Constance (wife of Alan III, Vicomte of Rohan) and Enoguen (nun at St. Sulpice of Rennes). ALAN III, Count of Brittany, Earl of Richmond died in Brittany 15 Sept. 1146, and was buried at Begard. His widow, Bertha, married (2nd) in or before 1148 (as his 1st wife) EUDON II, Duke/Count of Brittany, Vicomte of Porhoët, seigneur of Josselin, Mohon, la Nouée, la Chèze, Loudeac, Pleucadeuc, Villejagu, etc., son of Geoffrey, Vicomte of Porhoët, by his wife, Hawise. They had one son, Geoffrey, and one daughter, Adelaide [Abbess of Fontevrault]. His wife, Bertha, was living in 1162, and died before 1167. Eudes married (2nd) in or before 1167 ALIENOR DE LEON, daughter of Guiomar, son and heir of Herve, Vicomte (or Count) of Leon. They had two sons, Eudon Fitz Count and Henri, and one daughter, Alix (wife of Guy Mauvoisin, Chev., seigneur of Rosny). Eudon, Count (or Duke) of Brittany, was living in 1185, and presumably died before 1195.

i. EUDON FITZ COUNT, seigneur of Josselin, Mohon, la Chèze, la Nouée, Loudéac, Pleucadeuc, Villejagu, etc., son and heir, of age before 1195. He married MARGUERITE ___. They had three daughters, Mathilde, Elienor (wife of Alan V, Vicomte of Rohan and Pierre de Chemillé), and Jeanne (wife of Olivier de Montauban, seigneur of Montauban). He appears in charters dated variously pre-1195, 1201, 1221, 1225, and 1231. In 1231 he gave property with his body to Marmoutier Abbey for the remembrance of the anniversary of his death. EUDON FITZ COUNT died in 1231. His widow, Marguerite, was living in 1248. “STEPHEN (or ÉTIENNE) OF BRITTANY, Count of Brittany, youngest son. He married HAWISE ___ . They had three sons, Geoffrey Boterel (II) [Count of Brittany], Alan (II) the Black [Count of Brittany, Earl of Richmond], and Henri [Count of Brittany and Tréguier], and four daughters, Maud, Agnorie, Olive, and Tiphaine (wife of Rabel de Tancarville, Chamberlain of Normandy). He succeeded his eldest brother, Geoffroi Boterel [I], or Geoffroi's son, Conan, in the Breton lands, and his brother Alain the Black in the honour of Richmond in England, thus uniting all the possessions of the family. In 1101 he served as surety for King Henry I for the observance of an affiance with Robert, Count of Flanders. The same year he witnessed charters of the king for Herbert, Bishop of Norwich, and St. Peter's, Bath. In 1107 he executed a charter at Lamballe for the Abbey of Sts. Sergius and Bacchus at Angers. In 1123 he granted a charter at Guincamp for the Abbey of St. Melaine at Rennes. He was a benefactor of the Abbey of St. Mary, York, and, in the period, 1125-35, he confirmed to that house gifts of churches. STEPHEN OF BRITTANY died 21 April, probably in 1135 or 1136, and was buried in the quire of St. Mary's, York.
