ANTHONY COSSART (COZART) was born November 14, 1673 in Manhatten Island, NY, and died 1756 in Somerville, Somerset, NJ. He married (1) ELIZABETH TYMENSON VALENTINE August 02, 1696 in Schenectady, NY, daughter of JAN VALENTINE and CATHERINE TAMAMIZER. She was born February 1673/74 in Schenectady, NY, and died 1720 in Somerset, NJ.
He married (2) JUDITH HENDRICKS ALWARD Bet. 1720 - 1723, daughter of JABEZ HENDRICKS and HANNAH MORE. She was born 1697, and died Bet. 1727 - 1792.

"The four sons of Anthony Cossart became the fathers of numerous families, the descendants of which are widely scattered throughout the United States and some foreign lands. By referring to old documents, church lists, etc., now on file in NY,NJ & PA, it will be found that about this time the family began changing the spelling of the name from the French & German to English and it may be found spelled in different ways, viz.,Cosad,Cosed,Casad and cosart. The descendants of the three eldest sons of Anthony's son Jacob, i.e.,Jacob,Samuel and Job, finally adopted COZAD as their name, while the descendants of his son Anthony, retained the "s" instead of a "z" in the name. Those remaining in the east, spelled it COSAD and those in the west later changed it to CASAD. (note: there are other spellings of the name. Anthony's descendants also used COZART and CAZORT)

He was listed on the 1701 Census of Brooklyn, NY. Listed as ANTHONY COSSAR with wife, 2 children and apprentice and 10 slaves.
March 20, 1703: Sold house and lot in Cripple Bush,Brooklyn. Migrated to the Raritan area of New Jersey by 1712 with many other settlers who left Brooklyn.(Brooklyn Deeds, Lib. 2, pg. 190)
The Cripplebush home was located at about the modern intersection of Nostrand and Flushing Ave. (This info from Bill DeCoursey website: "Ancestors of William Lawrence Ferrel".)
NEW JERSEY MAGAZINE OF HISTORY;NEW JERSEY GENEALOGY MAGAZINE v.22, p.13: "The mark of Antoni Cussaw for his cattel horses and hoss Is a halfe peny on the under side of the right eare and a nick on the upper side of the same eare opaset against the halfe peny. Entered this 17 day of March 1706/7" at Piscataway. Somerset Co.,New Jersey.
1715, ANTHONY COSAR was in the New Jersey Militia of Piscataway. Col. Thomas Farmer's Regmt., 4th Co., Capt. Thomas Wetherle. (Monette's "Early Settlers of Piscataway and Woodbridge", p.114.)
A Brooklyn census shows that his family at that time consisted of a wife, two children, an apprentice, and ten slaves, evincing the fact that the second generation of Cossarts in America were slave owners. Their farm was in the vicinity of the present site of Brooklyn Navy Yard. In 1703, they sold their house and lot in Brooklyn, and in 1712 were living at Raritan, N.J., where another son Anthony was born and was baptised into the Reformed Dutch Church, August 6, 1712.
