B. Children of marriage with Ellen De Graw:
a. Sarah Ellen Mathis, b. 11 Jun 1871 at Spring Valley, Nye, Nevada. Marriage sealing to John Peter Pearson, 2 Dec 1886 SGEOR. D. 18 Dec 1943 in Brigham, Salt Lake, Utah and bur. 22 Dec 1943 in Utahn, Duschene, UT. Had 12 children born from 1893 thru 1912 in Huntington and Castle Dale in Emery Co., UT. 8 Sep 2003 email from Ruby Packer , author of a book on the Degraw family, indicates Sarah had 15 children.
b. John Thomas Mathis, b. 21 Feb 1876 at Santaquin, Utah, Utah; d. 21 Mar 1891.
c. Sophia Mathis, b. 5 Jun 1878 at Hillsdale, Iron, Utah. 28 Oct 1914 in Junction, Piute, UT and bur. Howes Cemetery, Marysvale, Piute, UT. Marr. William Howes 24 Apr 1895 in Manti, Sanpete, UT. Had 6 children born 1896 thre 1909 in Marysvale, Piute, UT. 8 Sep 2003 email from Ruby Packer , author of a book on the Degraw family, indicates Sophia Mathis married William Howes and they had nine children.
2. Censuses:
1851 Iowa State: Pottawattamie County. FHL film 1022203. The entire state was counted but only Pottawattamie listed everyone by name in the household and their ages; other counties only listed the head of the household and a numerical count without names of the various ages by sex in the household. No date is given when the census was taken but it was certified in Dec. 1851; however, the other counties show a Sep 1851 date which also appears more likely for Pottawattamie as well in light of ages given some children with known birthdays in October. Census return:
Mathis: John 26, Sarah A. 26, John T. 2, Sarah E. 1. [John T. later marries Ellen Degraw whose family is also in this same census.]
1852 Iowa: father not listed in FHL book heads of household index for the 1852 Iowa census.

1. On file is photo of John Mathis, his mother Sarah Dowdle and perhaps his neice Celeila Mathis. Also on file are three additional photos of his two daughters with Sophia Degraw including their husbands and families. Photos received 4 Oct 2003 from Ruby Packer .

1. Per 12 May 2002 Ancestry.com database ":1690894." Notes Council Bluffs, but this was a name later given to the area of Kanesville and other nearby communities.

2. Per 12 May 2002 Ancestry.com database ":1690894": Second wife was Theodosia Ellis, b. 1872, m. 22 Feb 1893 in Downey, Los Angeles, CA. She died 1954. Email of 4 Oct 2003 from Ruby Packer indicates John's only other wife besides Degraw was Theodosia Ellis born 16 Mar 1872 in Santa Ana, Los Angeles, California. They were married 22 Feb 1893 at Downey, Los Angeles, California. She died 23 Feb 1954 in Torrence, San Bernardino [L.A.?], California. She was buried 28 February 1954 in Ontario, San Bernardino, California.
DEATH:
1. This is from the death certificate of John Thomas Mathis in the San Bernardino County Hall of Records. He died May 14, 1927 in Cucamonga on Archibald Avenue near Church Street. He was 78 yrs, 0 mths, 16 dys at the age of death and was born April 28, 1849 in Iowa to John Mathis (Tennessee) and Sarah Deudell (Mississippi). He was a white male, married to Theodora Ellis, and had been a farmer, but was retired. He two years at the current residence, but 50 years in California. His physician was A. L. Weber, M.D., of Upland and he was his doctor from January 1, 1927 to May 14, 1927 with the last time seeing the patient on May 9, 1927. Cause of death was chronic myocarditis(5 yrs) and burial was in Bellevue Cemetery in Ontario on May 18, 1927. Ellis Mathis of Cucamonga was the informant on the death certificate.

I have received copies of her 5 photos showing David Frederick, Jr., Sophia E. DeGraw, Sophia's first husband John T. Mathis, and children of John Mathis and Sophia who were later adopted by David Frederick, Jr.
