    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. The periodical "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record," 120[1989]:10-17, 94-97, 160-163; 121[1990]:221-225, etc., "Descendants of the Rev. Richard Denton," by Walter C. Krumm. I have divided up this article and included each generation with the individual detailed (see notes of Rev. Richard Denton for summary of all other publications and researchers prior to this publication):
"Richard3 Denton (Nathaniel2, Rev. Richard1) was born say 1658 in Jamaica, Long Island. He first appears in 1682 as a witness on a bill of sale signed by his father as town clerk (JTR 1:216), a possible indication that he was of age.
Richard married say 1686 Mary Thurston of Jamaica, Long Island, daughter of Joseph Thurston and his wife Ann (___), widow of Thomas Foster (see 1697 deed from Thomas Foster [Jr.] to heirs of Joseph Thurston, JTR 2:248). Richard is the son who left Jamaica to settle in the Foster's Meadow section of Hempstead, probably at the time of his marriage. The 1683 "Towne Estate" list of Jamaica shows Richard as 1 "head" owning 2 horses, with an estate value of £42 (DHNY 1:521). On 2 February 1688/9 he is identified as "of Hempstead" when his father gave him acreage in Jamaica (JTR 1:317-8). Within a month Richard sold this "inheritance" to his brothers (JTR 3:318-9). Later that same year he was appointed a member of the New York. Committee of Safety, which attempted to govern the province in the Protestant interest following the departure of the Catholic Governor Dongan (DHNY 2:11, 24). In the 1690s he sold off other Jamaica property he owned, including land he obtained from the above-mentioned Thomas Foster [Jr.] of Mullmouth River, Salem County, New Jersey, a half-brother of his wife (JTR 2:42, 48-9).
Richard and his brother Samuel both died in May 1699; Richard's will was drawn on 16 April and proved on 18 May (QCDW A:137, REC. 65:248). Regrettably the will is general in its provisions, leaving the estate in the hands of his wife Mary "that now is" [possibly indicating a second marriage?] until the children, listed only as "sons and daughters," came of age. Overseers of the children until that time were "brothers" Nathaniel Denton of Jamaica and John Foster [husband to his sister Phebe].
Children of Richard Denton, presumably all by Mary (Thurston), all probably born in Hempstead, Long Island (names from 1698 census, REC. 45:65):
      i. Richard4, Jr., b. say 1687.
ii. Mary, b. say 1689; no record after 1698.
iii. Sarah, b. say 1691; m. say 1718 to John Wheeler of Hartford, Conn., and moved there. Inventory of John Wheeler taken 21 Jan. 1724/5, after administration of his estate granted to his widow Sarah and her brother Benjamin Denton of Farmington on the previous day (Charles W. Manwaring, comp., "A Digest of Early Connecticut Probate Records," 2[1904]:611). Sarah d. 17 Nov. 1763, bur. Center Church, Hartford. There is no marriage date, but the first child was b. 10 Mar. 1719 [=1718/19] (Lucius B. Barbour, "Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut," 1977, p. 670).
      iv. Joseph, b. say 1693.
      v. Hannah, b. say 1695; no record after 1698.
      vi. Benjamin, b. say 1697."

(Online database. NewEnglandAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2005.) The statements are sourced, but I did not copy them yet. The following is partial quote of the full transcript in the notes of Nathaniel the father:
"Nathaniel2 Denton (Richard1), b. March 1628 in Bolton, Lancashire, England, bp. there on 9 March 1629, and a second time later in life, on 9 March 1682; d. bef. 18 Oct. 1690 in Jamaica, Queens Co., N.Y.; m. poss. Sarah ____ prob. by 1653...
Nathaniel's three sons can be identified from the land grants he made to them while he lived; he also had one and possibly two daughters. Their birthdates and chronological order remain uncertain.
Children of Sarah ____ and Nathaniel2 Denton, all born in Hempstead (pre-1656) or Jamaica, Long Island:
      i. Nathaniel3 Denton Jr., b., say, 1653.
      ii. Samuel3 Denton, b., say, 1655.
      iii. Richard3 Denton, b., say, 1658.
iv. Phebe3 Denton, b., say, 1652 [KP: Typo: 1662?]; m. John Foster. In their wills, Nathaniel3 named "brother Foster," and Richard3 "brother - John Foster," as an overseer.
      v. Maria3 Denton, b., say, 1664, bp. 18 June 1664."

      3. Miscellaneous comments from Worldconnect accessed 14 Feb 2010: "Richard was living in Foster's Meadow, LI before 1658. He left a will recorded at Jamacia Deeds A-137 dated April 16, 1699 and proved May 18, 1699. Wife Mary, sole exec. 2 brothers, Nathaniel Denton and John Foster overseers of the children."
