    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Typescript "Early Adairs of Laurens County, South Carolina." Compiled by Mildred Brownlee; Source Records: Wills; Intestate Estates; Deeds; Court Records; Cemetery Inscriptions. Some dates of birth and death obtained from Lineage Charts. Dates of birth and death subject to correction. Spelling of names subject to correction. For this particular individual, there is no connection yet proved except for proximity in time and location thru the following record. [Note that bracketed comments are later additions by other reviewers including myself - Kerry Petersen.]:
"Deed Bk. F, p. 371 - 26 Mar. 1798, George McCrary & Margaret Adair join in selling to Alexander George, 2/3 of a tract on Allison Creek of Duncan Creek, originally granted to William Hanna, 1 Dec. 1769. Wit: Wm. Bolan Jr., Moses Lindsey, Bordy Roberts."
      A. [Comments from Lee Adair email of December 3, 2005: "I have no idea who this Margaret Adair is. There does not appear to be a sales record for the land to anyone prior to 1798, which suggests that a transaction took place prior to the Revolution or that George McCrary and Margaret Adair are in some way William Hanna's surviving heirs. This is what I have:
      a. SC Council Journal of 5 Aug 1766, pp. 809-816. A Petition for a Warrant of Survey by William Hannah for 100 acres on Waters of Saludy. (Surveyor John Caldwell)
      b. SC Council Journal of 6 Jan 1768, pp. 19-22. A plat of 100 acres in Berkeley County certified for William Hannah.
      c. SC Colonial Grant Book 16, p. 130. 21 Dec 1769. A grant to William Hannah for 100 acres in Berkley Co.
      d. SC Memorial Book 10. p. 43. 25 Jan 1770. A memorial exhibited by William Hanna for 100 acres on Allison's Branch of Duncan Creek, all sides vacant. Survey certified 6 Feb 1768, granted 1 Dec 1769.
      e. Laurens Co. Deed Book F, p. 371. 26 Mar 1798. George McCrary and Margaret Adair to Alexander George, 2/3 of tract on Allison's Brook of Duncan Creek, original grant to William Hanna 1 Dec 1769. [This tract is slightly south and east of several tracts of land owned by Joseph Adair]."]
      B. [The following is from Jett Hanna dated 5 Dec 2005: "I'm rusty on William Hanna, but here's some notes that do not appear to address the McCreary deed, but maybe something will shed some light on the situation for you. Take a look at J/277 in the Laurens records, may have some bearing. I've shown William Hannas in other locations, just for completeness, on the land grants. Determination of locations is mine – I didn't get too specific when it wasn't Laurens area:

      c. Information on William Hanna(h), tracts in Laurens County area, 1766-1812. Land shown on land grant maps:
      i. Map 11, Goodwin Crossroads: William Hanna, 150 ac 1784. This, plus one of the 100 ac tracts shown on either map 12 or 4, is subject of two deeds recorded LA DR J:277. First deed: Robert Templeton to Samuel Hanna, dower release Mary. Share of tracts. Mary is likely a daughter of William. Second deed: John, Robert, William (wife Anna), Mary, and James to Samuel Hanna. All are probably children of William, though Mary may be wife who signed due to dower interest. Samuel may have been a child, too, family sold to him. Need to check sale out of Samuel. Is the second deed where David had problem with John? Based on these deeds, could be: Wife Mary and 5 sons: Samuel; John: May be John m. Elizabeth Craig. (If so, his birthdate is 1764. Children and birthdates based on family bible are: Robert: married to ___. Subject of pension application in Robert Hanna Accounts Audited (3301) and federal pension application ___ by wife.); William (wife Anna); James; 1 daughter Mary m. Robert Templeton, moved to Indiana.
      d. Census records 1790:
      i. William No 1: 4 males over 16, 1 female, 1 slave. (William Sr. plus 3 sons?)
ii. William No 2: 2 males over 16, 1 female. (William Jr. plus 1 of Sr.'s sons?)
iii. Robert Templeton: one away from the two Williams. 1 male over 16, 2 under 16, 2 females. (Looks like family of 2 parents, 3 young children. Does this match up with information on Mary Hanna Templeton?
iv. Where is John m. to Elizabeth?
      e. Census records 1800:
      i. William Jr.: 3 young boys, 2 young girls, 2 parents. William and wife are 26-45.
ii. William Sr.: 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, one male 26-45.
iii. Robert, not Esq: 1 young male Child, 2 parents. Robert and wife 26-45.
iv. Samuel: 1 male, 1 female. No kids.
      v. Missing sons: James and John.
vi. Note: 26-45 is birth between 1755-1774: Rules out Samuel shown in 1764 Lunenburg tithes being same as Samuel in 1800 census.
vii. Three other Hannas in Laurens: (1) Robert, Esq: Robert 1744-1821; (2) James: Info matches known on Robert's son, James. Does it match William's son James? (3) John: Info matches known info on Robert's son, John. Does it match William's son John?
viii. Two Hannas in Pendleton District: James; John.
      f. Census records 1810: do not have.
      i. William Hanna, 320 ac 1794: Is this Junior? Need to check deed out.
