      3. Excerpts from a letter of March 24, 1966 in the Marlette family file at the Montgomery County, NY, Archives addressed to the Archivist:
"...Without a doubt, the Michael Melatt and wife, Margret Frederick, who came here to Monroe co. - are the same, as these you found in the Montgomery Co., Fonda Church Records. Also, probable desc. of the Gideon Merlet, a French Huguenot, who came to New York from Holland in 1662. But we do not have proof of this, yet.
      Will list what we have...

[Reviewed the bound manuscript in the Syracuse Public Library] "Gideon marlett (Gedeon merlet), A Huguenot of Staten island, NY, With some Account of his Decs. in the US and Canada," by Jane Marlette Taft 1662-1907, Burlington, VT, 1907: Michael is not identified.

      4. Montgomery County, NY, Archives, Feb. 4, 1980 letter to Mildred Breiland, excerpt: "New york in the Revolution" by Roberts, page 381 lists a Michael Marlat as an enlisted man, Tryon County Militia, 3rd Regiment." Also notes: ""Gideon Marlette" by Jane marlette Taft, 1907 claims Michael as an unidentified person."

      5. The book "Our Van Horne Kindred," by Elsie O. Hallenback, 1958, copy in the Montgomery County NY Archives:
"Francis Saltz was another early settler along the Schoharie Creek, about five miles above its entrance into the Mohawk River. In heh History of Montgomery County, it states 'that one Francis Saltz and Cornelius (Boss) Putman purchased the Shucksburg Patent of 1200 acres of land along the Schoharie Creek, Mr. Saltz taking the half farthest up the creek, and Mr. Putman the lower half. Mr. Saltz later on sold part of this land to his son-in-law by the name of McCreavy; another part to his son-in-law named Young; another part to Philip Frederick, a fourth part to Michael Marlett and the remaining 200 acres he deeded to Peter Crush [Grosch] if he would marry his crippled daughter who had never been able to walk. Mr. Crush accepted this offer, and after building a home on the land, carried his wife to it on his back.' "

      6. The book "History of Montgomery and Fulton Counties, N.Y.," reprinted 2002 (originally printed in the 1880s): "The Development of Business Centers [in Glen Township]... Mill Point, on Schoharie creek, was another collection of houses, and necessarily a business centre in early times. A German of some means, named Francis Saltz, having settled on the east bank of the creek, about the middle of the last century, joined with one 'Boss' Putman in purchasing the Shucksburg patent of 1200 acres, across the creek in the present town of Glen. Saltz took the half of the patent furthest up stream, from which he sold the site of Mill Point to a son-in-law named McCready. The next farm back of this to another son-in-law, George Young; a third farm to his grandson, Francis Frederick, and a fourth to Michael Marlett, who married Peggy Frederick. The 200 acres remaining Saltz offered to deed to Peter Crush [or Grosch], if the latter would marry his youngest daughter, a cripple, unable to walk. Crush accepted the offer, and having built a house on the tract, carried his wife to it on his back. They spent their days on the place, and left it to their only son, Francis..."

      BIRTH:
      1. Age based on the census above with the ten year spread between 1760 and 1770. This is further refined by that fact he received land of Francis Saltz ca. 1785 or earlier. Assuming a marriage no earlier than age 21, this would put a birth no later than 1765. One entry on the LDS IGI notes birth of 4 Dec 1760 at Mohawk, Herkimer, NY - the location would be wrong since Herkimer didn't exist at that early date and would more likely be Mohawk District (now Florida Twp.) in Albany (now Montgomery Co.). This same IGI reference shows spouse as Marrite Fredrick with a marriage of 27 Aug 1796, which would be too late.

      2. I use this birth data for my database: 5 Nov 2007 Rootsweb Worldconnect database "wolfordsheppard" of Diane Wolford Sheppard shows Michael Marlette b. 19 Jun 1759 in New Jersey to Markes "Mark" Marlet, b. bef 25 Oct 1734 in Somerset Co., NJ, and Sophia Fonteyn, d. 4 Jul 1837 in Monroe Co., NY, m. Margaret Frederick in Tryon County (now Montgomery), NY. She gives her source as "The Merlet, Marlet, Malott, Melott Family Home Page," by Jack MacDonald, 2000, Internet page on Rootsweb. Same database shows several children born to same parents with the last born in Tryon Co. after 1767 meaning the whole family probably moved to NY with Michael as a child.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Their marriage would have to have been before the 1790 census. In the 1790 census they may have had four children. Per the 1830 census, their son Enoch living next to them in Mendon Township, Monroe Co., NY, was born between 1790 and 1800. Their daughter Eva was born 1796. Michael is listed as the recipient of some land from his grandfather-in-law Francis Salts which would have been probably no later than 1785. Assume a marriage of bef 1785.
