      2. Letter written by William Johnson Ashton (1796-1883) to Thomas Hutchinson Ashton (1841-1914) per https://www.werelate.org/images/3/3f/Wm_J._Ashton_letter_1875-09-08.pdf accessed 16 Oct 2017:
      "Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio
      September 8th, 1875
      Mr. Thomas H. Ashton
      Dear Sir
Your letter of the 28th of August is received though [by] accident as it was directed to Williamsburg, Brown County, instead of Clermont County which is my P.O. address.
When I received your letter my wife was at the point of death and died on the 3rd of September after three years of severe affliction.
I will begin the genealogy of my father as far back as my knowledge extends first my ancestors emigration from England under William Penn the founder and settler of Bucks County Pennsylvania.
My grandfather’s name was William Ashton the date of his birth I have no knowledge of.
My father’s name was Samuel Ashton. He was born February 1771. He had one sister older than himself who was burned to death when a young woman. They were born and raised in Bucks County. My grandmother’s maiden name was Hutchinson. She had one brother Thomas Hutchinson after whom my brother Thomas was named and one sister Rebecca Hutchinson who married Dr. Edward Chatman a physician who raised my
father as his father died when he was only three years old.
The Hutchinsons of Massachusetts that you refer to I have no knowledge of. My father had relatives by the name of Taylor. I have forgotten how they were related. All the families I have named were of the Quaker profession. [KM’s note: “In other renditions of this letter they say he used the word persuasion here, but now I can see it is profession as in "profession of faith."]
I will now give you as correct a description of my mother’s family as I can - My grandfather’s name was William Johnson, he was born in Monmouth Co, New Jersey near Toms River, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War & fought in battles in Monmouth, Brandywine, White Plains.
My grandmother’s name was Longstreth. She was born in [Rhode] Island. I have no knowledge of the date of their birth they had a large family twelve children in all six girls and six boys the oldest were girls. The oldest girl’s name was Neomy, Hannah, Lucretia, Elizabeth, Sarah and Lydia, the boys names were Jonathan, John, Samuel, Joseph, Joel and James.
I have now given you the most accurate account that I possess. I have now traced the family down to your [father’s] recollection. Perhaps he can give you some information that I have failed to give.
My father was married to Hannah Johnson October 14 1795 and emigrated to Fayette County [Western (?)] Pennsylvania in the fall of 1799 where he remained until the Spring of 1807 when he moved to Washington County. In the Spring of 1811 he emigrated to Clermont County Ohio where he endured the hardships of pioneer life.
This narrative is not what I should desire yet it is the best that I can accomplish out of the materials I possess.
This is from your true friend,
      WJ Ashton
P.S. Enclosed is a letter to your father James Ashton. Please forward to him and oblige yours truly, WJA"
Notes from Kim Matul, November 2013: The original letter is in the collection at the library in the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where Bucks County historical records are held ... This letter was transcribed by Rebekah Medaugh Carlisle and Kim Matul, November 3-4, 2013."
