    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. This individual was created solely as a repository to the 7 individuals linked to him as Children. I chose the name of Eleazer since they were all previously linked as children to Eleazer Herzenberg and Amalie Hirshman; however, that may not be a correct name at all. They were found to be in error and are temporary parked with unconnected Herzenbergs awaiting better research.
See notes of Eleazer who married Amalie Hirshman for an excerpt from the Latvia Archives research report dated 28 Feb 2011 which lays out the proper children for the couple. The correct information created is a large conflict with information we were previously using. Peter Herzenberg on his comprehensive Herzenberg listing showed six different children in his family group 4.11a then what the merchant list in the above-referenced report shows. His are Isaac 1863, Samuel 1867, Bernard, Herman 1870, Edward 1875, and Leo 1878 (listed as #5.17 - 5.22). Peter sources his information back to Leo Herzenberg, but his information conflicts with other information of Leo's found in the "Leonard Herzenberg Memoirs." The memoirs follows the merchant's lists very closely. The Memoirs read:
"GREAT-UNCLE LAZER I had met [64] in Goldingen, also his wife Amalie Hirschman. They had a beautiful house in Goldingen with a huge orchard, and it was said of the aunt that she made the workers sing songs during the harvest so they would not snack on the fruit. That counted in those days as the peak of avarice. In those days, in the country, one "stos" (about a liter) of berries, whether blueberries, strawberries, or Johannberries sold for a kopeck, around a penny, and other fruit was similarly cheap. Their children were Leonhard, Isidor, Edward, Moritz, Robert, Johanna, Bertha, Rosa, Sara, and Dorothea. I knew only Moritz, who carried on the father's business in Goldingen. he was married to Rosa Steinberg and had a single daughter Lina. I also met one of the daughters, I no longer know which one; She was very pretty [65] and well educated, but even more conceited [sehr gebildet, aber noch mehr eingebildet], and when I was in her home still as a student she behaved very haughtily. That happened because the families of the great-uncle were mostly very wealthy, and looked down on the generation of my parents who already found the fight for existence much more difficult, as if they were poor relations."

      2. Ancestry.com's "Latvia: Courland Registers and Family Lists, 1845-1874" in partnership with JewishGen searched on the surname "Herzenberg" using exact spelling gives a list of 23 hits. They are all for 1868-1874 for the registration towns of Piltene, Liepaja (Libau), Kuldiga (Goldingen), Aizpote (Hasenpoth), and Bauska. I can match-up most of them except for the following:
      A. Liepaja:
      a. Family/oklad (tax) no. 172/444 [probably husband and wife]:
-Emma Herzenberg, registered 1868, father's name Heymannson.
-Joseph Herzenberg, b. abt 1809, registered 1868, father's name: Hirsch.
      b. Family/oklad (tax) no. 169/439: Laura Herzenberg, registered 1868, father: Levin Herzenberg.
      B. Bauska; this town is a ways off from the other towns. The following two are most likely husband and wife:
      -Hirsch Herzenberg, b. abt 1837, registered 1874.
-Sorre [Sarah] Leie Herzenberg, b. abt 1839, registered 1874.
      C. Aizpute; the following two are most likely brothers:
-Family/oklad (tax) no. 203/859: Lewin Herzenberg, b. abt 1827, registered 1871, father: Gabriel.
-Family/oklad (tax) no. 14/891: Hirsch Herzenberg, b. abt 1837, registered 1871, father: Gabriel.
      D. Piltene (not found in our database): Family/oklad (tax) no. 91/372 "Marcus Herzenberg, b. abt. 1850, registered 1871, father "Bär".
