    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. While researching in England June 2009 at Heddon-on-the-Wall (where I found the tombstone of Thomas Charlton and Elizabeth Ferguson), I met a local resident with the surname Charlton who is a descendant through this John. He put me in touch with his brother Norman Charlton 16, Severn Close, Peterlee, County Durham, England SR81JX. They indicate that John was b. 1811 and md. Mary ___ who was chr. 28 May 1804 at Minsteracres. They had the following children b. about the following dates: George 1846, Elizabeth 1847, John 1848, Margaret 1848, and Annie ??. The information is very sketchy and I have not had any success in finding John in the censuses or anywhere else for that matter. I wrote 30 Aug 2009 for more concrete and detailed information if they have it. I never received a response and I suspect that there research was superficial only without much supporting fact.
They also indicated that they believe Thomas' father was another Thomas Charlton. I have never heard that and and have asked them for more information on that as well.

      2. Search of 1881 British Census for John Charlton 10 years either side of 1816 produced many hits for Northumberland and Durham counties but information is too sketchy to use. No success in using the combination of children and dates provided by Norman Charlton per the note above.
