Samuel Barber married (1) Mary Coggens, Dec. 1, 1670. They had Thomas, born Oct. 7, 1671, who died Oct. 1673, and Samuel, born Jan. 26, 1673. Mary, wife of Samuel, died May 19, 1676. 3. FHL book 929.273 B233bd, "The Connecticut Barbers, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Barber of Windsor, Connecticut," 2nd Ed., Donald S. Barber, p. 6-8: "Samuel, bapt. 1 Oct 1648 at Windsor, d. there 12 Mar 1708.9; md. (1) Mary Coggin, b. Taunton, MA abt. 1647, d. Windsor 19 May 1676, dau. of Thomas and Joan (___) Coggin, and sister of Bathsheba who m. Samuel's brother John Barber. Samuel md. (2) Ruth Drake, b. 1 Dec 1657, d. Windsor 13 Nov 1731, dau. of John and Hannah (Moore) Drake. After his parents' death just after his 14th birthday, Samuel was placed (4 Feb 1662) in the home of his brother Thomas until age 21. At about the time of his marriage, Samuel apparently went with his brother to Simsbury, but must have returned to Windsor soon, because all of his family's vital records were recorded in Windsor. He lived in a house on the original Barber tract, nearly opposite the Windsor Cannery on Poquonock Ave. This house was first occupied by his brother John, but was transferred to Samuel when John moved to Springfield. Children of Samuel and Mary, born in Windsor:
      a. Thomas, b. 7 Oct 1671, bur. 31 Oct 1673.
      b. Samuel, b. 26 Jan 1673/4, d. Windsor 1 Feb 1722/3, m. (1) Hepzibah 'Ziba' Brown, b. Windsor 19 Nov 1664, d. 20 Dec 1711, dau. of Peter and Mary (Gillett) Brown. Samuel m. (2) Windsor 18 Jun 1713, Martha Ponder of Westfield, MA, b. 1677/8, d. Windsor (Bloomfield Church rec.) 6 Aug 1758. Samuel lived in Poquonock (in the northwest part of Windsor), one mile north of the Baptist Meeting House. [9 children listed for this couple.]
Children of Samuel and Ruth born at Windsor:
      a. John Drake, b. ??25 Jan 1676/7, died young. This birth date is probably incorrect since it is the same as the marriage date of Ruth to Samuel. Probably John Drake was born a bit later, and was the first child of Ruth, and was named for her father John Drake.
      b. William, b. 1678, m. Esther Brown.
      c. Mary 'Mercy', b. 1680, d. 27 Aug 1719, m. Windsor 22 Jul 1696 Peter Brown, b. Windsor 12 Mar 1666/7, d. there 6 Mar 1739, son of Peter and Mary (Gillette) Brown; res. Windsor. Mary died on the day her twins were born. Peter was perhaps a grandson of Peter Brown of Plymouth, MA, and of the Mayflower; however, the Mayflower Society thinks there is not enough proof to allow this connection, and will not allow this to be a valid connection. [7 children of this couple listed.]
      d. Hannah, b. 4 Oct 1681, d. before 1708.
      e. Joseph, b. 1681, m. (1) Hannah ___, m. (2) Mary Loomis.
      f. Ruth, b. 24 Jul 1683, d. 2 Aug 1747, m. Windsor 18 Apr 1706 William Phelps, b. 4 Feb 1668/9, d. 1733, son of Timothy and Mary (Griswold) Phelps, res. Windsor. [Lists 3 children for this couple.]
      g. David, b. 12 May 1686, m. Hannah Post.
      h. Benjamin, b. abt 1690, m. Hannah Lewis.
      i. Elizabeth, b. abt. 1690 (Barbour Index states 9 Feb 1684/5), m. Windsor 10 Nov 1709 Daniel Loomis, b. 15 Nov 1682, d. 1754, son of Daniel and Mary (Ellsworth) Loomis. Eliza. and Daniel lived 2 1/2 miles south of Windsor Center which would place them in the Deerfield section of present day Windsor. Samuel's will of 21 Feb 1708/9 left 25 pounds each to Elizabeth, Mindwell, and Sarah, when they become 18 years of age. This would mean Elizabeth was born after 1689. [7 children of this couple are detailed.]
      i. Mindwell, b. 3 Dec 1691, d. 3 Dec 1712.
      j. John, b. 1696, m. Jane Alvord.
      k. Sarah, b. Windsor, 28 Aug 1698, d. Westfield, MA, 4 Jan 1741/2, m. (1) Windsor ('both of Windsor') 17 Oct 1717 Stephen Palmer, b. Windsor 20 Jan 1686, d. there 17 Nov 1720, son of Timothy and Hannah (Buel) Palmer. Sarah m. (2) 5 Oct 1729 Isaac Phelps III, b. Westfield, MA, 26 Jan 1692/3, son of Isaac and Mary (Maudsly) Phelps. Sarah lived in Poquonock with her first husband Stephen, and at Westfield with Isaac. [9 children detailed of Sarah and Stephen.]"

      4. FHL book 929.273 B233w, "Descendants of Thomas Barber of Windsor, Connecticut, 1614-1909," John Barber White:
Pp. 15-19: "The Hartford Probate Records contain the following regarding the settlement of Thomas Barber's estate: 'Barber, Thomas, Windsor, Invt. ₤132-14-00; taken 10, Oct. 1662, by Benj. Newberry and John Moore. 'Court Record, Page 187 - 4 Feb., 1662-3, Invt approved. Samuel was placed with his brother Thomas Barber to learn a trade; Mercy (Mary) Barber was placed with Lt. Walter Fyler and his wife until 18 years of age, unless she marries before, with her Master's and Dame's and eldest brother's approbation; Josias Barber was placed with Dea. John Moore until 21 years of age to learn a trade; Thomas Barber doth engage to take Samuel Barber's portion and after two years from the present to allow 6% simple interest per annum. John Barber took Josias' portion upon the same terms. Page 188 - 6 Jun 1662, Dist. to John and Sarah jointly. House and Home lot as their Father willed - 126-13-04. To Thomas Barber by Gift & his portion - 13-00-00. To Samuel, Mercy & Josias each - 36-15-00. By Capt Newberry, Deacon Moore, Sgt. Alvord.' He died on Sept. 11th, and his wife Joan on Sept. 10th, 1662. Children: John, bp. 24 Jul 1642; Thomas, b. 14 Jul 1644; Sarah, bp. 19 Jul 1646; Samuel, bp. 1 Oct 1648; Mary, bp. 12 Oct 1651; Josiah, b. 15 Feb 1653. In the Hartford Probate records it will be observed that the name of the fifth child of Thomas and Joan Barber is given as Mercy instead of Mary, as shown above. Also some records seem to indicate that she married a Hale, but the Gillett family records furnish conclusive evidence of her marriage to John Gillett. It is possible that in the records showing the name of Hale, her marriage was confused with that of her sister Sarah's to Timothy Hall, as a confusion of the names Hale and Hall is quite common."
Pp. 23-29: "Samuel Barber, bp. Oct. 1, 1648; m. 1st, Dec. 1, 1670, Mary Coggins, who d. May 19, 1676. He m. 2nd, Jan. 25, 1677, Ruth Drake, dau. of John and Hannah (Moore) Drake, who was bp. Dec. 6, 1657. John Drake, the father of Ruth, was descended from the illustrious English family of that name, which had its seat at Ashe. In England the name has long been borne by many distinguished as navigators, clergymen, martyrs, and authors. Among the foremost of these English families is that which has its seat at Ashe, Co. Devon and from it descended the greater portion of the Drakes of Massachusetts and Connecticut. (Book has extensive genealogy for Drakes starting from John of Exmouth of 1360 to Ruth's parents John, b. about 1635 [who] m. Hannah, dau. of Thomas Moore.] Children, by the first marriage; born at Windsor:
      a. Thomas, b. 7 Oct 1671, bur. 31 Oct 1673.
      b. Samuel, b. 26 Jan 1673; d. Windsor 1 Feb 1722/3, m. Martha Ponder.
      c. John Drake, probably died young.
      By 2nd marriage:
      a. William, b. 1678, m. Esther Brown.
      b. Hannah, b. 4 Oct 1680-1, probably d. young, as she is not mentioned in either her father's, mother's or sister Mindwell's wills.
      c. Joseph, b. 1681, m. Mary Loomis.
      d. Ruth, b. 24 Jul 1683, m. William Phelps.
      e. Mary.
      f. Elizabeth, b. 9 Feb 1684/5), m. Daniel Loomis.
      g. David, b. 12 May 1686, m. Hannah Post.
      h. Sarah, b. 28 Aug 1688.
      i. Benjamin, b. abt 1690, m. Hannah Lewis.
      j. Mindwell, b. 3 Dec 1691; unmarried.
      k. John, b. probably about 1694, m. Jane Alvord.
The dates of birth of the children of this family, as given by the best authorities, are greatly at variance with the clear and unmistakable evidence contained in the father's will. Stiles' 'Ancient Windsor' gives the birth of a son John, but places him as the son of the first wife. In Samuel Barber's will, dated Feb. 21, 1708-9, it will be observed that he makes provision for his son John when he shall come to the age of 21 years. Now, if this son John had been born in 1676, he would have been at least 32 years old at the time the father's will was written, whereas it is evident from that document that he was the youngest son. Further, John Barber, the son of Samuel, was married in 1717, at which date, had he been born in 1676 he would have been 41 years old, and his wife, Jane Alvord, born in 1698, would have been 21 years younger than he; all of which is, to be sure, a possible situation, but hardly a probable one, in those days of early marriages. The New England Gen. and Hist. Reg., Vol. V, page 64, makes mention of John Drake Barber, son of Samuel and Ruth, b. Jan. 25, 1676. This is the only record found of John Drake Barber. From all this evidence, the conclusion seems inevitable that if there was an older son John, he must have died young; and as to the confusion regarding the date of his birth, it is not improbable that he was the son of the first wife. At all events, the son John who was living at the time of the father's death was a younger Child, and in all probabilities the youngest son, born presumably about 1694. The dates given above as the dates of birth of Elizabeth and Sarah are undoubtedly incorrect, as in his will, their father Samuel provides that they and their sister Mindwell shall be paid ₤25 each when they shall be 18 years of age, so that they must have been under 18 years of age when the father's will was made, and hence born after 1690. Stiles' 'Ancient Windsor' gives Sept. 25, 1704, as the date of birth of the daughter Mary, but in the record of the Brown family, the same authority states that she married Peter Brown in 1696, or eight years before the date of her birth. In the Appendix of the volume mentioned, Dr. Stiles calls attention to this discrepancy. It will be seen, by reference to the wills heretofore mentioned that there was a daughter Mary belonging to this family; that she was married prior to the making of her father's will, in Feb., 1708-9, and in her sister Mindwell's will she is specifically mentioned as the wife of Peter Brown. Hence she was evidently one of the older children. In Samuel Barber's will he makes unconditional bequests to his son Benjamin, which would indicate that he was of age at the time the will was made, and hence must have been born prior to 1690, as given in the above record."

These 140 passengers are generally known as the Dorchester Company, from the place chosen for their settlement, and as they remained a distinct body of colonists, and there are contemporary records to identify most of them, it has been possible to compile a tentative list of those who came on this pioneer ship. Five years later a great majority of them removed to Windsor, Connecticut, under the leadership of Warham.
The following list shows the names of heads of family and the number in each family sailing in this ship. It gives the county of origin and the place of settlement after arrival, with other notes of identification. The list shows that fifteen came from Somerset, fifteen from Dorset, six from Devon and three are of undetermined origin. The total number thus listed makes 134 out of 140 who came over.
[List includes:] John Drake (6). Devon, Removed to Windsor (Stiles)."
