JOYCE ACKLEY OBITUARY
JOYCE ACKLEY October 2, 1925 - February 21, 2022
Joyce Ackley (96), award-winning poet, author, teacher, and artist, moved out of heaven’s waiting room and is on to her next adventure. She passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2022, while holding her beloved granddaughter’s hand and listening to the big band music that she loved to dance to when she was young.
Joyce was the firstborn child of Harry and Helen Koepke on Oct. 2, 1925, in Ogden, UT. She had wonderful memories of growing up in Ogden with her younger sister LaRae. She married Richard W. Ackley in 1948 (a navy man), and had a fairytale marriage for 31 years until his early death in 1979.
They were stationed at multiple military bases across the United States during his service. After they left the military, they both attended Western Washington University in their early 30s. She said it was the best time of their lives. They loved the education and being surrounded by a younger generation. Because of their love of learning, they both became educators. Joyce taught English at Ridgefield Highschool in Ridgefield, WA, in the 1960s. Her high school students admired her so much, they continued to include her in their get-togethers well into her late 90s. Joyce was a devoted member at the Beautiful Savior Luthern Church and was instrumental in implementing local educational programs.
After her husband’s death, she immersed herself in art, writing, and teaching kindergarten. She published her first book - Get Out of Heaven’s Waiting Room at the age of 82, and a second book, House of Memories and Other Poems at age 84. Joyce had a wonderful sense of humor and kept us all laughing. She always had a snappy comeback or funny saying. Even when her body failed her, her mind stayed sharp right to the end.
Joyce is predeceased by her parents and husband, Richard. She is survived by her sister, LaRae McCarrel; her son, Craig Boren; grandaughters, Shelly Montrone (Bruce) and Lori Boren; as well as grandson, Todd Boren. She is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and her nephew.
Joyce chose to be cremated, and wanted everyone to know that she’s finally a SMOKING HOT MAMA!
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 8th at 11 a.m. at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. 12513 SE Mill Plain Blvd. Vancouver, WA. 98684
