      2. Ancestry.com's "US Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970" for Asher C. Bennett, of Indiana, membership #25848, 1915. He states his lineage as:

New Jersey Militia, Colonels Elisha Laurence and Samuel Forman, enlisted Nov. 1776, promoted Orderly Sergeant,.Served every alternate month until the close of the Revolutionary War 1783.

      3. Ancestry.com's "Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900": Aaron Bennett, New Jersey, b. in R.I. #S.597 and #5136. Monmouth Co. in the State of New jerseey who was a Sergeant in the Company commanded by Captain Randolph of the N.J. Militia. Pension applied for in 1831 and approved 4 Mar 1833. 7 Jun 1832 application notes, residing at Dover Twp., age 82, b. 17 Aug 1750. He joined Nov. 1776 under Captain Ruben Randolph of the Twp. of Stafford in Monmouth Co., monthly every other month in the capacity of Orderly Sergt. for between 2 or 3 years. "Capt. Randolph was court-martialled and broke, or in some way displaced - David Bennett was appointed Captain in his place who was a brother of this applicant" under whom he served as Orderly Sergeant every other month and occasionally upon alarms until the end of the war. His area of service included the townships of Dover and Stafford and into Burlington Co. He was constantly "under arms to repel the attacks of the British and Refugees, who through the numerous Inlets and Bays along that part of the Coast found an easy and ready access by means of then shipping to all that part of the County bordering upon the oceans - that numerous salt works were erected all along the Shore, and one great object of the enemy was to destroy them and the militia was frequently called out to guard them - That at Toms River which was Head Quarters for the Militia in that part of the County - there was a Blockhouse erected and fortified with some piece of artillery - that a member of the Militia were constantly stationed there, until the Block House was destroyed by the British he thinks in 1781. It was at the time defended by Capt. Ruddy who was taken by the British and hanged." He spent some time guarding the Block House. He was "out under Col. Lawrence with the Militia, when the British rebels entered Egg Harbor Inlet and landed their forces at Chesnut Necks in Egg Harbor Township, Burlington County, and remained for two or three days plundering the inhabitants and burning their buildings - they were finally driven off by the Militia under Col. Lawrence - that this applicant was sent with an armed boat into the Bay to watch the movements of the Rebels - and therefor had no part in the skirmish - that another time he was in service in Toms River - a British rebel entered Cranberry Inlet with British and Refugees - Cap. Bennett's, Capt Jenkin's and Capt. Stout's Companies of Militia were ordered down, attacked the Rebels, and forced her to Sea - that as Orderly Sergeant he was frequently sent to transport and guard British and Refugees taken prisoner to the Gaols at Monmouth - always a hazardous duty in consequence of the efforts that their friends made to rescue them." He has no discharge papers or documents and all the officers he served under are dead. He knows no one can testify to his service except for Zachariah Hawkins. He was born August 17, 1750 at Coventry County, Rhode Island and that his age is recorded on his family bible. He was living in Stafford Twp. [Monmouth Co.] when he entered the service.
Zachariah Hawkins, age 78, testifies he has known Aaron for 60 years and confirmed his service. Garret Irons and Samuel White of Dover testify also in his behalf.
Some later third party correspondence inquiring about the pension mentions David Bennett, Aaron's brother, died in Oneida, NJ.
It is not stated whether Aaron Bennett was ever married or not.

      4. Ancestry.com's "New Jersey Tax Lists" for Dover Twp., Monmouth, NJ: Aaron Bennett: Oct 1783, Jun 1789, Jun 1793, June 1796.

      5. From Mike Morrissey: "Men enrolled in the Militia in Dover in 1793" (ages 18-45). These are the only men listed with the corresponding surnames. The Irons family are potentially related by James Irons marrying Nelle Longstreet, a daughter of Gisbert Longstreet:
Phillips: Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, Richard, and Andrew.
      Johnston: George, William, and Benjamin.
      Winner: Isaac.
      Bennett: Aaron.
      Irons: James and John.
There may be other surnames of interest, but these are all that Mike provided to me by email.

      6. Email from Mike Morrissey 17 Jun 2004 mikemorr@hotmail.com:
"Reuben Haines had a store near Toms River. His account book for 1816-1822 (mostly 1816-1818) was abstracted in the "Genealogical Magazine of NJ." Among the names listed were:
Aron Bennett [later husband of Naomi]
      Moses Bennett [son of Aaron]
Garrett Irons [1st cousin of Naomi]
      Ezekial Johnson
      Jacob Johnson
      Joel Johnson [brother of Naomi]
      Jonathan Johnson [brother of Naomi]
Joseph Johnson [possible brother of Naomi]
      Joshua Johnson
Samuel Johnson (& daughter) [possible brother of Naomi]
      Richard Phillips
      Samuel Phillips
William Phillips [son of Andrew and Naomi]
Mr. Winner [KP note: probably Isaac since probably all of Isaac's oldest children were in Ohio or on their way]
      Mrs. Winner
Except for the Irons, I have listed all those of a given surname. Andrew Phillips is not listed. That does not prove he was dead, but it is likely. The only Bennetts listed are Aaron and his son, Moses. That makes it seem likely that he was the 3rd husband of Naomi."

      BIRTH:
      1. Ancestry.com's "Rhode Island Births, 1636-1930": Aaron Bennett, 25 Aug 1750, son of Samuel Bennett, Jr. and Sarah Bennett.
According to Rev. War pension application, Aaron was b. in Coventry Co., RI, 17 Aug 1750. We may be looking at the same Aaron.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. At the FHL, I checked "Marriages of Monmouth Co., 1795-1843" and did not find any entries for either Aaron Bennett or Andrew Phillips.
