- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. We cannot totally prove this Dorothy (chr. 27 Jul 1798 at Saint John Lee) is in fact the daughter of Thomas Charlton and Elizabeth Ferguson since the christening record does not give the mother's maiden name, but there is much circumstantial evidence which I summarize as follows that leads us to conclude that it is probable.
This Charlton family, including Dorothy, shows up in the LDS patron-submitted records in the 1930s when family members took the Charlton names to the LDS temples. The LDS connection to this Charlton family is because one daughter, Elizabeth Charlton, married Isaac Burnhope and emigrated in the mid-1850s with the LDS Church to Utah. This would lead us to believe that perhaps because of tradition passed down from Elizabeth, Dorothy was part of the family. This early LDS work was sketchy in regards to birth dates and places, but for some time Dorothy was guessed to have been born about 1808 in Hexham, Northumberland. Some of the other children's births were approximated and it is until only relatively recently that more specific dates and places have been found.
A search of the 1881 British Census for Dorothy Pearson 20 years either side of 1808 wasn't successful. There is a Dorothy Pearson that shows up in 1841 and 1851 as a widow with a son named Stephen Pearson. Her birth is indicated at 1798 at St. John Lee in Northumberland. LDS IGI also has an extracted marriage record evidently for this same Dorothy, which shows Dorothy Charlton, md. at Lee Saint John, Northumberland 17 Aug 1822 to Stephen Pearson. Lee Saint John is not consistent with a Dorothy who should be the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth in Heddon-on-the-Wall; however, both the father Thomas Charlton was of nearby Newbrough and the mother Elizabeth Ferguson was of Hexham. Lee Saint John is a very near the large abbey church in Hexham and may be the source of the traditionally "Hexham" supposed as the birthplace of Dorothy. IGI has another entry, not extracted, that shows a Dorothy Charlton b. 15 Apr 1808 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, md. 21 May 1835 in Ontario county, New York to James Settle. Even though our Dorothy would not have been born there, it may account for the "Abt 1808" traditionally used for a supposed birthdate of our Dorothy.
The Dorothy born at Newcastle in 1808 was the daughter of Thomas Charlton and Eleanor Scott and she came to America by 1830 with her family. There is much information on her on Worldconnect and her life in America. She married first Robert Cox in New Orleans in 1830 and then James Settle in 1835 in the same place. She definitely is not our Dorothy.

The name spellings (and probably the record) are latin as was common among the Catholic Church.
