"Joseph Loomis, b. Messing, Co. Essex, England, a. 1615,; m. 1st, Sept. 17, 1646, Sarah, bapt. Feb. 2, 1621, d. Aug. 23, 1653, eldest dau. of Wm. and Phillis (dau. of Richard and Sarah (Osborne) Lyman, who emigrated from High Onger, Co. Essex, Eng., 1631) Hill, of Windsor; m. 2nd, June 28, 1659, Mary Chauncey, who d. Apr. 22, 1681. Her parentage is not known. The History of the Treman Family in America, p. 1688, places her as the dau. of Pres. Charles Chauncey of Harvard, but this is doubted - at least, no conclusive evidence has ever been found. Neither does Judith Chauncey, spinster, the half-sister of Pres. Charles, mention her in her will dated Dec., 1657, proven March 1, 1657-8 (see Waters' Gleanings, Vol. I, pp 107-8), wherein she mentions many of her 'cousins' and other relatives. Neither does the 'Pedigree of the Family of Chauncey,' compiled by Stephen Tucker, Esq., Somerset Herald in Ordinary, 1884, name a Mary which could possibly have been Mary, wife of Joseph Loomis. On May 3rd, 1643, he had granted him from the Plantation four acres of land, bounded north by land of Joseph Loomis, the elder. In Vol. I, of lands, in office of Sec'y of State of Connn., this entry occurs: Joseph Lumas Jr. Owner of land before 1653, at Windsor, Conn. in 1660, by purchase, he acquired land on the east side of the Conn. River. In 1686 he conveyed a part of this land to his son Joseph, and a part of his son John. He was a member of Windsor troop of horse, in King Phillip's War, 1675-6, (see soldiers in King Phillip's War, by Geo. M. Bodge, 1896), and was granted 6s 8d 'on war account.' He was a freeman in 1654, and d. June 26, 1687. 12 ch'n, all b. Windsor."

On 20 July 1638 "Mr. Hill merchant of Dorchester" sold to Edward Breck of Dorchester his homelot at the neck (four acres), a hill valued at nine acres (which he had received in place of an earlier grant of twelve acres), eleven acres of meadow (six acres which was granted to him and five acres which was granted to Thomas Marshfield), one acre at the end of Mr. Withington's lot (with the house on it and five acres of stinted commons), eight acres and ten goads in the Cow Pasture (and so on to every five hundred acres), together with common and privileges in land beyond Naponset (eight acres ten goads to every division) and "also his part of the land lately granted by the court unto the said town according to the same proportion" [DTR 34]. William Hill had also earlier sold to William Clark a small lot at the Great Neck and seven acres at Squantum Neck [DTR 37, 43]. In the Windsor land inventory on 28 October 1640 William Hill held eight parcels: "a parcel of land on the north side of the rivulet in the palisado"; "a garden plot adjoining"; two acres and a half in the Great Meadow, sixteen acres in meadow thereto adjoining; over the Great River in breadth forty rods & in length three miles (annotated "sold to Stephen Taylor"); eight acres "at Podanke in meadow with an addition of swamp" (annotated "sold to Thomas Ford"); nine acres "by the brickills" (annotated "sold to Walter Filer"); sixty acres near Paquannicke; and a parcel both within and without the palisado, abutting on the burial place (annotated "sold to David Wilton") with five acres adjoining thereunto [WiLR 1:18]. In his will, dated 9 September 1649 and proved 15 May 1650, "Mr. William Hill" bequeathed to "my beloved wife Sarah the third part of my estate"; to "my eldest daughter Sarah a silver spoon"; "my estate shall be equally divided amongst my children only my will is that my son William being my eldest son for every two parts the rest of my children have, he shall have three parts"; if any die before marriage, their share to be divided among the rest; William to receive his portion at marriage; "my beloved wife Sarah" executor and power to dispose of £5 where she sees good; "Mr. Jones, Mr. George Hull and Thomas Thornton" overseers [Hartford PD Case #2723]. Thomas Thornton deposed before the court "Mr William Hill sending for me on his deathbed I went to him; being far spent when I came yet of perfect memory and understanding as I judge & acquainted me with his will by word of mouth which was thus, namely that his wife should be executrix and that she should have the thirds of that estate he had left his debts being first paid ... and his wife should have £5 to dispose of, nextly that his eldest daughter Sarah had her portion only he would give her a silver spoon, nextly that the rest of his estate should be equally divided amongst five children William, Josepth, Ignatius, Jeams & Elesibeth only in the division his eldest son William on the division should have one third which words he changed in the writing of his will ..." "The sum of Mr. Hill's goods in Winsor" was prepared on 24 September 1649; the items, mostly debts due to Hill, were not totalled, but did include "land called brick kills," £2, and "Henry Curtis is behind of his rent," £11 19s. 3d. The inventory of the estate of William Hill (at Fairfield) was taken 16 November 1649 and totalled £225 16s. 10d., including real estate valued at £30: "one homelot planted with apple trees," £10; and "his own homelot & other dividends," £20 [Hartford PD Case #2723]. Birth: By about 1594 (based on date of marriage), son of James Hill of Lyme Regis, Dorsetshire [FOOF 1:278-79; TAG 43:16; Waters 70-71]. Death: Fairfield between 9 September 1649 (date of will) and 24 September 1649 (date of inventory at Windsor). Marriage: St. Mary Arches, Exeter, Devonshire, 28 October 1619 Sarah Jourdaine [TAG 43:16]; she married (2) Boston 5 January 1653[/4] Nathaniel Sowther 44] as his second wife; she married (3) after 18 January 1662/3 as his second wife Edmund Greenleaf [TAG 43:17]; she was alive as late as 19 April 1671, but was probably dead by 1 February 1673/4 [TAG 43:17]. Associations: Sarah (Jourdaine) Hill, wife of William Hill, was sister of Mary (Jourdaine) Coggan, wife of JohnCOGGAN of Dorchester and Boston, and of Elizabeth (Jourdaine) Duncan, wife of Nathaniel DUNCAN of Dorchester; the three sisters were daughters of Ignatius Jourdaine of Exeter, Devonshire [TAG 43:14-18]. Comments: In the absence of baptisms, the children are listed here (as they were by Jacobus in FOOF) in the order they are named in their father's will. This arrangement is consistent with what is known of their later lives; also, the three surviving sons were always named in the same order when they appeared in the wills of other relatives. It has been assumed that the first child was born one year after the marriage, and the others at regular two-year intervals thereafter, although this makes Sarah and William older than they would appear to be based on their marital histories. In a letter of 14 March 1632/3, written from Exeter, Devonshire, Henry Paynter wrote to John Winthrop Jr. asking him to take notice of "Mr. Cogan and Mr. Hill and Mr. Pinny our pious and loving neighbors and good friends that now come unto you" [WP 3:109]. These would be JohnCOGGAN, William Hill and HUMPHREY PINNEY, who arrived in 1633 on the unnamed Weymouth ship [GMN 3:10]. The "Sarah Hill" on the passenger list of the Recovery in 1634 was the wife of this William Hill, perhaps accompanied by some or all of the children [NGSQ 71:171, 77:250]. On 2 September 1641 "Mr. Hill" stood bond for JohnCOGGAN when MATTHEW ALLYN successfully sued him for slander [RPCC 15, 16]. In May 1656 "Mr. Hill" was called upon to make a distribution of the estate of William Cross [RPCC 163, 166]. He acted in a similar capacity for the estate of Henry Whelpley in 1662 [RPCC 250]. On 5 March 1639/40 "Mr. Hill" was one of those who subscribed to the papers regarding the estate of the children of Thomas Newberry [RPCC 9]. As attorney for Lawrence Ellison he successfully sued Thomas Marshfield at court on 1 June 1643 [RPCC 21]."

"JOSEPH1 LOOMIS (JOHNA LUMACE, JOHNB LUMMYS, THOMASC) was born by 1590, perhaps in Braintree, county Lincoln, England, and died 25 November 1658 at Windsor, CT. He was the son of JOHNA LUMACE, a tailor of Thaxted and Braintree and AGNESA LINGWOOD and JANE MARLAN?, daughter of WILLIAMB and MARGARETA (PERYE) MARLAN? of Braintree. He was also the grandson of JOHNB LUMMYS, a carpenter of Thaxted, and Kryster [sic: Krysten] (Christian (___). JOSEPH1 married 30 June 1616 at Messing, county Essex, England, MARY1 WHITE, daughter of ROBERTA, a wealthy yeoman, and BRIDGETA (ALLGAR) WHITE of Shalford, county Essex. MARY1 was baptized 24 August 1590 at Shalford and died 23 August 1652 at Windsor. MARY1's younger sister, ANNA1, married ancestor JOHN1 PORTER.
United States President Ulysses Simpson Grant (18th Chief Executive), Stephen Grover Cleveland (22nd and 24th), and Gerald Rudolph Ford, (38th), were descendants of MARY1's parents and Millard Fillmore (13th President), of her and her parents.
JOSEPH1 was a woolen draper, He and his wife lived in Braintree until 1628. They moved to London and from there sailed with their eight children 11 April 1638 aboard the "Susan and Ellen", the same ship that ancestor Rev. PETER1 BULKELEY had taken in 1635. The LOOMIS family arrived in Boston 11 July 1638, they may have spent their first year in Dorchester, MA, but moved by land in the summer of 1639 to Windsor, CT, "Probably in the company of Reverend Ephraim Huet who arrived there August 17, 1639" (ref. 3). "On 2 Feb. 1640 he had granted to him 21 acres on the west side of the Connecticut River adjoining the Farmington River" (ref. 6). JOSEPH1 continued to acquire land and served on juries in 1642 and in 1644 with Nathaniel1 Foote, brother of ancestor MARYA FOOTE. "On 6 January 1650, he was sued by" [ancestor WILLIAM1 BUELL] "for trespass and for damage to the extent of seven bushels of corn; one may infer that his stock got away from him" (ref. 3).
JOSEPH1 apparently left no will. His estate was valued at 178 pounds 10 shillings, with "a 'debt in England'" (ref. 3) of 12 pounds 14 shillings 6 pence against it. On December 1658, his wife having predeceased him, his five sons and three daughters (two represented by their husbands) signed an agreement in place of a will to divide JOSEPH's estate equitably among them.
The children of JOSEPH1 and MARY1 (WHITE) LOOMIS, all probably born in Braintree, county Lancaster, England, and probably not all listed in the correct order of birth, were.
