    • RESEARCH_NOTES: 1. Website http://mysite.verizon.net/vze3sbrn/Benjamin.htm accessed 19 Nov 2011, "Geneology Information - Applegates of Ocean County, New Jersey," prepared by Richard Kuntz, Allenwood, NJ (updated - 11/2009); source abbreviations are explained on the website:
"William Johnson (Benjamin) Note: It is a suppostion that this William is the son of Benjamin. Proof required.
The following will abstract is found in NJAW: 1811, Dec 30. Johnston, William, of Dover Twsp., Monmouth Co.; will of: Lands to be equally divided between 6 sons, Jonathan, Samuel, Joseph, John, William, James. Cedar swamp lying north of road to go with and remain for use of the old place. Son Joel, blacksmith's tools, he having had his share of land. To 6 daughters, Naomi Winner, Sarah Johnston, Hannah Aston, Lucretia Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Lydia Shumard all moveable estate to be equally divided except one bed and bedding which I gave to Eliza Phillips. Executors, Jonathan Johnston, John Johnston (signed by mark), Garret Irons. Witnesses - Samuel Morris, William Phillips. Proved Apr. 2, 1812.
A marriage license for Monmouth County is recorded in State Archives First Series Vol. XXII between William Johnston and Jane Polhemos dated 6/5/1782.
Note: There is some question as to whether William had a wife before Jane Polhemos, since the 1850 Census has Jonathan's birth ca. 1778 which is 4 years before his marriage to Jane. Some notes located in the Monmouth County Historical Society have indicated that William was married three times. He married first Elizabeth Longstreet, second Sarah Aumack, and third Jane Polhemus. At this point, I have not found official documents that substantiate that inference.
