      Merton Silver
      Merton Jack Silver, 83, of Palm Desert died June 16, 2006, in Palm Desert of prostate cancer.

      He was born Jan. 10, 1923, to Morris and Freda Silver in San Francisco.

      He married Rita M. Tarbert in 1948 in Santa Rosa.

      A veterinarian since 1953, he practiced large animal medicine until 1966, then began a feline specialty practice.

      He served in the Air Force as a pilot and flight instructor from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of second lieutenant.

      He was a member of the Masonic Order Yosemite Lodge 99 and the Croquet Club at Marakesh Country Club, a board member for Silver Spur Rancher's Association and a volunteer at Eisenhower Medical Center.

      He is survived by his wife, Rita Silver of Palm Desert; three daughters, Pamela Silver of Palm Desert, Joan Morgan of Houston and Martha Silver of Sacramento; a son, Scott Silver of Palm Desert; and four grandchildren.

      A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn in Cathedral City.

      The family suggests that donations be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice in Palm Desert.
