    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Trying to determine Elizabeth's birth or christening and parentage is problematic. We only have two direct contemporary sources to work from to get an approximation of Elizabeth's birth - the 1841 census which shows her age as 71 (birth ca. 1770) and her tombstone with the inscribed age of 72 with a death date of 1 Jun 1846 (birth ca. 1774). Further investigation into the death age by accessing Family Search's "Diocese of Durham Bishop's Transcripts for Heddon on the Wall in Northumberland," p. 333, shows the burial record as "Elizth Charleton / Heddon / June 3 /76 years (John A. Blackett, Vicar)." This burial age record gives a birth date of 1769/70. Censuses are notoriously unreliable for ages since the census taker would sometime estimate the age or the individual them self was not very accurate. As for the tombstone, it appears to have been placed at least 30 years after her death meaning her age may or may not be entirely accurate. The one census she shows up in, 1841, indicates she was born in the county of Northumberland. We also know from her 29 Jun 1795 marriage in St. John Lee that she had been residing long enough in the parish of St. John Lee to be considered "of the parish" and that one of the witnesses was John Ferguson - probably a father or brother. It is probably this marriage witness that has led many past researchers to "assume" John as the father. This in turn led the same past researchers to look for any John Fergusons in the area and "assume" him to be her father without actually being able to prove the connection. The first LDS patron submittal of Elizabeth in 1934 showed a birth of "About 1781" of Hexham, Northumberland. This date of course doesn't work at all with the marriage of 1795. As for the location, Hexham is the main church in the larger regional area, which adjoins and includes St. John Lee. Unfortunately, there is no such entry in Hexham. Since then, the LDS extraction program as of 31 Jul 2009 for all of Northumberland has generated the following christening possibilities for any Elizabeth christened between 1765 and 1781, which I list as follows chronologically; however, I have not found a definite proof of a confirmed link - so this is a process of elimination:
      A. Eliz. Ferguson, b. 13 Jun 1767, chr. 5 Jul 1767 at St. James Blackett formerly Silver St. Indp. or Pnewc, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland to John and Isabell Ferguson.
      B. Elizabeth Ferguson, chr. 7 Aug 1768 at Norham, Northumberland to Matthew Ferguson.
      C. Elisabeth Fargeson, chr. 27 Aug 1769 at Saint John Lee, Northumberland to Jno. Fargeson of Walfell.
      D. Elizabeth Ferguson chr. 21 Jul 1776 at Longhoughton, Northumberland to William and Elizabeth Ferguson.
      E. Elisabeth Fargison chr. 5 Oct 1777 at Saint John Lee, Northumberland to John Farguson of Acomb.
      F. Elizabeth Farguson chr. 25 Jan 1778 at Stannington, Northumberland to Andrew and Isabel Farguson.
      G. Elizabeth Ferguson, chr. 15 Apr 1781 at Belford, Northumberland to Thomas Ferguson.
Even though the extraction program may not be 100% comprehensive for Northumberland, it does cover a lot of ground including a 10 or so mile radius around St. John Lee Parish where we find Elizabeth's marriage (the exception being Newbrough/Warden, which records I reviewed on FHL film). The entry which some past researchers have focused on is the 1777 entry (after realizing the 1781 assumption didn't work) since it was in the same parish as the marriage. Unfortunately, it doesn't jive exactly with the 1771 or 1774 dates we now know of Elizabeth from the 1841 census and tombstone, both of which never seemed to have been available to the earlier researchers. Assuming that her christening was indeed recorded, which it may or may not have been, we must now try to find her by process of elimination using logic and what we now know.
Assuming an age of 16 minimum for marriage, we would need to discount any date after 1779. An age of under 21 would be very unusual and something I have never seen in the English records; the normal minimum of 21 to be considered "full age" making a birth date of 1774 or a bit earlier even better. Occasionally I have seen marriages as early as maybe 19 or 21, which would give us birth of no earlier of 1776. In any case we can eliminate entries F(1778) and G(1779) above as being unrealistic. Entry E(1777) is marginal at best when age is the only consideration.
We can also judge the entries by localities. Of the various geographic locations given above, the varying distances in miles from St. John Lee (or even nearby Hexham which is 1.4 miles from St. John Lee) are as follows: Newcastle 21.8, Norham 76.5, Longhoughton 54.4, and Stannington 28. We have determined that our Elizabeth's husband, Thomas Charlton, was born in Newbrough, which is 5.7 miles from Hexham and only 3.6 miles from St. John Lee. St. John Lee literally looks at Hexham across the river. For reference, Heddon-on-the-Wall, where Thomas and Elizabeth would eventually settle is 13.6 miles from Lee St. John. Geographically, entries "C" and "E" in St. John Lee are the most likely prospects especially considering the marriage location. A possible second choice would be "A" in Newcastle; however, it doesn't seem from my general studies of the area that those in the Hexham area mixed much with Newcastle at this time even though we cannot totally rule it out. The area around Hexham was administered as part of the Duke of York's jurisdiction and separate from the rest of Northumberland; in fact, for probate for the area, you must go to York and not Newcastle as you would for the rest of Northumberland. I find that it was really only later in the 1800s that these rural areas started to move towards the industrial areas such as Newcastle.
We can also use the children of Thomas and Elizabeth as a reference point. From the point of view of their childrens' confirmed christening locations, we have one daughter at the Catholic Church near Lee St. John, two children at the Catholic Church at Stella (west side of Newcastle), one at the Catholic Church Minsteracres at Bywell St. Peters which is halfway between Hexham and Heddon, one at Heddon, and two unknown but traditionally ascribed to the Hexham area. From all of this, St. John Lee ("C" and "E") again seems the most likely location for Elizabeth's christening with Newcastle "A" a very distant possibility. Generally marriages were performed in the bride's church making St. John Lee very probable for her birth as well.
In reviewing the marriage record, we know there was a witness named John Fargison, who would most likely be her father or a brother. Unfortunately the residence in the record only states "of this parish," which does not give us a specific location within the parish, which would have helped us to neatly tie in the various christening records.
From a time period perspective, the two entries of Lee St. John (1769 and 1777) seem to bracket the projected birth date of 1774 as reported on the tombstone. Even though there is no documentation that I have seen reported, previous submitters to the LDS IGI had seemed to believe the latter of the two - "E" or 1777 - as the most probable, which certainly could be the case; however, it may have only been the most easy and convenient choice. In short, at the time of the 1795 marriage, she would have been either 25 or 17 respectively if we accept either of the two christening entries from St. John Lee.
Focusing on the two dates of 1769 and 1777 in St. John Lee, then we should also review the birth years of Elizabeth's children. We have births of proven children up to 1809 which would mean a childbearing cut off age of 40 if born in 1769 or 32 if born in 1777. This would tend to lead us to the 1769 date; however, we have the problem of two potential but unproven children after 1810 (maybe 1812 and 1816), which would better lend itself to a birth of 1777. Being the post-1810 children are still tentative at best, we are still left unfortunately with the same dilemma until we can prove their connection or not.
Now if we factor in the burial record quoted above and not the tombstone age, we are then certainly left with the "C" option which fits nicely for 1769, which is close to the census age.
Using the now preferred 1769 date in St. John Lee, then the family for the same father and location within the parish is as follows:
-4 Mar 1764, Edward son of John Fargison of Walfell.
-27 Aug 1769, Elisabeth dau. of Jno. Ferguson of Walfell.
-21 Nov 1773, Mary dau. of John Fargeson of Wallfell. [Bur. 6 Mar 1774.]
If we were to accept the 1777 date in St. John Lee, then the family for the same father and location within the parish is as follows:
-26 Dec 1774, Mary dau. of John Farguson of Acomb.
-5 Oct 1777, Elisabeth Fargison to John Farguson of Acomb.
-18 Jul 1779, John son of John Fargison of Acomb.
The 1777 Elizabeth above does have a John for a brother, but he would only have been 15, which would have been too young to be a witness for a marriage. It should also be noted that many past researchers, who have assumed a John Ferguson for Elizabeth's father, have wrongly surmised John to have been born about 1738 of Hexham and buried 25 Jul 1801 in Hexham. I have thoroughly refuted these dates and locations by studying Hexham and the surrounding area parish records. See his notes for more information on this and for an extensive search on possible Johns and all Fergusons in a larger conclusive radius search.
Long and short, of the two Elizabeths, the 1769 Elizabeth is by far our best option and the direction I now pursue.

      2. Note that a John Ferguson witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Ferguson. LDS IGI extracted record per batch M004191, film 0095002, printout 6902831 shows Thos. Charlton md. Elizabeth Fargison 29 Jun 1795 at Lee Saint John, Northumberland, England. The actual record on FHL film 1068897 also shows that both are of the parish and that she is a spinster, that Thos. signs with an X, but Elizabeth signs as Elisabeth Fargison. The record also shows her name as Elisabeth, not Elizabeth. Witnesses signed as follows: Thos. Fenwick and John Ferguson. John Ferguson could be the father or a brother.

      3. Various Fergusons in the records of St. John Lee Parish per FHL film 1068898. Baptisms and marriages were found with IGI extraction batch search followed up by looking at the actual church records on FHL film. Our John is the father of Group 1 under baptisms.
      A. Baptisms 1664-1812 grouped by common father:
      Group 1:
-4 Mar 1764, Edward son of John Fargison of Walfell. [Probable father of group 7.]

-21 Nov 1773, Mary dau. of John Fargeson of Wallfell. [Bur. 6 Mar 1774.]
Group 2: [Father Francis of this group is probably the Francis chr. 22 Apr 1750 in Hexham to John Fargueson, collier.]

-27 Sep 1778, Mark son of Francis Farguson of Fallowfield. [We can follow Mark into Hexham where we see his children christened beginning 1808.]
-["Infant daughter" not in christening record but shown bur. 15 Apr 1780.]
-15 Jul 1781, Francis son of Francis Fargison of Fallowfield. [Probable father to group 7.]

-16 Dec 1781, Ann dau. of John Farguson of Fallowfield. [Bur. 12 Aug 1793.]
Group 5: [Group 4 and 5 should probably be combined since Ann of 1781 dies in 1793 noted as being of Anick unless there was an Ann in Anick not reported in the christenings, which is unlikely.]
-13 Dec 1789, Wm. son of John Ferguson of Anick.

      B. Marriages 1664-1812:
-14 May 1774, Francis Farguson and Elisabeth Ramsay, both of the parish of St. Oswald, wit. George Ramsay and John Farguson. Probable parents of Group 2 above.]
-29 Jun 1795, Thos. Charlton and Elizabeth Fargison, both of this parish, wit: Tho's Fenwick and John Fargison. [Our ancestors.]
-21 May 1797, John Fargison, batch., and Ann Aynsley, spinster, both of this parish, wit: Thomas Aynsley, Edwd. Ferguson. [Probable parents of Group 6 above.]

      C. Burials 1760-1812 (the records go much early and this is only a self-imposed beginning timeframe:
-6 Mar 1774, Mary dau. of John Fargeson, Wallfell. [Part of Group 1 above; chr. 1773.]
-15 Apr 1780, Infant dau. of Francis Fargison, Fallowfield. [Part of Group 2 above; no chr. record.]
      - 30 Jul 1788, George, son of Francis Fargison, Fallowfel. [Part of Group 2 above.]
-12 Aug 1793, Ann, dau. of John Farguson, Anick. Part of Group 4 above; chr. 1781,]
-25 Jul 1801, John Ferguson, Acomb. [Since we have a father for Group 3 already (John who was bur. 1830), this John, being of Acomb, is probably the son in Group 3 chr. 1779.]
-8 Apr 1805, Ann, wife of John Ferguson, Fallowfield. [Probable mother to Group 6 since birth of children in Group ceases in 1804; Ann Aynsley.]

-31 May 1811, Edward Ferguson, Acomb. [Probable father of Group 7 since birth of children stop and no relationship to a father is stated in the bur. record.]
      D. Burials 1813-1860 (ages are given beginning 1813; the burial records continue but I had a self-imposed cutoff of 1860):
-6 Apr 1822, John Ferguson, Acomb, 31. [Unsure of relationship since I do not have a corresponding christening fitting his approx. birth of 1790.]
-29 May 1822, Eliz'th Ferguson, Acomb, 76. [Probable mother of Group 3 above; no marriage record in this parish. Probably Elizabeth Hall who married John Farguson in 1773 in Bywell St. Andrew as reported in a separate note below.]
-15 Apr 1825, Francis Ferguson, Fallowfield, 75. [Probable father of Group 2 above; Francis the senior.]
-23 Apr 1830, John Ferguson, Acomb, 77. [Probable father of Group 3 above.]

-10 Mar 1850, John Ferguson, Fallowfield, 76. [Probable father of Group 6 above and husband to Ann Aynsley.]
-21 May 1851, Mark Ferguson, Brunton(?) Bank, 30. [Son of Francis Ferguson and Mary Nixon in group 8, but too late for my extraction - source: 1851 census.]
-5 Nov 1852, Francis Ferguson, Plane Trees, 69. [Probable father of Group 8; Francis Jr., son of Francis.]
-28 Dec 1854, Mary Ferguson, Plane Trees, 73. [Probable mother of Group 8, Mary Nixon.]
-12 Feb 1755, Eleanor Ferguson, Beaufront Wood Head, 87. [No known connection at this time.]
-20 Jun 1856, Jane Ferguson, Hexham, 79. [No known connection at this time; also from Hexham out of the parish.]
-15 Apr 1858, Elizabeth Ferguson, Acomb, 87. [Probable mother of Group 7 - Elizabeth Moffatt.]

      4. Survey of the Hexham Parish records using IGI extractions and then compared against the parish records in FHL films 991801-991803 and 94997. This information provides context to other Fergusons in the area helping us to eliminate false information concerning John. Many past researchers, who have assumed a John Ferguson for Elizabeth's father, have wrongly surmised John to have been born about 1738 of Hexham and buried 25 Jul 1801 in Hexham. The following refutes a baptism in Hexham. As for an 1801 burial, see above separate note for the correct John (not ours) who was buried in St. John Lee.
      A. Baptisms 1644-1753 by groups:
      Group 1:
-8 May 1729, John, son of John Fargison, testator: William Tyeson.
      Group 2:
-10 Mar 1732, Jane, dau. of Alexander Fargison.
      Group 3:
-22 Apr 1750, Francis, son of John Fargueson, collier. [Probably the father of the eight children chr. 1774-1790 in Saint John-Lee to Francis residing in Fallowfield and husband to Elizabeth Ramsay.]
-17 May 1752, John, son of John Fargueson, collier.
-20 Feb 1757, Matthew, son of John Ferguson, collier.
Group 4 [I would assume the father John in this Group is the son in Group 3 above.]:
-22 Aug 1784, Jane, dau. of John Ferguson, collier.
-12 Aug 1787, Isabel, dau. of John Ferguson, miner. [Probably the same Isabel who married Henry Turnbull in St. John Lee on 28 Nov 1807 and resided in Warden in the 1841 census.]
Group 5 [This is probably the same Mark chr. 1778 in St. John Lee as a son to Francis.]:
-22 Jun 1806, Mary Ann, dau. of Mark Ferguson, d. 18 Mar 1810.
      -10 Jan 1808, Francis, son of Mark Ferguson, d. 25 Oct 1808.
-4 Dec 1808, Elizabeth, dau. of Mark Ferguson.
      B. Marriages:
-27 Apr 1741, Robert Farguson and Elzabeth McFairlin.
-26 Jun 1749, John Fargueson and Mary Tweddle, both of the parish. [Probable parents to Group 3 above.]
-24 Jun 1793, Alexander Ferguson and Jane Spoor, both of the parish.

      5. Pre-1810 Survey of other nearby parishes using only IGI batch extraction. I did not confirm against FHL films of the various church parishes since I don't see any "stand-out" connection to our potential John in the following except for the 1773 marriage in Bywell St. Andrew:
-See extensive results listed separately above for St. John Lee and Hexham.
-No results: Haydon Bridge, Simonburn, Heddon on the Wall, Stonecroft with Hexham Roman Catholic, Haltwhistle Presbyterian, Falstone, Falstone Presbyterian, Corsenside, Chollerton, Cheeseburn Grange and Stella Roman Catholic, Capheaton Roman Catholic, Allendale, Bellingham, Blanchland, Elsdon, Kirkwhelpington, Kinharle, Thockrington, Whittonstall, Newbrough, Warden, and Slaley.
-Ovingham: 12 Nov 1808, marriage of John Farguson and Eleanor Scott. [Note that some family histories try to connect the Elizabeth Ferguson who md. Thomas Charlton as a daughter to this couple - which would be of course erroneous.]
-Haltwhistle: 15 Nov 1742, christening of Izabel, dau. of Robert Ferguson.
      -Corbridge:
-10 Apr 1673, marriage of David Fergison and Ann Hindhaugh.
-17 Jun 1675, chr. of John, son of David Fargeson.
-10 Mar 1678, chr. of Eleanor, dau. of David Fargeson.
-Birtley: 16 Feb 1784, marriage of John Ferguson and Mary Veach.
-Bolam: 25 Nov 1712, chr. William, son of William Ferguson.
-Bywell Saint Andrew: 13 Apr 1773, marriage of John Fergueson and Elizabeth Hall. [This marriage is interesting because I believe it to be the couple who lived in Acomb and had the three children christened in St. John Lee: Mary 1774, Elisabeth 1777, and John 1779. The Elisabeth of 1777 is one of our strong candidates for our Elizabeth who married Thomas Charlton.]
-Bywell Saint Peter: 17 Oct 1714, chr. of George, son of James and Elizabeth Ferguson.
      -Hartburn:
      Christenings:
      Group 1:
-14 Aug 1740, Alice, dau. of John Ferguson.
-14 Feb 1742, Isabell, dau. of John Ferguson.
-20 May 1744, Alice, dau. of John Ferguson.
-9 Nov 1746, Mary, dau. of John Ferguson.
-7 May 1749, John, son of John and Mary Ferguson. [Probably the father of Group 3 below.]
-31 May 1752, Dorothy, dau. of John and Mary Ferguson.
-31 Jul 1757, Thomas, son of John and Mary Ferguson.
      Group 2:
-2 May 1756, Isabel, dau. of William and Penelope Farguson.
Group 3: [John the father is probably the son of Group 1 above.]
-16 Dec 1770, Ann, dau. of John and Sarah Ferguson.
-8 Feb 1772, John, son of John and Sarah Ferguson.
-4 Jul 1777, Ann, dau. of John and Sarah Ferguson.
      Marriages:
-27 Apr 1740, William Fergueson and Anne Robson.
-10 Dec 1763, Eleanor Ferguson and William Nixon.
-Abt 30 Dec 1766, Isabel Ferguison and Adam Buckham. [Dau. in Group 1.]
-28 Jul 1768, Alice Ferguson and William Elliott. [Dau. in Group 1.]
-20 Aug 1770, John Farguson and Sarah Aynsley. [Parents of Group 3 and son in Group 1.]
-Hebron: 15 May 1760, marr. of Bartholomew Ferguson and Jane Lawson.
      -Stamfordham:
      Christenings:
-30 Jan 1785, chr. of John, son of Thos. and Eliz. Ferguson.

      6. "Rounce's Marriage Index: Hexham Marriages 1759-1837," Northumberland Records Office at Woodhorn, shows the following Ferguson marriages which I cannot find any linkage thus far and who I have already reported on in one of the above notes.
      a. Alexander Ferguson and Jane Spoor, 24 Jun 1793.
      b. Mark Ferguson and Elizabeth Walker, 15 Jan 1806.

      6. Findmypast.com shows the following christening results for a 20-year search either side of 1728 in Durham and Northumberland for Ferguson/Fargison and variants. Their scope is not necessarily comprehensive:
-21 Jun 1730, John, son of John Ferguson, wherryman, chr. 21 Jun 1730, Tynemouth, Christ Church, Northumberland.
-19 May 1728, John, son of Henry Ferguison, Unthank, Tweedmouth, Northumberland.

      7. Findmypast.com shows the following marriage results for a 10-year search either side of 1767 in Durham and Northumberland for Ferguson/Fargison and variants. Their scope is not necessarily comprehensive:
-24 May 1763, John Ferguison and Ann Denham, Holy Trinity, Sunderland, Durham.
-11 Jun 1767, John Fergyson and Elizabeth Tenick, Staindrop, Durham.
-13 Apr 1773, John Farguson and Elizabeth Hall at Bywell St. Andrew, Northumberland. [This marriage is most likely the couple who lived in Acomb and had the three children christened in St. John Lee: Mary 1774, Elisabeth 1777, and John 1779.]

      BURIAL:
      1. Traditionally our John Ferguson has been shown with a burial of 25 Jul 1801 in Hexham, Northumberland. In order to verify this, I reviewed the Hexham parish church burial records for 10 years either side of 1801 (per FHL films 991802 and 991803). I only found the following unrelated burials, none of which involve a John. The 1801 burial was traced to St. John Lee parish and involves John Farguson of Acomb, presumbably the same John b. in Acomb in 1779, which I report on in more detail in a separate note above:
-25 Oct 1808, Francis, son of Mark Ferguson, gentleman's servant.
-9 Dec 1809, Isabel, dau. of Mark Ferguson, gentleman's servant.
-18 Mar 1810, Mary, dau. of Mark Ferguson, Servant.
-19 Jul 1825, Isabella Ferguson, Hexham, age 64.
