      1. There is a discrepancy on the reported children of this individual's father - I currently post both sets of children until more information is found:
      A. Nina Kossman reports four children: Boruch, Elias, Itzig, and Abraham.
      B. Leo Herzenberg reports instead the following children:
      a. Isak, b. Libava, Latvia.
      b. Bernhard, b. Lodz, Poland. He had one son David.
      c. Samuel, b. Libava, Latvia. He had a son Leo Herzenberg who was born in South Africa. He in turn had a son Winston who was also born in South Africa but living 1986 to 1996 in North York, Ontario, Canada. The info on this family is per a letter from Winston to Leo dated 26 Feb 1996.
      d. Eduard.

      2. Per email dated 21 Aug 2010 from Len Yodaiken , professional genealogist:
"Jewish genealogy is complex in many ways and I was very happy to receive the tree page that Nina sent me. If you look at the right hand side of it you will see the children of Lasar and Lippe are Boruch. Elias, Itzig and Abraham. If you look at my tree, page 17, you will see that Leyser (spelt differently) had Bernard, Edward and Isaac. Had I found dates for them I am sure that they would have varied also from those of the archives. So what do we learn from this? Firstly that spelling is never consistent, next that the children where given Jewish names at birth, but as the family assimilated into the Germanic culture of Kurland they adapted their names accordingly. We do not know what happened to Abraham or perhaps you do, my guess is that he was one of the fatal cases of infantile mortality so rampant at that time and lastly, Jews never gave the correct years of birth but tried by very many means to make the child much older or younger than he actually was in order to get round or postpone the hateful military draft."
A follow-up email from Ron Lapid dated 28 Aug 2010 notes:
"- Itsig is definitely the Yiddish for Isaac.
      - Boruch (often written "Baruch") is Hebrew. You need to take into account that not all Hebrew names had an automatic translation. If Baruch also had a German name (very likely in Latvia) it would probably be one that had similar sounds like Bernard.
      - Elias is already a Germanic form of Eliahu (Elijah). But it is very Jewish and so if he wanted a less Jewish name Edward could be one of the logical choices.
So all in all I would agree that there is a very high likelihood that all these names relate to the children of Lazar/Leyser. (His Hebrew name was undoubtedly Eliezer)."
Prior to these emails, I had listed Isak separately from Itzig, Bernhard separately from Boruch, and Elias separately from Edward - but I have since combined them.

      3. The Latvian Archives is online and I have reviewed all Registers for Pilten. Registers are in German and I indicate what I don't understand. I extracted all Herzenbergs of which the following excerpts apply to this family:
