      5. "Nicholas Knapp Genealogy," compiled by Alfred Averill Knapp, M.D. "This Genealogy of the Descendants of Nicholas Knapp, first found mentioned at Watertown, Massachusetts in 1630, is the result of the work and research of many individuals. "Caleb, b. June 1677. d. 1750. m. 4-1-1697, Sarah Rundell."
Concerning the father: "Joshua Knapp moved to Stamford, Conn., with his father in 1646, m. there and lived there for some time. In 1663 he moved to Greenwich, Conn. where he was admitted Freeman in 1669, making his home there until his death in 1684. He was one of two persons who made the bargain with the Indians when Bedford Parish was bought from them. The agreement between the Indians and Stamford Colony was witnessed by Joshua Knapp and David Waterbury and signed by seven Indian Chiefs dated 12-23-1680. He bought land in Rye in 1681. His inventory is dated 10-27-1684 and is spoken of as a good estate. He mentions the children named above, except Jonathan, saying that the sons shall receive their share at the age of 21 and the daus. at the age of 18. The will is signed by the widow Knapp, John Bowers and Moses Knapp, all of Stamford, Conn., and also by John Reynolds. Joshua was made Proprietor at Greenwich 2-5-1664. He gave a deed in Stamford 1-14-1657. He was probably a weaver by trade as his father willed him "the other half of the gears" to his loom. Inventory of his estate in 1684 places its value at 54 pounds. He was one of the Committee of Sixteen to confer about the dividing line between Greenwich and Rye. John Bowers was made Proprietor at Greenwich 2-5-1664, was called 43 years old in 1681 and d. in 1694. No children."

      A. "Caleb Knapp, son of Joshua, and our third generation ancestor, was quite a prominent man. He was the Representative for Greenwich in the Connecticut General Assembly, 12 May 1715; appraiser of several estates between 1725 and 1741, including that of Benjamin Rundle and Samuel Peck. He was on the Town Tax List in 1694/5 for 39 pounds and again in 1697, for 39 pounds 10 shillings. He was called an Ensign in August of 1710, and Captain in 1719 at Greenwich. The Town Tax List for Greenwich, Connecticut listed Benjamin Knapp- 31 pounds; CALEB- 39 pounds 10 shillings; Joseph Knapp- 73 pounds; Joshua- 54 pounds and Timothy Knapp- 47 pounds 5 shillings, giving indication of having fair estates for that period of history. He was granted a parcel of land 23 Aug 1700 and deeded land to sons, Charles and Nathaniel on 25 Nov 1728; to son, Caleb, 26 Jun 1731; to son Timothy, 12 Dec 1749. All of his children were born in Greenwich, Connecticut. His will made 21 Jun 1750, mentions wife, Sarah (Rundle) Knapp, children: Timothy-Caleb-Charles-Nehemiah-Abigail- sons, Nathaniel and Nehemiah, executors. The inventory of his estate was made 26 Nov 1750 and his will was probated 4 Dec 1750. Our Caleb, signed a petition for an Episcopal Church at Stamford/Greenwich, Connecticut. He and brother, Joshua, were appointed to a committee to see that a Mr Morgan, 2d Society Minister, either got someone to run his mill and tend to his business of minister or be replaced by the last of September 1708 if he did not. Rev Morgan spent more time running his mill than he did looking after the spiritual needs of the people. They dismissed Rev Morgan as the settled minister and replaced him with another minister. Caleb, was 7 years, 4 months old at the death of his father. Greenwich Records say: "Caleb Knap, maryed unto Sarah Rundle Anno 1697, April ye 1 day." Our Caleb was a steadfast pillar of this early period of our history."
      B. The same author in a pedigree chart included with the book shows a birth date of 10 Jun 1677 in Greenwich.

pg. 13: Caleb Knapp was granted a parcel of land in Greenwich Aug. 23, 1700. Nov. 25, 1728 he deeded land to his sons, Charles & Nathaniel. June 26, 1731 he deeded land to his son, Caleb. Dec. 12, 1749 he deeded land to his son, Timothy. Caleb was a brother to Joshua Knapp Jr. who was the father of John and Jacob Bundle's wives. It is possible Joshua Jr's dau Sarah married their brother, William Rundle. That possibility needs more research. There is controversial information regarding which Sarah Knapp was wife of William Rundle who was father of Amy Rundle who m. Caleb Knapp 4.

"The militia generally has been considered in Chapter IX. As regards the military forces in Greenwich, a company was organized soon after the town was first settled, and Captain Daniel Patrick was the first military commander. After his death in 1644, he was succeeded by William Hallett, who was banished in 1648, for the commission of the act of adultery with Mrs. Elizabeth Peaks. The next leading citizen was Richard Crab, who seems, to have removed from Greenwich about 166o. The following were his successors:
1669 to 1688, Sergeant Jonathan Lockwood.*
1689 to 1695, Lieutenant John Bowers.*
1696 to 1725, Lieutenant James Ferris.
