      1. “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013):
“JOHN DE GREY, Knt., 2nd Lord Grey of Rotherfield, of Rotherfield, Cogges, and Somerton, Oxfordshire, Shabbington and East Claydon, Buckinghamshire, Duston, Northamptonshire, Olton (in Solihull), Warwickshire, Killerby, Yorkshire, etc., son and heir by his father's 1st marriage, born about 1319-29 (aged 30 or 40 in 1359). He married MAUD ___.* They had six sons, John [1st of name], Brian [Brother of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Preceptor of Beverley, Turcopolier], John [2nd of name], Bartholomew [3rd Lord Grey of Rotherfield], Robert, Knt. [4th Lord Grey of Rotherfield], and Richard, Knt., and two daughters, Juliane and Maud. He had letters of protection going beyond seas with his cousin, William de Clinton, Earl of Huntingdon, in 1344. He was in the Crecy campaign in 1346 in the first division with Edward, Prince of Wales. In 1360 he owed a debt of 1,000 marks to the Prior of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem in England. He was summoned to Parliament from 20 Nov. 1360 to 4 October 1373, by writs directed Johanni de Grg or Johanni de Grg de RothTeeld. In 1361 he had license to grant the advowson of the church of Oxborough, Norfolk to the Prior and brethren of St. John of Jerusalem in England; he also had license to settle the manor of Duston, Northamptonshire on himself for life, with successive remainders to his elder son, John, his next son, John, and another son, Bartholomew, and their respective heirs male. In 1362 he had license to grant the advowson of half the church of Darfield, Yorkshire to the Prior of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. He presented to a mediety of the churchof Ketdewell, Yorkshire, 1362, and to the church of Arley, Warwickshire, 1365, 1371. In 1366 Bartholomew de Burghersh, KG., 4th Lord Burghersh, petitioned the Pope on behalf of him and his wife for an indult for plenary remission. In 1368, as Sir John Grey, he presented to the church of Syderstone, Norfolk, it being his turn to present. In 1372 he had license to grant a messuage and land in East Claydon, Buckinghamshire to the Prior and convent of Bisham. SIR JOHN DE GREY, 2nd Lord Grey of Rotherfield, died 4 June 1375. He left a will dated 1375, proved 16 June 1375 (Linc. Epis. Reg., 116 Bokingham), requesting burial in the monastery of St. James near Northampton. In 1384 his widow, Maud, was pardoned for failing to appear when sued by Robert Ashcombe for a debt of £40. In 1386, her sons, Robert Grey, Lord Grey of Rotherfield, and Richard Grey, and Ralph Hastings entered a recognizance of £1000 for themselves, their men and servants not to hurt or harm Robert Ashcombe. Maud, Lady Grey of Rotherfield, died 23 Jan. 1386/7.
(* Footnote: C.P. 6 (1926): 147 & footnote k (sub Grey) states that Maud, wife of Sir John de Grey above, was "possibly" the daughter of Bartholomew de Burghersh, Knt., 3rd Lord Burghersh [see BURGHERSH 12]. While it is true that the younger Bartholomew de Burghersh, K.G., 4th Lord Burghersh petitioned the Pope on behalf of John and Maud in 1366 [see Papal Regs.: Petitions 1 (1896): 5311, there is nothing in that record which suggests that Maud de Grey was the sister of Bartholomew de Burghersh, 4th Lord Burghersh. Even so, Maud de Grey may well have been a member of the Burghersh family. New research indicates that the arms of Grey of Rotherfield (i.e., Barry of six Argent and Azure a bendlet Gules) are impaled with those of Burghersh on a shield found in the church of Ewelme, Oxfordshire at the tomb of Alice Chaucer, Duchess of Suffolk (died 1475) (see Harvey et al. Vis. of Oxford 1566, 1574, 1634 & 1574 (H.S.P. 5) (1871): 38-40; Lyle Original Identity of the York & Towneley Cycles (1919): 116-118; Krauss et al. Three Chaucer Studies (1932): 47; Oxoniensa 5 (1940): 78-93). This impalement suggests that there was a marriage sometime before 1475 between a male member of the Grey family of Rotherfield and a Burghersh female, but whether it commemorates the marriage of John and Maud de Grey is unknown. Duchess Alice Chaucer was blood related to the Burghersh family through her mother, Maud, who was the daughter and co-heiress of John Burghersh, Knt. (died 1391), of Ewelme, Oxfordshire. Another shield at the tomb of Duchess Alice displays the arms of Mohun impaling Burghersh, which surely commemorates the marriage of Duchess Alice's cousin, Joan, de Burghersh, and her husband, John de Mohun, KG., 2nd Lord Mohun. Joan de Burghersh is a known daughter of Bartholomew de Burghersh, Knt., 3rd Lord Burghersh [see MOHUN 13]. This matter needs further study.)
