1. The periodical "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record," 120[1989]:10-17, 94-97, 160-163; 121[1990]:221-225, etc., "Descendants of the Rev. Richard Denton," by Walter C. Krumm. I have divided up this article and included each generation with the individual detailed (see notes of Rev. Richard Denton for summary of all other publications and researchers prior to this publication):
"Hezekiah4 Denton (Samuel3, Nathaniel2, Rev. Richard1) was born in Jamaica, 10 March 1697/8; Combes (p. 23a) gives this date, citing Queens County Deeds B2:536, which is merely a 1711 bond by brother Samuel identifying Hezekiah as a brother still under 21; however the 1698 date seems reasonable.
His marriage say 1725 to Mary Coe is established by three documents: Mary Coe was born in Newtown, Long Island, 17 April 1701, the daughter of Robert Coe, as shown in the Newtown town minutes (REC. 64:34; see also Bartlett, "Robert Coe," pp. 83-84); the will of John Coe of Newtown (WNYHS 3:179), brother of Robert, left property to Benjamin Hinchman and "my nieces Abigail Coe, Mary Denton, and Hannah Wood"; and Hezekiah's will named his wife Mary and his "cousin Benjamin Hinchman" as executors.
In his short life he participated with his cousin Robert Denton in the 1719 fracas over collecting the tax for the Anglican minister (ER 2135). By trade a blacksmith (his will), he consolidated and enlarged the land holdings inherited from his father (e.g. JTR 3:180-1). He served in public offices: in 1733 as Trustee of Highways (JTR 3:415), and in 1734 as Townsman (JTR 3:414). He probably did not complete this last term, for when he drew his will on 18 March, 1734/5, he acknowledged "being sick"; it was proved 5 April 1735 (NYCW 12:311, WNYHS 3:173). He specified the selling of his lands, allotted £40, three cows, one horse and one woman's saddle to his wife, and apportioned the proceeds to his children (named) when they came of age.
His widow married Joseph Smith of Newtown (Bartlett, p. 84).
The children of Hezekiah and Mary (Coe) Denton were:
i. Samuel5, b. say 1727 in Jamaica; m. Sarah Ludlum, dau. of Isaac and Catherine (Gale) Ludlum of Goshen, Orange Co., N.Y. (Eardeley, p. 71 cites Middleton, N.Y., "Independent Republican," 23 Feb. 1926 and [p. 161-5] "First Presbyterian Church of Goshen, NY," 1932, p. 112; see also Orange Co. Gen. Soc. [quarterly] 17:10). His will (drawn 19 Apr. 1796, proved 13 Feb. 1797) identified him as a hatter, mentioned his wife, 9 of their 11 children, and several grandchildren (Orange Co. Wills A:401).
ii. Mary, b. say 1729; no mention after father's will.
iii. Abigail, m. 25 Mar. 1753 to Benjamin Field in the Newtown Presbyterian Church (Newt. 34).
iv. Hanna, b. say 1732; m. 17 May 1755 John Alburtus (Newt. 35) and had 7 children (AnN 397)."
2. Miscellaneous comments from Worldconnect accessed 14 Feb 2010, which describes the will of Samuel Denton, sibling to this individual: "Surrogate 9-42 Will of Samuel Denton of Jamaica, blacksmith, dated April 25, 1718, proved April 7, 1719. Mentions wife Martha, mother (not named), two brothers - Jacomiah and Hezekiah, also Samuel and Clement and Susannah, children of my sister Sarah Mills and Robert, John, Mary, Abraham and Ebenezer and Samuel, children of sister Clement Smith."
