Notes - RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. Chesterwood, where the farmhold of John Mewis and residence of his son Michael was located, is easily found just north up the hill a very short distance from Haydon Bridge.
MARRIAGE:
1. First marriage: Haydon Bridge parish transcript FHL film 94994: "12 Feb 1660/1661, John Mewerse and Issabell Parker."
2. Second marriage: Judging from the birthdate of 1687 for Thomas, the first child of this marriage, the marriage would have had to occur by about 1686 or earlier. The death of his first wife was May 1683, which gives us a window of about 1684 to 1686 for the second marriage. Unfortunately, the marriage records for Haydon Bridge are incomplete in this time period and a search of existing records after 1686 did not turn up the marriage. From the burial records, we can establish that both wives had the same name of Isabel.
DEATH:
1. Transcription of original will found on FHL film 90891 for the Consistory Court of Durham. All of Northumberland was included in that jurisdiction except for Hexham and Hexhamshire.
This will, recently found, upsets the prior supposed family order where it was believed a second John existed who was the son of John and Isabell Parker. This was due to the documented burials of two Isabells married to John Mewis in the parish of Haydon Bridge. Only one burial record was found for John in the church records and it was assumed the other John was not recorded or died elsewhere. This will now confirms that both Johns are in fact the same and that he had a younger and older family. He does not name the children of his first marriage. Also it appears his second wife was already dead at the time of the will since he does not name a wife. Also we can tie Michael to John since Michael's church records also refer to Chesterwood. Apparently of the second family, all the children had previously died except for Richard, Margaret, and Elizabeth. Richard's progeny continues in Haydon Parish for several generations.
The will:
"In the Name of God amen. The 24th day of April 1717. I, John Mewis of Haydon Bridge in the County of Northumbeland being sick and weak in body but of good and perfect memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament. And first being penitent and sorry for my sins past do humbly __firming forgiveness for the same. I give and commit my soul unto Almighty God in whom through the mouth of Jesus Christ I believe affirmingly to have full remission of all my sins. And now for the settling of my temporal estate.
Item: I give and bequesth to my son Richard all that my messuage or farmhold in Chesterwood during the reversion or remainder of the lease thereof and also all my lands, houses and refines situate and lying on the south side of the King's High Street in Haydon Bridge to him and his heirs for ever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my two daughters Margaret and Elizabeth each of them five pounds and also all my household goods equally to be divided betwixt them.
Item: I give and bequeath to each of my children by my former wife (as a small token) the sum of one shilling.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my aforesaid son Richard one cow and three horses, whom also I do affirm(?) and appoint sole executor of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
[Signed:] John Mewis his mark.
[Witnesses]: Mihaell Stokoe, John Dobinson, John Dixson, Tho. Simpson."
