    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Archival Research Paper about Herzenberg Family prepared for Kerry Petersen 28 Feb 2011 and is report no. Nr. 3-P-272, 2816, 1927 N, by Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs (Latvian National Archives), Slokas iela 16, Riga, LV-1007. Complete transcript is in the notes of Edouard/Elias Ocipovitch Herzenberg and the following is but a partial transcript:
"The recruits' enlistment registers of the Jewish families belonging to Pilten for 1842, 1848, 1854, 1871, the revision lists of the Jewish families belonging to Pilten, set up on August 15 of 1851, the merchant's lists of Goldingen for 1868, 1874, 1875 contain the following information about Herzenberg family (we would like to draw your attention to the fact that very often the age of person was determined by their outward appearance and was stated in some documents rather approximately):
      1. Joseph Herzenberg, his sons...
1.3. Lemchen, son of Joseph Herzenberg, born in ca 1779/1780 (aged 54 in 1834), died 1840. His wife Schore (the age is not stated). Their sons...
1.3.3. Laser (Leiser), son of Lemchen Herzenberg, born in ca 1821 (aged 21 in 1842, aged 27 in 1848, aged 33 in 1854). His wife Lippe, born in ca 1822 (aged 53 in 1875). They had children."

      2. Data from a copy captured of Peter Bruce Herzenberg's website of London, England, since relocated to South Africa (website is no longer functioning as of 7 Aug 2007). See more on his research and data in the notes of the earliest Herzenberg in this database. Sources for this individual are HL for Leonardo Herzenberg and PC for Piltene Cemetery records. In regards to this individual:
Name variations: Leiser (Leizer) (Leyser), Lazar Lemchen, Lasar.
      HL101 shows d. 1907.
      PC006.

      3. Ancestry.com's "Latvia: Courland Registers and Family Lists, 1845-1874" in partnership with JewishGen lists the following from Piltene with the same father Lammchen. Apparently they all have their own homes since they do not share a family or tax number:
      A. Levin Herzenberg, age 58 in 1858, b. abt 1800, registration town Piltene, death date 1867, father Lämmchen, Recruit's Enlistment register, Fond #630, family number 54, Oklad (tax reference) # 228.
      B. Elias Herzenberg, age 67 in 1871, b. abt 1804, registration town Piltene, father Lämmchen, Recruit's Enlistment register, Fond #630, family number 11, Oklad (tax reference) # 50.
      C. Laser Herzenberg, age 50 in 1871, b. abt 1821, registration town Piltene, father Lämmchen, Recruit's Enlistment register, Fond #630, family number 9, Oklad (tax reference) # 40.
-Same family and oklad: Zippe Herzenberg, record year: 1871, registration town Piltene.

      4. Ancestry.com's "Latvia: Courland Registers and Family Lists, 1845-1874" in partnership with JewishGen. I assume that the following is husband and wife since they share a family and tax number. Previous report before this database was that wife was Lippe, but perhaps it should be Zippe, or both.
      A. Laser Herzenberg, age 50 in 1871, b. abt 1821, registration town Piltene, father Lämmchen, Recruit's Enlistment register, Fond #630, family number 9, Oklad (tax reference) # 40.
      B. Zippe Herzenberg, 1871, registration town Piltene, Recruit's Enlistment register, Fond #630, family number 9, Oklad (tax reference) # 40.

      5. There is a discrepancy on the reported children of this individual, which is probably resolved in the the next note after this one:
      A. Nina Kossman reports four children: Boruch, Elias, Itzig, and Abraham.
      B. Leo Herzenberg reports instead the following children:
      a. Isak, b. Libava, Latvia.
      b. Bernhard, b. Lodz, Poland. He had one son David.
      c. Samuel, b. Libava, Latvia. He had a son Leo Herzenberg who was born in South Africa. He in turn had a son Winston who was also born in South Africa but living 1986 to 1996 in North York, Ontario, Canada. The info on this family is per a letter from Winston to Leo dated 26 Feb 1996.
      d. Eduard.

      6. Per email dated 21 Aug 2010 from Len Yodaiken , professional genealogist:
"Jewish genealogy is complex in many ways and I was very happy to receive the tree page that Nina sent me. If you look at the right hand side of it you will see the children of Lasar and Lippe are Boruch. Elias, Itzig and Abraham. If you look at my tree, page 17, you will see that Leyser (spelt differently) had Bernard, Edward and Isaac. Had I found dates for them I am sure that they would have varied also from those of the archives. So what do we learn from this? Firstly that spelling is never consistent, next that the children where given Jewish names at birth, but as the family assimilated into the Germanic culture of Kurland they adapted their names accordingly. We do not know what happened to Abraham or perhaps you do, my guess is that he was one of the fatal cases of infantile mortality so rampant at that time and lastly, Jews never gave the correct years of birth but tried by very many means to make the child much older or younger than he actually was in order to get round or postpone the hateful military draft."
A follow-up email from Ron Lapid dated 28 Aug 2010 notes:
"- Itsig is definitely the Yiddish for Isaac.
      - Boruch (often written "Baruch") is Hebrew. You need to take into account that not all Hebrew names had an automatic translation. If Baruch also had a German name (very likely in Latvia) it would probably be one that had similar sounds like Bernard.
      - Elias is already a Germanic form of Eliahu (Elijah). But it is very Jewish and so if he wanted a less Jewish name Edward could be one of the logical choices.
So all in all I would agree that there is a very high likelihood that all these names relate to the children of Lazar/Leyser. (His Hebrew name was undoubtedly Eliezer)."
Prior to these emails, I had listed Isak separately from Itzig, Bernhard separately from Boruch, and Elias separately from Edward - but I have since combined them.

      7. The Latvian Archives is online and I have reviewed all Registers for Pilten. Registers are in German and I indicate what I don't understand. I extracted all Herzenbergs of which the following excerpts apply to this family:

      DEATH:
      1. Ancestry.com's "Duma Voters Lists 1906-1907;" I assume this is for this individual which would mean his death was probably in Ventspils even though apparently he was buried in his ancestral home of Piltene. The entry:
"Lazer Gertzenberg or Hertzenberg Father: Lemken
