    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. FHL book 929.242 G868f "The Greswold Family, 12 Generations in England," researched and edited by Robert L. and Esther G. French, comp. by Coralee Griswold [Wethersfeld, CT; 1999]. The authors standardize spelling as Greswold for England and Griswold for America. As of 2012, it appears that this book is the most current evolution of the Griswold ancestry and includes all previous research up to 1999 when it was published. (It also supersedes the author's own work in 1990 for the later English generations). See notes in this database of the original Griswold for a more detailed explanation of the various sources and a bibliography of previously published books that the authors include in this genealogical compilation.
"John6 Greswold (Jobn5, William4, Richard3, Ralph2, John1) of Solihull (and Longdon Hall, home of his mother [Dugdale, quoted by Glenn Griswold]) and Rowington was born about 1414 (age 44 at death of his uncle Thomas in 1458).
In 1459, John6 conveyed to his brother Richard (who died in 1465) the property he inherited from their father John5. He married Elizabeth BEYNHAM, probably just before 1440. [Her surname does not appear on Pemberton's chart but support for this identity is on p.1 of the Woodall "Notes." It also is shown in Dugdale's "Antiquities" under Dabridgecourt in the pedigree of his great-granddaughter, Alice, wife of Thomas Dabridgecourt.] She was the daughter of Thomas BEYNHAM of Henley. John died about 1473 in Rowington, Warwickshire, England. Elizabeth also died in Rowington, Warwickshire, England.
In the next two generations, the Greswolds divided among Solihull, Longdon and Rowington.
      They had 3 children:
      i. John Greswold, born about 1440. He is the John Greswold, Esq. who died 1481, for whom the writ was issued in Feb 1482 (according to the 1473 deed [see p. 16], he then lived in Rowington).
ii. Anne Greswold, born about 1442/1445 . She married Thomas4 HAWES (Thomas3, John2, Richard1) of Edlicott in 1465. [Carpenter always refers to this family under the surname, HORE. The name HAWES does not appear in her index.] He was born 1440. Thomas died 1540, at the age of 100. They were namesakes (five generations later) of the couple who married 150 years earlier. [See the "Hawes Genealogy" with David Patterson letter and the Pemberton chart. The "Hawes Genealogy" says this Thomas lived from 1440-1540!?! This would also mean that Anne was the oldest of this generation and it would place her father's birth about 1415. Glenn Griswold's notes there are inscriptions in the Hawes mansion in Solihull regarding this marriage which are in a "Bridges Manuscript" in the Bodleian Library.]
iii. Robert Greswold, born about 1450, as he received property in 1473 and in 1481. He presumably stayed at Olton in Solihull. He may have been of the next generation as he appears first in 1473, in records that also include John7 and Richard8. The only other record so far is the release mentioned showing him at Olton in 1481."
