“WALTER FITZ ROBERT, Knt., of Little Dunmow, Burnham, Henham, and Woodham
Walter, Essex, Hempnall, Norfolk, Daventry, Northamptonshire, Poslingworth, Suffolk, seigneur of Meri in Normandy, etc., son and heir, born before 1134. He married (1st) MAUD DE LUCY, daughter of Richard de Lucy, Knt., of Chipping Ongar, Essex, Diss, Norfolk, etc., Chief Justiciar of England,* by Rohese, daughter of William of Boulogne [see LUCY 5 for her ancestry]. Her maritagium included the manors of Chigwell, Essex and Diss, Norfolk. They had three sons, Richard, Robert, and Walter [Precentor of St. Paul's, Vicar of Burnham, Essex], and two daughters, Maud and Alice. He gave the advowsons of Woodham Walter (c. 1167) and Burnham (c. 1170), both in Essex, to the Hospitallers. In 1155 he gave the church of Burnham on Crouch, Essex to Dunmow Priory. In the period, 1167-1170, he gave the advowsons of Burnham and Woodham Walter, Essex to the Hospitallers. Sometime about 1170 he granted his warhorse and arms to the Hospitaliers on his decease. His first wife, Maud, was presumably living about 1170. About 1175 he gave three mills and various tracts of land in Daventry and Drayton, Northamptonshire to St. Mary of La Charite and the monks of St. Augustine in Daventry. He also gave the oblations of his household to the monks of Daventry to maintain the lights in the priory church. He married (2nd) before c.1181 MAUD DE BOHUN, widow of Henry d'Oilly (died c. 1163), of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, Bradenham, Buckinghamshire, heir and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, of Trowbridge, Newton Tony, Wilsford, etc., Wiltshire, Steward to Kings Henry I, Stephen, and Henry II of England, by Margaret (or Margery), daughter Miles of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, Constable of Gloucester [see BOHUN 3 for her ancestry]. They had one son, Simon. Sometime prior to 1180 he gave the advowsons of Wimbish, Essex and St. Andrew (Holborn), London to St. Neots Priory, Cambridgeshire. About 1181 he made notification of his sale to Gilbert Foliot, Bishop of London, of Walter Cheriesson, natiuus, with all his children and descendants. Sometime in the period, c.1181-98, he gave the monks of Stoke by Clare, Suffolk a dwelling-house and seven acres in Merdesford in free alms in his own cultura for the soul of Maud de Lucy his wife. Sometime in the period, c.1181-98, he granted the church of Keddington, Lincolnshire to Daventry Priory. Sometime prior to 1193, he gave the church of Heveningham, Suffolk to the monks of Bec dwelling at St. Neots. SIR WALTER FITZ ROBERT died 1198, and was buried in the choir at Dunmow Priory, Essex. His widow, Maud, was living in Easter Term 1201.

For evidence that Rohese, wife of Sir Richard de Lucy, was the sister of Pharamus (or Faramus) of Boulogne, see Cheney and John English Episc.
