    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. The following is an excerpt from the research report dated 17 Oct 2016 prepared for John Hedman by Legacy Family History, Inc. <https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/30216950?p=19643516&returnLabel=Alice%20Whitbread%20(LBST-H96)&returnUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familysearch.org%2Ftree%2Fperson%2Fmemories%2FLBST-H96> accessed 27 Feb 2019. The following will shows Eleanor, wife of John Spencer to be Eleanor Whitbred since it refers to her sons William, Henry, John and Gerard Spencer and one known daughter -- Elizabeth Spencer who was wife of Mr Tomlins.
"It had been speculated in The American Genealogist that the surname of Eleanor, wife of John Whitbread, may have been Radcliff, due to a land record dated 1611, which is abstracted in that source. However, recent research produced the will of Thomas Hill, gentleman of Flitton, Bedfordshire, England, which proves that Eleanor Whitbread was his sister. The will is dated 15 October 1628. Following is an extract of it:[7]
"Item I give to my sister Whitbread xls to my nephew Willm her sonne xli out of the debt he oweth and to his brother Henry xli out of the debt he oweth mee and to his brother John xli out of the debt he oweth mee Item I give to my neece Spencer xls& all those implemts of household w[hi]ch I bought of her, and to her sonne Garrett xxs and to her daughter xls And to my neece Poulter xls And to my godson Willm Whitbread xls and to my goddaughter Chapman xls Item I give to my neece Sara Millward all my plate that is to saie vj silver spoones a silver poringes a faire standing salt with a Dover silver tankerd and a goblet of silver condiconally that she payes to my neice Hanscombes children iiijli and to my neece Raworthes v daughters xxs a peice when they come to the age of xviij yeares"
Thomas Hill, brother of Eleanor Hill Whitbread, was a receiver general to three Earls of Kent. On the floor of the Flitton Church in Bedfordshire, near the altar, is a figure in brass of an honest steward. He appears dressed in a long cloak descending to the knees, trunk breeches, great ruff, and cap edged with a coronet. He has a mustache and beard. He is represented standing on a hassock. The inscription reads:
Here lyeth Interred the body of Thomas Hill gent. Receiver general to three worthy Earles of Kent, viz. Reginald, Henry and Charles: he departed this life April ye second 1628, being aged a hundred and one year. Aske how he lived, and you shall know his ende: He dyde a saint to God, to poor a friend. These lines men
know doe truly of him story, Whome God hath cal’d and seated now in glory.[8]
Other known and possible siblings of Thomas and Eleanor include the following:[9]
      1. John Hill - known sibling. He married Elizabeth (surname unknown), who was buried in 1614 in Flitton. She left a will dated 5 September 1614 and proved 27 September 1614. It is speculated that she may have married a Lomley/Lumley first. He was buried on 3 October 1607 in Flitton, Bedfordshire, England.
      2. Edward Hill - known sibling. He wrote his will on 27 June 1584 while a resident of Silsoe. It was proved on
22 October 1584. In his will, he named his wife Judith; his four children; his brothers Thomas Hill, Michael Hill, and John Hill; and others.
      3. Michael Hill - known sibling. He was named in the will of his brother, Edward Hill.
      4. Lawrence Hill - possible sibling. He is assigned to the ancestral family on the “Hill Family of Bedfordshire” web page.[10]
      5. William Hill - possible sibling. He is assigned to the ancestral family on the “Hill Family of Bedfordshire” web page.[11]
      6. Margaret Hill - possible sibling. Family Tree assigns her to this family and shows that she was christened on 4 March 1559 in Sutton, Bedfordshire, England. Her placement in the family is not confirmed.
