    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Reviewed Ancestry.com 23 Nov 2002.

      2. The following is an extraction of all parish records for 1695-1724 for surname Oliver from Newbrough (N) or Warden (W) from a transcription book at the Society of Genealogists in London per my visit there Jun 2009. Newbrough was a "chapelry" subservient to Warden and so members may be found in either. We know Mary's marriage record in Warden mentions she is of "Newbrough Chapelry." The following entries are too early to make the connection to our Mary without some additional research in the intervening years in the Warden Parish between 1724 and Mary's supposed birth of 1781 (the records for Newbrough for the intervening years are transcribed in a separate note below with no Mary Oliver shown in the christenings):
N, bapt. 7 Oct 1709, Richard Oliver, s. of Andrew of Newbrough.
W, born 4 Aug 1705, Isabell Oliver, d. of Andrew.
N, bur. 21 Sep 1699, Jo. Elliot Oliver, s. of Andrew of Newbrough.
N, bur. 29 Jun 1700, Ann Oliver, d. of Andrew of Newbrough.
N, mar. 29 May 1707, Tho. Robison of Haltwhistle and Ann Oliver of the Bush.
W, bapt. 8 Nov 1696, Mary Oliver, d. of Andrew of Warden (Fourstones).
W, bapt. 2 Apr 1700, Katherin Oliver, d. of Andrew of Fourstones.
W, bapt. 12 Jun 1698, Thos. Oliver, s. of Andrew of Fourstones.
W, bapt. 17 Jan 1703, Phillis Oliver, d. of Andrew of Fourstones.
W, bapt. 19 Aug 1705, Isabell Oliver, d. of Andrew of Fourstones.
W, mar. 11 Nov 1695, Andrew Oliver and Mary Taylor.
W, mar. 2 Nov 1708, Andrew Oliver and Grace Frazier.

3.The following is an extraction of parish records for 1695-1980 for surname Oliver from the Newbrough (N) church from a transcription book at the Society of Genealogists in London per my visit there Jun 2009. I cut off my transcription at the year 1825. Note that no marriages were performed in Newbrough from 1754 to 1869 due to its status as a chapelry, so a review of Warden needs to be made for marriages plus other entries of those in Newbrough who went to Warden for these events. Those names already mentioned in the note above are included plus the following:
Born 19 Oct 1755, John Oliver, s. of Joseph.
Married 10 May 1752, Joseph Oliver and Elizabeth Charlton.
Married 24 Nov 1737, Joseph Oliver and Mary Stobbart.
Married 9 Feb 1737/8, William Dodd and Elizabeth Oliver.
Buried 16 Oct 1764, Josh Oliver of Newbrough.
Buried 18 Jan 1746/7, Mary Oliver, wife of Joseph Oliver.

      4. FHL film 2193232, Warden Parish Easter Rate books, has a subsection for Woodhall Mill for the years 1773-1778 with 4-6 families; however, there is no Burnhopes listed. There is, however, a William Oliver - could he be some relation of Mary Oliver since she eventually marries a Burnhope - definitely a very long shot?

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. From my transcription of William and Mary's children of the Hexham Christening Records (Isaac does not occur):
-3 Feb 1811, Joseph Burnhope, son of William, Woodman of Fellside.
-5 Dec 1813, Jane Burnhope, dau. of William, woodman, and Mary of Fellside.
-12 Jan 1817, Mary Burnhope, dau. of William, woodman, and Mary of Fellside.
-6 Sep 1818, Elizabeth Burnhope, dau. of William, woodkeeper and Mary of Woodside.
-30 Dec 1821, William Burnhope, son of William, woodman of Sunnyside.
-29 Jun 1823, Ann Burnhope, dau. of William, woodkeeper, and Mary of Sunnyside.

      CHRISTENINGS:
      1. No record found in Warden parish per transcription book for the years 1695-1987 reviewed at the Hexham Public Library Jun 2009. Also reviewed the actual Warden records film at the FHL library which confirms the same. Per notes above, she is not in Newbrough even though marriage record notes she is from Newbrough and burial record gives age, which calculates a birth in 1781.

      2. The following are the results of area-wide search of parish records using Newbrough as the nucleus of an approximate 10-15 mile radius with the parameter of Mary Oliver christening five years either side of 1781. There are only a total of four potential candidates: Mary (1777 - Haltwhistle), Mary (1786 - Heddon on the Wall), Mary (1783-Newburn), and Mary (1782 - Lee St. John). Upon first glance, the last entry appears the most likely for two reasons: (1) it is the closest datewise; and (2) our Mary was both married and buried in the Warden Parish, which is literally across the river from Lee St. John with the actual churches being only about a mile apart. Newbrough is a subservient chapelry within the Warden parish again making it somewhat close to the hamlet of Fallowfield where this last Mary was born (Fallowfield is about 2.5 miles to Newbrough and 1 mile to the church of St. John Lee.) Upon further review in depth of the last option, it does not hold up for the following reasons:
-There is a marriage record in Saint John Lee (FHL film 95002) showing "David Elrington, batchelor, and Mary Oliver, spinster, both of the parish, md. 28 May 1806 by banns, with witnesses: William Fenwith and John Walker." Both the names David Elrington and Mary Oliver are rare in this parish with his name only occurring for this marriage and the birth of the two boys noted next; her name only occurs for the one christening we are discussing plus this marriage.
-At least two children are christened in the parish with the father noted as David Elrington (residing at Anick with no mother's name listed): Robert, chr. 3 Aug 1806, and Adam, chr. 11 Jun 1809. I believe the name is significant since Mary's father was Adam Oliver, a name very rare and easily traceable as belonging to one man in the parish.
-We have proof that Mary was the wife and mother by using the 1851 census for West Acomb township in Simonburn (actually in St. John Lee Parish) which shows David Elrington, b. abt 1777 in Simonburn, his wife Mary, b. abt 1781 in Simonburn, and a couple of sons including Adam, b. abt 1810 in St. John Lee. Simonburn is not precise but close enough considering the large variance usually found in these censuses and the fact that it may actually be accurate civilly even though not ecclesiastically. The presence of Adam and the birth year of abt 1781 for Mary definitely ties this back to Mary Oliver. Note that in the 1861 census, David is a widower showing Wark as his birthplace; Mary is deceased, but I did not find her burial record in the Saint John Lee parish records from 1851 to 1861 (may be buried in different parish).
In short, we have no choice but to abandon our fourth option of the Mary from St. John Lee, which initially appeared the best. (I had pursued this option and collected some notes on Adam Oliver which I include for future researchers as a postscript at the end of this note.)

Postscript with some information on Adam Oliver, who we no longer consider a viable father to our Mary Oliver per my discussion above:
      A. Adam shows up as a witness in the following marriages of his two daughters per FHL film 1068897 marriage records of Saint John Lee: -
-Lancelot Robson, of the Chapelry of Bingfield, and Dorothy Oliver, of the Chapelry of St. Oswald, m. 8 Dec 1793, by banns, witnesses: Adam Oliver and James Oliver.
-Joseph Bennet, batchelor and Margaret Oliver, both of the parish, md. 22 Nov 1795, by banns, he signs his name and she signs by mark, witnesses are James Oliver and Adam Oliver. [James could be a brother of Adam.]
