    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. The book "Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia, 1671-1750," by Eliza Timberlake Davis, p. 114:
"SAVIDGE, Robert: Leg. To wife, (Mary Savidge) my dwelling place, 265 acres, and at her death to son, Charles Savidge. Mentions son, Lovelis Savidge. Daughter, Olive Andrews, household goods, cattle, etc. Mary Savidge, Exerx. Made: 17 March, 1697/8. Prob.: 3 May, 1698. Book 5, p. 155.

      2. There appears to be a divergence in opinion between Lynn Parham, editor of the Mangum Journal, and John Palmer, author of the Mangum book, both quoted below. Even though it appears both are using the same original records, Lynn suggests that the Olive Savidge who married John Mangum II was a granddaughter of Robert Savidge thru his son Lovelis and that there were actually two Olive Savidges: an aunt (sister to Lovelis) and a niece (dau. to Lovelis). John, on the other hand, suggests that there was only one Olive and she was the dau. of Robert and brother to Lovelis. Lynn is correct for the following reasons:
      a. Lovelis Savidge definitively names Olive as his daughter and married to Mangum. This leaves no doubt as to the relationships. In Robert Savidge's will, Olive is named as a daughter and married to an Andrews.
      b. If John Mangum II was born ca. 1694 as currently theorized, then Olive would have probably been born about the same time or later. In Robert Savidge's will of March 1697/8 [Gregorian Calendar], he names three children. From their will probates, his two sons have subsequent death dates of 1713-1718 and 1728-1729, which is approximately an average generational shift. Judging from his sons' deaths, one would also assume that Robert was in the normal later years making a recently born infant Olive improbable. In fact he names her married as Olive Andrews.

      3. The book "The Mangums of Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Utah and Adjoining States," by John T. Palmer, Santa Rosa, 1992, FHL film 1697868, pp. 4-5, issue of John Mangum and Frances Mangum, first Child: " John Mangum, b. ca. 1703, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA, m. Olive Savidge, dau. of Robert Savage. His [John Mangum's] estate was administered 20 Dec 1744, Surry Co., VA, by Olive Savidge Mangum, m. bef. 6 Oct 1728 who was godparent to four children born in the Albemarle Parish of Surry Co., VA. Parents of these godChildren included William Huler (Hulen) and wife, Selah; Robert Purrier (Pryor/Prior) and wife Frances; and Arthur Richardson and wife, Mary.

      4. Website of Lynn Parham at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lynn.parham/savidge.htm: "We believe John Mangum Jr., son of the immigrant John Mangum, married Olive Savidge. She was apparently a daughter of Robert Savidge of Surry Co., Virginia. In his will of 1697 he names his sons Charles and Lovelis and his daughter Olive. The 1728 will of Loveless Savidge mentions an Olive Manggum. John Mangum Jr. died in 1744 and his estate was administered by Olive Mangum. Olive was a godparent to several children in the Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., Virginia after John's death. We suspect those children were Olive & John's grandchildren. We also suspect that another child was John Mangum (John III?) who moved to Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. His son, John, was a Revolutionary War patriot. His descendants were the subject of a book by Mrs. Delta Ivy Mangum Hale."

      5. "The Mangum-Mangham-Mangrum Journal," Issue No. 49, July 2002, (formerly "Mangum Family Bulletin"), James L. Parham, editor, pp. 21-28, article includes scanned images of the actual documents. The editor notes: "The will of Lovelis Savidge (and inventory) [involves]... Mangums in early Virginia. In this case we believe that John Mangum Jr., son of the immigrant, married into this Savidge family, probably marrying Olive Savidge who is mentioned in the will as Ollife Manggam. The will image is very poor in some sections, and the handwriting is difficult to read. My transcription probably has many errors, so be careful in using this information... (EDITOR'S Comments ON The Will/INVENTORY of LOVELIS SAVIDGE: On 17 March 1697/8 the will of Robert Savidge named sons Charles and Lovelis and dau. Olive. (Probated 3 May 1698. Surry County Bk 5, page 155.). We believe the Lovelis Savidge of the will [below] is that son of Robert mentioned in his 1697/8 will. Lovelis probably named a daughter after his aunt Olive Savidge, and this daughter married John Mangum (Jr.), son of the immigrant John Mangum. There are several records which show that this John Mangum (Jr.) was married to Olive and some of these will be presented in later parts of this series. Note that the clerk who transcribed the will spelled the surname "Savidg", omitting the "e". Olive is spelled "Ollife Manggam." It is unknown if this official record of the will is a faithfully copy of the original will. Of course, Lovelis could not write his name and he had a quite peculiar signature mark like an upside down "L". The spelling in the will was quite poor, even more so than is usual in the antiquated writings of the time. Note also that a James Bennit witnessed the will. There still seemed to be a tie between these "second generation" Mangums and Bennetts. It is unfortunate that I could not decipher the parish where Lovelis resided. If you can make it out from the image supplied, or if you by chance run across a better copy of the will in your Virginia microfilm searches, please let me know. Also, in my copies, the first part of the second page was totally black. That part of the will does not seem to contain anything significant, but if anyone sees the original, or a better microfilm copy, please make a note of it, and if possible a copy for me. Finally, I could not decipher that 'inserted' word after "..of Lovelis Savage..." from beginning of second line of the inventory. Maybe you can?). [Note also that the will is confusing in that is seems to list two separate sons, Lovelis and Lovlis, each receiving a feather bed - I believe this to be a slip of the pen and they are one and the same.]:

      6. Mangum Family Bulletin, REPRINT 1987 (as Issue Number 4), [Originally issued as Volume 1, Number 4], Issue Number 4, December 1969, edited by James Lynn Parham, pp. 49-50: "By 1728(15) we again have a John Mangum in Surry County. On this date a John Mangum witnessed the Will of John Spratley. It was theorized above that this John was a son of the earlier John. Deeds in 1742 and 1743(20,21) indicate that this John's wife was named Olive. With this in mind, some earlier records concerning the Savidge family assume some importance. In 1697(7) the Will of Robert Savidge names sons Charles and Lovelis and daughter Olive. In 1713(11) the Will of Charles Savidge mentions sons Robert and Lovelis. In 1728(16) the Will of Lovelis Savidge mentions Olive Manggum. It is at least possible that Olive, John's wife, was named Olive Savidge before her marriage and she may have been the daughter of Robert Savidge. However, additional clarification is needed here. In 1744(22) the estate of John Mangum deceased was signed by Olive Mangum as administrator. In 1747(23) Olive witnessed the Will of John Richardson and between 1752 and 1754(24,25,26,27) an Olive Mangum was a godparent to four children born in the Albemarle Parish of Surry County.

"John Mangum of EARLY Virginia," by James L. Parham
      Foreword
This article marks the beginning of a series of articles on the Mangum family. The articles will be concerned with specific individuals or families, migrations or other periods of transition. The purpose of the articles are threefold. First, they will attempt to clarify some of the misconceptions concerning various families or persons, second they will present some of the problem areas needing further research, and third they will begin the difficult task of connecting the various Mangum lineages. Many of the conclusions presented will of necessity be by inference or guesswork and will be subject to change as additional information is gained. Readers should use the data presented a basis for further study and not as actual fact. These articles were begun with some hesitancy since they could result in lineage errors is used unwisely. However, a theory or hypothesis is sometimes a great help to a researcher, whether he is a scientist or a genealogist. So, please use caution!
      Introduction
Most researchers with a Mangum ancestor are naturally curious about the origin of the Mangum family in America. This is true even though they are several generations away from connecting their own lineage to the original immigrant and have no assurance that there is actually a connection. The editor is no exception.
Most researchers agree that the first Mangum immigrant came to Virginia shortly before 1700. This is based on the fact that we have found no earlier record of a Mangum in Virginia or any other colony. These early Virginia records concern one or two John Mangums in Isle of Wight and Surry Counties. There has been a great deal of confusion about just what these records mean, with each researcher having his own opinion and basing his opinion on what few records he has. The discussion below will present all records that the editor has been able to obtain and hopefully will clear up some of the confusion concerning these records.
John Mangum of Surry County, Virginia
The first records of a John Mangum in the new world begin on 25 May 1695.(2,3)* On this date Richard Bennett Sr. sold 100 acres of land in Surry County, Va. to John Mingham. John is living in Lower Parish, Surry County, and Richard is living in Upper Parish, Isle of Wight County. On the 23rd of March 1695/6, John Mangum sells this land to George Morrell in exchange for 90 acres of land in Isle of Wight County.(4,5) John is still living in Surry County at this time (Lawnes Creek Parish). You will note that the name is spelled Mingham, Mangum and Mangham in these deeds. Such variations were not uncommon in that day. Names were generally spelled by the way they sounded to the clerks and officials that kept the records. On the 4th of May 1696(6) John Mangham was involved in a court suit. Here, the Surry County records concerning John Mangum appear to stop, at least for a time.
The records above suggest several probabilities. First, if we assume that John was at least 21 years old when he purchased land from Richard Bennett Sr., then we get a birthdate of 1674 or before. The absence of earlier records suggest that he was an immigrant. In later records, we find that John Mangum was closely associated with the Bennett family. A full discussion of these Bennetts is given in References 1 and 28. Lastly, you would expect the absence of further Surry records of a John Mangum to mean that John either moved or died. Here, the obvious conclusion is that he would move to where he had purchased land, that is, Isle of Wight County.
John Mangum of Isle of Wight County, Virginia
In 1704(8) the quit rent of Isle of Wight County lists a John Mangann with 100 acres of land. This is apparently the 90 acres that John bought from George Morrell. The 10 acre discrepancy may possibly be explained by the suggestion that the acreage was given in round figures, but that remains to be seen. In 1707(9) John Mangum witnessed the Will of John Parson, and in 1709(10) he is mentioned in the Will of Richard Bennett Sr.
This John Mangum was apparently married to one Frances ___, granddaughter of Richard Bennett Jr. In 1709 John Mangum is mentioned in the Will of Richard Bennett Sr.(10) In 1720(12) Richard Bennett Jr. names Frances Mangum in his Will and calls her granddaughter. In 1737 Frances Mangum signs the inventory of the estate of John Mangum as administrator.(19)
It is probable that John Mangum married Frances by 1709 and possibly as early as 1695. This latter date is the date of the deed from Richard Bennett Sr. to John Mingham. We have no clue to the parents of Frances, but Boddie(28) lists the children of Richard Bennett Jr. as Richard, Jane(Cofer), Silvester, Ann(Bell) and James. One of these may have been one of her parents.
In 1722(13) Sarah Lancaster, widow of Richard Bennett Sr., names Sarah and Mary Mangum as daughters of John Mangum. Both must have been unmarried at this time. John Mangum left additional records in Isle of Wight(14,17,18) and died in 1737.(19)
In summary, it appears that John Mangum was an immigrant and was born in 1674 or before. He originally lived in Surry county, Virginia but later bought land in Isle of Wight County and moved there. He married Frances, granddaughter of Richard Bennett Jr. Since Frances has relatives in Isle of Wight and may have been born there, this may have provided the incentive for John's move to Isle of Wight. The date of their marriage is uncertain, but must have been no later than 1692. It is probable that they had several children. Possibilities include Sarah and Mary* both unmarried in 1722, William of the Albemarle Parish, Surry County, and Nicholas, Henry and John, all of Surry. William, Henry and Nicholas will be dealt with in later articles.
This first John died in 1737 and administrator of his estate was Frances Mangum.
*An alternate possibility is that Sarah and Mary and even William were grandchildren of John and Frances.
John Mangum II of Surry County, Virginia
By 1728(15) we again have a John Mangum in Surry County.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Some of the references and helpful comments were supplied by Mr. Joseph F. Inman, 508 Seneca Rd, Richmond, VA 23226(Genealogist) and Mr. Thomas M. Powell, 606 Highland Ave., Henderson, N. C. 27536. The next planned article will deal with the family of Henry Mangum of Early Virginia.

      8. The book "Colonial Surry," by John B. Boddie, copy in the Courtland, Virginia public library, pp. 200-201, has a list named "A List of Tithables Taken June 10, 1694" which contains the following individuals with the surname Savage, which may or may not be a variant spelling of Savidge:
      Charles Savage, 1
      Henry Savage, 1
      Robert Savage, 1

      9. The following transcriptions are various land and tithable records from 1681 on showing the Savage family. The mentions are incidental to the transcriber's research into the family of Phillips and may not be 100% complete. In reviewing these limited records, I make the following observations:
      1. Charles is mentioned from 1681 on and Robert from 1685 in descriptions of various land deeds. No Lovelis is mentioned until 1719/1720. Henry is mentioned from 1735.
      2. In the tithables (taxes), both Charles and Robert are mentioned from 1681 on. In 1697, Robert appears for the last time. The two Charles show up (the original one plus one associated near Jno. Baker) in 1696 and 1697. Lovelis shows up for the first time in 1700. This roughly coincides with Robert's death in 1698 where he names his two sons Charles and Loveless in the will. From the two Charles listed, it would appear that perhaps there was an older Charles and a younger Charles. Perhaps the older could be a brother to Robert, but not knowing the exact age of Robert, he may have been a son - it does seem strange though that Loveless only appears from 1700 on whereas Charles was 1681 on. The junior Charles could have been the son of Robert or perhaps the son of the original Charles - more info is needed to sort out this puzzle.
      3. A Henry shows up in tithables from 1691 on in Lawne's Creek Parish, and then exclusively in Southwark Parish from 1694 on. His exact connection to the other Savages/Savidges is currently unknown.
      4. Sarah ___ is confirmed the wife of the Loveless who is the son of Robert.
      5. In the tithables, a Mary Savage is identified in 1699 and a "Widdow" Savage in 1701. These could very well be the same person and the wife of the deceased Robert of 1698.
Transcription from the Surry County Virginia Records: Email from Debra [mailto:kylea@jps.net] April 01, 2007; Re: Savage family in regards to the Phillips family: "The Savage family lived very near my Phillips; they were neighbors. When you pull the Surry CO VA Surry records you will soon understand this. I am going to attach one of my files for you. I do have many of these original records (scanned), but not all. I still have quite a bit to add to this file = it is always a work in progress. Though the focus is on the various Phillips that lived in the area during this time period, there are several Savage records. The focus of this file is aimed at specific individuals or families who lived in Colonial Surry CO, VA (area) prior to 1760, and is specifically focused on the Phillips family... The data (records) presented are a basis for further study, but readers should not use the hypothesis and theories as fact.
      A. County Formation Background: Isle of Wight and James City Counties were (both) formed in 1634 and were original Shires. Isle of Wight was formerly known as Warrosquyoacke; name changed to Isle of Wight (IOW) in 1637.
Lawne's Creek Parish VA was established by the General Assembly in 1640 in that part of James City County south of the James which would later become part of Surry CO VA (formed 1652). It bore the name of Capt. Christopher Lawne who settled in 1619 in the area which was referred to as Lawne's Plantation and Lawne's Creek. This parish was small, beginning "from the Mouth of Hogg Island creek along by the James river to Lawnes Creek and from Lawnes creek to the head of the uppermost branches of the said creek and from the head of the branches of Lawnes creek to the branches of Chippokes [Chipoakes] creek westerly and thence to the mouth of Chippokes creek and thence to Hogg Island creek." (Charles Francis Cocke, Parish Lines Diocese of Southern Virginia, Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA, 1979, p. 58) Southwarke Parish, established in 1647, covered the large area between the two Chippokes, whereas the Lawne's Creek Parish covered the relatively narrow area between Lower Chippokes (Lower Chipoakes) and Lawne's Creek. When Surry County was formed from James City County (the part south of the James) in 1652, it included both Lawnes Creek Parish and Southwarke Parish. Surry County, Virginia, was named for the English County of Surrey. County court records begin with 1652. In 1720 Brunswick CO, was formed from parts of Prince George CO, Isle of Wight CO and Surry CO. Portions of Lawnes Creek Parish and Southwarke Parish thus became part of St. Andrew's Parish in Brunswick County VA. Brunswick County was not fully organized until 1732, so look for records in both jurisdictions during this time period. In Nov 1738 the General Assembly "enacted the parishes of Southwark and Lawne's Creek be divided by the Blackwater River." (Cocke, p. 60) Therefore, portions of the two parishes between the James and Blackwater River became Southwark, and those south of the Blackwater were joined to form the new parish of Albemarle, the name Lawne's Creek parish fading into history.
Southampton CO, VA was formed April 30, 1749 from Isle of Wight and Nansamond. It is located South of Surry but adj to it. It is also located adj to Isle of Wight to the West. Surry, IOW and Southampton all come together in a "tri county" area.
Sussex County was formed in 1753 from the part of Surry County that was south of the Blackwater River."
