    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Reviewed Ancestry.com 23 Nov 2002.

      2. Censuses:
1841 Eng: Heddon-On-The-Wall township, Northumberland, p. 3 of 8, both born in county of Northumberland.
      Thomas Charlton, 73.
      Elizabeth Charlton, 71.

      1851 Eng: Houghton and Closehouse, Heddon-on-the-wall Parish, Northumberland, p. 2 of 10, #8, Houghton:
Thomas Charlton, 55, head, farmer 140 acres employing labourers, b. Heddon-On-The-Wall, Northumberland.
Margaret, 53, wife, b. Newburn, Northumberland.
      Thomas, 18, son, b. Heddon-On-The-Wall, Northumberland.

Thomas, 86, father, b. Newbrough, Northumberland.
Ann Irwing, 23, servant, house servant, b. Whatton, Northumberland.

      3. Online Ordinance Index has the following extracted record (Film printout 6904961, film source 0593804, dates 1775-1838, batch C06481) which gives Elizabeth Charleton, b. 21 Sep 1806 to Thome. Charleton and Elizabeth Ferguson and christened 29 Sep 1806 at St. Thomas Aquino Roman Catholic, Stella, Durham, England. County Durham directly adjoins County Northumberland. There is no Catholic church in Heddon-on-the-Wall and this particular church is just a few miles southeast of Heddon-on-the-Wall. Another child Ann is also christened in the same church per FHL film # 593804. The church records are written in Latin. Each Christening is divided by town location title. Before Ann Carlton is "Heddon-on-the-Wall." The god parent listed for Ann is Maria Lock. Sometimes godparents could be a relative (maybe Maria Ferguson or Maria Charlton?). It is interesting that the Charlton parents are buried in the Established Church of England whereas some of their children were baptized in a Catholic Church.

      4. While researching in England June 2009 at Heddon-on-the-Wall (where I found the tombstone of Thomas Charlton and Elizabeth Ferguson), I met a local resident, Geoffrey Brian Charlton , who is a descendant through John, the son of Thomas. He put me in touch with his brother George Norman Charlton 16, Severn Close, Peterlee, County Durham, England SR81JX. They indicate that John was b. 1811 and md. Mary ___ who was chr. 28 May 1804 at Minsteracres. They had the following children b. about the following dates: George 1846, Elizabeth 1847, John 1848, Margaret 1848, and Annie ??. The information is very sketchy and I have not had any success in finding John in the censuses or anywhere else for that matter. I wrote 30 Aug 2009 for more concrete and detailed information if they have it, but no response - I suspect they do not have much documentation.

      5. From my visit to the Northumberland Records Office at Woodhorn on Jun 2009, I reviewed the following:
      A. Catholic Register Transcripts book (RCT-3) for Minsteracres Roman Catholic Church in Bywell St. Peter which had the following entries for the surname Charlton. The writing is in latin and the first entry is most likely for Thomas, Jr, son of Thomas and Elizabeth; the others have no apparent relation to us:
Pg. 29 or 30: Confirmati ab Minster Acren 1796: Thomas Charlton.
Pg. 31: Confirmati 28 Maii 1804 ab Epicipo Will acanthoniai: John Charlton, Edward Charlton, and Mary Charlton.
Pg. 43: Death: Isabella Charlton d. at Ebchester 21 (or 31?) Jun 1816.
      B. I found the following probate (NRO 672/A/31/28) for Thomas Charlton; however, I cannot link it to our Thomas since the son is born 27 Mar 1754 at Ovingham (per NFS). I do not believe there is any connection, but the information for this probate shows Thomas Charlton of Matfen Moorhouses, will dated 16 Nov 1787, mentions wife Barbara and Children: Thomas, William, Frances (wife of Forster Charlton), Elizabeth (wife of Ralph Davison), Barbara (under 21), and Margaret (under 21). Mentions land in Corbridge. Witnesses: Michael Young and John Weddle.
      C. Of all English counties, the surname Charleton are most prolific in Northumberland and Durham - so it is difficult to make easy matches. The line traces back to the 1200s according to a pedigree which I found in the Northumberland Records Office at Woodhorn; unfortunately, it is too narrow in scope and not helpful. The following is from my Jun 2009 visit to the SOCIETY of GenealogistS, London, England per their book "Northumberland County Wide Anglican Burial Index 1813-1837" (listed by parish register, name, address, age, burial date). Originally it was assumed that perhaps Thomas' father was a Thomas, and so I extracted the following information on potential fathers named Thomas buried in Northumberland with an approximate birthdate of 1745 or earlier (I have since changed my postion per the christening note below believing his father is actually George Charleton of Fourstones):
      "Heddon-on-the-Wall, Thomas Charlton, Heddon, 70, bur. 31 7 1815."
      -Bellingham, Stobilee, 78. 10 Sep 1815.
-Long Benton, George Pit, 83, 23 Dec 1832.
      -Simonburn, Simonburn, 82, 8 Dec 1815.
      -Bellingham, Haltwhistle, 70, 18 Mar 1817.
      -Ovingham, Liker Hall, 80, 19 Feb 1820.
      -Ovingham, Broad Oak, 77, 15 Jan 1822.
      D. NRO 1954:24, 27, 26, 22 - These are records of a local lady who collected Catholic records for early Durham and Northumberland. I found 2 Burnopps and 2 Charlton records, but no link that I can find to our database. The Burnopps mainly had the following names: Ralph and Martin.

      6. Based on the 1851 census where Thomas says he was born in Newbrough, I did the following search and extraction at the FHL of the parish records of Newbrough Chapelry, film 1068609, for Charletons, with no results for our Thomas (I since have decided he was actually born to a father named George in the adjoining hamlet of Fourstones per my comments below in "Christening"):

-Margret, chr. 24 Dec 1780. (Bur. 20 Dec 1793 per note below.)

      7. From a FHL search and extraction of the parish records of Warden, of which Newbrough Chapelry is subservient and very nearby, per film 1068615, for Charletons (note that this Parish was never fully extracted by LDS IGI for the mid to late 1700s and so the following information is not readily seen); the asterisk (*) denotes a known relationship:
      A. Christenings 1724 to 1812 for the following fathers:
      a. Father: William Charlton (there are probably two or more Williams involved due to the proximity of dates for some of the children as well as the 1750 death of Ann, wife to one of the Williams, as well as the marriages of two Williams in 1733 and 1753 as noted below):
-29 Oct 1732, Mary, dau. of Wm. Charlton.

      CHRISTENING:
      1. Finding the christening record of Thomas has been difficult due to the great number of Charltons in Northumberland who originate anciently around Bellingham in Northumberland, which is north of Hexham. The Charlton family manor, called Hesleyside, is in the North River Tyne valley just a short distance west of Bellingham in Bellingham Parish. In fact, the ordinance maps for the area show a hamlet named Charlton just north across the river from the Hesleyside manor. As for the origins of our Thomas Charlton, we do have some clues from the 1841 and 1851 censuses, which report an estimated birth year of 1768 and 1766 respectively. His gravestone at Heddon-on-the-Wall reports an age of 87 at the time of his death in 1853, which calculates to an approximate birth year of 1766. Being that the censuses and gravestone are secondary sources, one would expect some variance in the dates - but an estimated birth year range of 1766-1768 seems reasonable. As for the location, we only have the 1851 census to rely on, which reports Newbrough in Northumberland. Newbrough is a dependent chapelry within the Parish of Warden. I have systematically searched all christening records for Thomas Charlton between 1764-1770 in an expanding circle of up to an approximate ten miles around Newbrough with the following results:
      A. Anglican Church of England records:
Newbrough: None. Note: Newbrough is a dependent chapelry of Warden.
Warden: Thomas Charleton, son of George residing at Fourstones, chr. 11 Jun 1769. Note Fourstones is a hamlet between Newbrough and Warden (about one mile from Newbrough and two miles from Warden).
      Haydon Bridge: None.
      Lee Saint John: None.
      Hexham: None.
Simonburn: Thomas Charlton, son of Thomas and Dorothy, residing at Thorough Gates, chr. 23 Apr 1769. Note: I did not find parents' marriage in the parish nor any death for Thomas, the son, prior to my cut-off at 1800. Also note: high concentration of Charltons.
      Chollerton: None.
      Corbridge: None.
      Halton: None.
Whitley Chapel (by Hexham): None. Note christenings start 1765.
Birtley: None. Note: high concentration of Charltons.
      Thockrington: None.
      Kirkharle: None.
      Allendale: None.
      Haltwhistle: None.
Bellingham: None. Note: high concentration of Charltons.
      Corsenside: None.
      Stamfordham: None.
      Whitfield: None.
Ovingham: None. Note: high concentration of Charltons.
      Slaley: None.
      Bywell-St. Andrew: None.
Bywell-St. Peter (note: I do not find any burials for these Thomases in this parish up to 1800):
-Thomas Charleton, son of John and Isabel, residing at Newton, chr. 25 Apr 1764. (John md. Isabel Atkinson, both of the parish of Bywell, 2 Aug 1759.)
-Thomas Charleton, son of Henry and Eliz., residing at Gallow Hill, chr. 3 Mar 1765. (Henry of Hamsterly Parish md. Elizabeth Bewick of this parish 19 May 1763.)
-Thomas Charlton, son of Michael and Jane, residing at Broomley, chr. 5 Nov 1767.
Heddon on the Wall: None. Note: large concentration of Charltons.
      Kirkwhelpington: None.
      B. Non-conformist churches:
      Stamfordham-Presbyterian: None.
Bellingham-St. Oswald Roman Catholic: Can't search; christenings start 1794.
      Haltwhistle-Presbyterian: None.
Ministeracres-Roman Catholic: None. Note this is the church in which our Thomas had a dau. baptized in 1800. Note also that baptismal records start 1795 and I can't search.
      Kirkwhelpington-Bavington Presbyterian: None.
Bellingham Catholic: Can't search; christenings start 1775.
Stonecroft with Hexham Catholic: Can't search. Note that this church is very near to Newbrough. Baptisms are missing in the mid to late 1760s making a gap.
Stella, County Durham, St. Thomas Aquino Roman Catholic: Can't search; baptisms start 1775. Note that some of Thomas's children were baptized in this church.
Hexham-St. Mary's Catholic: Can't search; records are not consistent until 1775.
      Simonburn-Falstone Presbyterian: None.
As can be seen from the above results, there are only five possible Thomases that work out timewise - one in Warden parish, one in Simonburn parish, and three in Bywell parish. By using the residence locations reported in those five christening records, we can calculate the following distances from Newbrough:
-Fourstones: 3/5 mile. (Just east of Newbrough and on modern maps.)
-Thorough-gates: 5 miles. (This name is not shown on current maps but was found on Google Maps as the name "Throughgates" for a farm near Park End, halfway between Simonburn and Wark.)
-Gallow Hill: 7-3/4 miles. (Located halfway between Corbridge and Aydon.)
-Newton: 10 miles. (On modern maps above Bywell.)
-Broomley: 11 miles. (On modern maps below Bywell.)
Clearly, this only leaves one Thomas that meets the location criterion -- Thomas, son of George, residing at Four Stones, chr. in Warden Parish 11 Jun 1769. As I reviewed some of the old maps in the Family History Library, Newbrough seemed to encompass an administrative area larger than the small existing hamlet of Newbrough encompassing Four Stones as well. Modern satellite imagery on Google shows that there are only two small-sized farm fields between the hamlets of Newbrough and Four Stones. Newbrough did have its own chapel, but it was subservient to the parish church of Warden, which is another 1-3/4 miles southeast of Fourstones. In fact, in the late 1700s and early 1800s, no marriages could be performed in Newbrough since the law required them to be conducted in a parish church. Accepting this premise and logic of time and location, we have eliminated all other possibilities leaving us to accept the Warden parish Thomas Charlton as our Thomas. It should be noted that we cannot prove him 100% without any doubt due to the lack of records available for research. It should also be noted that he did have most of his children baptized in Catholic churches, which as can be seen from the above survey do not generally have baptismal records for the 1760s. On the other hand, his devotion to Catholicism is suspect since he did married his wife Elizabeth Ferguson in the Church of England's parish church of Lee St. John, the next parish 1/2 mile west of Warden just across the North Tyne river; he also was buried in the Church of England's parish churchyard of Heddon-on-the-Wall. I also believe that this linkage has been missed in the past and was made available by my recent find of Thomas' tombstone inscription in Heddon, the use of the British censuses now online, and a physical look at the Warden parish records which have never been extracted by the LDS IGI for the years that concern us.
Until shown otherwise, I propose to follow this Thomas.
For some more information in regards to Four Stones, or Four Stanes as it was anciently known in the local vernacular, there is a article that appeared in the Hexham Courant newspaper 27 Dec 1873 as found on the Internet. It states: "Fourstones is so close to the ancient village of Newbrough, and so much influenced by the poeple of that more push place, that there would have been no store in Fourstones to this day but for the Newbroughians, and so the store is named the Fourstones and Newbrough Industrial Society Limited... Thus Newbrough (which is only three-quarters of mile away) and Fourstones are interdependent upon each other; the Newborugh people co-operate at Fourstones, but in return the Fourstonians depend upon Newbrough for their reading-room and place of worship..."

      CHRISTENING:
      1. From a FHL search and extraction of christenings (1724 to 1812) for the children of George Charleton from the parish records of Warden, of which Newbrough Chapelry is subservient and very nearby, per FHL film 1068615, for Charletons (note that this parish was never fully extracted by LDS IGI for the mid to late 1700s and so the following information is not readily seen):
-5 Feb 1764, Jane Charleton (notes father is of Parkshields).
-11 Jun 1769, Thomas Charleton (notes father is of Fourstones).
-8 Sep 1771, Foster Charleton (notes father is of Fourstones). (Bur. 1772)
-27 Jun 1773, Barbara Charleton (notes father is of Fourstones).
-23 Jun 1776, Anne Charleton (notes father is of Fourstones).
-18 Mar 1779, George and Robert Charleton, twin sons (notes father is of Fourstones).
-4 Apr 1783, Anne Charlton (notes father is of Fourstones).

      MARRIAGE:
      1. LDS IGI extracted record per batch M004191, film 0095002, printout 6902831 shows Thos. Charlton md. Elizabeth Fargison 29 Jun 1795 at Lee Saint John, Northumberland, England. The actual record on FHL film 1068897also shows that both are of the parish and that she is a spinster, that Thos. signs with an X, but Elizabeth signs as Elisabeth Fargison. The record also shows her name as Elisabeth, not Elizabeth. Witnesses signed as follows: Thos. Fenwick and John Ferguson.

      2. Caution! The following entry is not a second marriage for our Thomas even though they were both living in Heddon at the same time. The Thomas belows and Elizabeth Watson are having different children in the Heddon-on-the-Wall area including at least Watson (1794), John (1798), and Elizabeth (1809):
From FHL film 1068615 for Warden Parish: "22 Feb 1794, Thomas Charleton of the parish of Heddon on the Wall in the county of Northumberland and Diocese of Durham and Elizabeth Watson of this Parish were married in this church by license 22 Feb 1794. Thomas Charlton signs his name and bride signs with a mark of X. Witnesses: Matthew Hutchinson and John Watson."

      BURIAL:
      1. During my visit to the area June 2009, I found the following tombstone immediately on left of the walkway leading to the main door of Saint Andrew's Church in Heddon-on-the-Wall. This is the local Anglican church. The tombstone reads as follows:
"The Burial Place of Thomas & Elizabeth Charlton of Heddon-on-the-Wall.
Elizabeth, Daughter of Thomas Charlton, Jun'r, who died January 5th 1836 Aged 12 years.
The above Thomas Charlton died Jan. 10th 1853 Aged 87 years.
The above Eliz'th Charlton died June 1st, 1846. Aged 72 years.
Also the above Thomas Charlton Jun'r died March 25th, 1852, Aged 56 years.
Thomas Charlton grandson of the above died Jan'y 21st 1874 Aged 45 years.
Margaret Charlton, widow of Thomas Charlton, Jun'r died August 20th, 1875 Aged 77 years."

      2. There were three other Charlton tombstones that I transcribed in the Heddon-on-the-Wall cemetery. I have checked them against New Family Search, censuses, and other Internet-based databases and concluded that there is no family relationship. Please note that this part of England has hundreds of Charltons. Charltons are found in quantity in every parish. I have entered the tombstone information into New Family Search 1 Aug 2009. The gravestones were for:
William (d. 5 Jun 1884), his wife Mary (d. 30 Jan 1875), and many of their children.
      James (d. 29 Jul 1851) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 23 Aug 1875).
Watson (d. 5 May 1855), his wife Ann (d. 10 Dec 1864), and some of their children.
