“ROBERT POYNINGS (or PONYNGES), Knt., 4th Lord Poynings, Privy Councillor, son and heir, born at Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset 3 Dec. 1382. He married (1st) before 22 October 1397 ELEANOR GREY, daughter of Reynold Grey, Knt., Lord of Hastings, Wexford, and Ruthin, by his 1st wife, Margaret, daughter of Thomas de Roos, Knt., 4th Lord Roos of Helmsley [see GREY 11 for her ancestry]. They had three sons, Richard, Knt., Robert, Esq., and Edward (died 1484) [Master of Trinity College, Arundel, Sussex, Rector of North Cray, Kent]. He was summoned to Parliament, presumably from 25 August 1404 (certainly from 21 Dec. 1405) to 13 Jan. 1444/5. His wife, Eleanor, was granted a dispensation in 1416 to have mass celebrated in her own chamber. He presented to the churches of Eastwell, Kent, 1416, 1418, 1421, 1427, and 1429, Slaugham, Sussex, 1416, Hockwold, Norfolk, 1421, and Charlton Mackrell, Somerset, 1422 and 1442. He married (2nd) in or before June 1434 MARGARET SQUERY, widow of William Cromer (or Crowmer), Lord Mayor of London (died Jan. 1433/4), and daughter of Thomas Squery, of Westerham, Kent. They had one daughter, Eleanor (wife of Thomas Palmer). SIR ROBERT POYNINGS, 4th Lord Poynings, died testate 2 October 1446. His widow, Margaret, died 3 Nov. 1448.

“REYNOLD GREY, Knt., 3rd Lord Grey of Ruthin, of Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales, Wrest (in Silsoe), Bedfordshire, Over Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, Water Eaton and Hemingford Grey, Huntingdonshire, and, in right of his 2nd wife, of Astky, Bedworth, and Bentley, Warwickshire, Broughton, Leicestershire, etc., Governor in Ireland, Privy Councillor to King Henry IV, son and heir, born about 1362 (aged 26 in 1388; 28 in 1390; 30 and more in 1396). He married (1st) shortly after 25 Nov. 1378 MARGARET ROOS (or ROS), daughter of Thomas de Roos, Knt., 4th Lord Roos of Helmsley, by Beatrice, daughter of Ralph de Stafford, K.G., 1st Earl of Stafford [see ROOS 10 for her ancestry]. They had two sons, Thomas (living 1387) and John, KG., and several daughters, including Eleanor and Margaret. He presented to the church of Swepstone, Leicestershire in 1383. He was heir general in 1389 to his cousin, John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, by which he inherited numerous estates, including the manors of Benham Valence, Berkshire, Valence (in Great Shelford), Cambridgeshire, Brampton, Huntingdonshire, East Sutton, Hartley, Luddesdon, and Sutton Valence, Kent, Hastings (in Tottenham), Middlesex, Wootton and Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire, Aston (in Munslow), Shropshire, Little Marston (in West Camel), Somerset, Chelmscote (in Brailes), Fillongley, Fulbrook, and Pillerton (in Pillerton Priors), Warwickshire, Littleton Pannell (in West or Bishop's Lavington), Wiltshire, etc. He subsequently assumed the style "Lord of Hastings, Wexford and Ruthin." He was summoned to Parliament from 6 Dec. 1389 to 26 Sept. 1439, by writs directed Reginaldo de Grey de Ruthyn chivaler. He attended the king in Ireland in 1394 and 1399. He gave his assent in Parliament 23 October 1399 to the secret imprisonment of King Richard II. He carried the Great Spurs and the Second Sword and performed the office of Napperer at the Coronation of King Henry IV in 1399. He presented to the churches of Great Brickhill, Buckinghamshire, 1399, and Wootton, Northamptonshire, 1405, 1410, 1431. In 1401 he had a suit in the Court of Chivalry with his cousin, Edward Hastings, Knt., for the undifferenced arms of Hastings; the case was decided in his favor 20 years later. He was appointed one of the king's lieutenants in North Wales 15 Jan. 1401/2. Early in 1402, he was taken prisoner by Owain Glyn Dwr, remaining a captive throughout the whole year. He had to pay a ransom of 10,000 marks, and give his eldest son and others as hostages. According to Welsh writers, he was forced to marry Joan, daughter of Owain Glyn Dwr. At the coronation of King Henry V in 1413, Reynold claimed to carry the Great Gilt Spurs and the Second Sword before the king. He married (2nd) before 7 Feb. 1414/5 JOAN ASTLEY (or ASTELEY), widow of Thomas Raleigh, of Farnborough, Warwickshire (died 30 Sept. 1404), and daughter and heiress of William Astley, Knt., 4th Lord Astley, of Astley, Bedworth, Bentley, and Weddington, Warwickshire, by his wife, Joan (or Katherine), daughter of John Willoughby, 3rd Lord Willoughby of Eresby [see ASTLEY 11.1 for her ancestry]. They had three sons, Edward, Knt. [Lord Ferrers of Groby], Robert, Esq., and John, Esq., and three daughters, Constance (wife of John Cressy, Knt.), Elizabeth, and Eleanor. He was a member of the Trinity Guild of Coventry, Warwickshire. He was about to go abroad in 1417. He went to France with the king in 1425. In 1427 William Ferrers, Lord Ferrers of Groby, owed him a debt of 1,000. He presented to the churches of Wilby, Northamptonshire, 428, Crick, Northamptonshire, 1435, Bedworth, Warwickshire, 1438, and Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire, 1439. Tensions between him and John Cornwall, Knt., Lord Fanhope in Bedfordshire culminated in a riot in 1439, when Cornwall and his men gatecrashed the sessions of peace in Bedford town hall and eighteen people were killed. SIR REYNOLD GREY, Lord of Hastings, Wexford, and Ruthin, died 18 October 1440. His widow, Joan, presented to the church of Bedworth, Warwickshire in 1445. She died 3 Sept. (or 12 Nov.) 1448.

He was heir in 1423 to his cousin, Elizabeth de la Plaunche, widow successively of John de Bermingham, Knt., Robert de Grey, Knt., 4th Lord Grey of Rotherfield (died 12 or 14 Jan. 1387/8), John de Clinton, Knt., 3rd Lord Clinton (died 6 Sept. 1398), and John Russell, Knt. (died 1405). In the period, 1432-44, Thomas Moston sued him in Chancery regarding driving Moston's servants from his manor of Hunscote, Warwickshire. In 1446 William Mauduit quitclaimed to him the manor of Howton and lands, tenements etc. in Bodenharn, Herefordshire, formerly belonging to John Bitterley, Esq. He was on a commission to raise a war loan in Warwickshire in 1449. He was appointed to a commission to levy the residue of a subsidy raised in Warwickshire in 1451. In 1458, under the terms of a fine dated 1429, he obtained the manor of Planches (in Haversham), Buckinghamshire. He married (2nd) AGNES ___. WILLIAM LUCY, Esq., died in 1466. In the period, 1467-72, his widow, Agnes, sued her step-son, William Lucy, in Chancery regarding her dower in lands in Warwickshire, etc. In October 1472 the younger William Lucy granted her the manor of Wick Rissington, Gloucestershire, and an annual rent of 26s. 8d. from lands and tenements in Claybrooke, Leicestershire, to be paid during the lifetime of the said Agnes in lieu of all dower due to her. WILLIAM LUCY, KB., of Charlecote, Cherington, Shrewley (in Hatton), etc., Warwickshire, Carlton, Ravensden, and Wilden, Bedfordshire, Planches (in Haversham), Buckinghamshire, Wick Rissington, Gloucestershire, Claybrooke, Leicestershire, Bishampton, Worcestershire, etc., and, in right of his 1st wife, of Studham, Bedfordshire, Dagnall (in Edlesborough) and Great Loughton, Buckinghamshire, and Studham, Hertfordshire, Knight of the Shire for Bedfordshire, 1467-8,1472-5, Sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, 1468-9, Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, 1474-5,1488-90, Justice of the Peace for Warwickshire, 1471-4, 1490-2, son and heir, born about 1436 (aged 30 in 1466). He married (1st) MARGARET BRECKNOCK, daughter and co-heiress of John Brecknock, Esq., of Studham, Bedfordshire, Dagnall Edlesborough) Great Loughton, Studham, and Wyrardisbury (or Wraysbury), Buckinghamshire, and Studham, Hertfordshire, Treasurer to King Henry VI, by his 1st wife, Lettice. She was born in 1436. They had three sons, Edmund, Knt., Henry, and Humphrey, and one daughter, Rose (wife of John Pulteney [died 1492] and John Bracebridge). His wife, Margaret, died c.1478, and was buried in the Lady Chapel of the monastery of Thelsford. He married (2nd) ALICE HANBURY, daughter of William Hanbury. They had two sons, William and Edward, and one daughter, Mary (wife of John Densell, Esq.). He was created a knight of the Bath at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth Plantagenet, wife of King Henry VII, in 1487. SIR WILLIAM LUCY died 8 July 1492. He left a will dated 3 July 1492, proved 15 Nov. 1492 (P.C.C. 15 Doggett), requesting burial in the chancel of the parish church of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. In 1492 his widow, Alice, was awarded an annuity of 40 marks yearly secured on the lordships of Cherington, Warwickshire and Claybrooke, Leicestershire, 20 marks to her own use and 20 marks to the use of her children then living by the said Sir William.
