      6. Donald Q. Cannon, "Far West Record, Minutes of the Ch. of Jesus Christ of LDS, 1830-1844" has biography Gideon Haden Carter who was an uncle: "...(1798-1838) was born in Killingworth, Connecticut, and was baptized in 1831 and served a mission to Vermont in 1832. He was killed in 1838 at the Battle of Crooked River in Ray county, MO." Also listed is a brother of this same man: Jared Carter (1801-ca.1849) who was baptized at same time and was on high council in Kirtland and Far West before his disafection in 1838. Also listed is Simeon Dagger Carter (1794-1869) of same birthplace and was a member of High Council in Clay County and Far West, MO; died in Brigham City. All three of these men were brothers. Simeon was the father of Eveline Carter who married Stephen Hales, Jr. They also had a brother John who died in Zion's Camp 25 Jun 1834, a sister Susannah Abigail who died in Nauvoo, another brother Jerusha who died in Salt Lake City 17 Apr 1871, and a sister Prudence who was the mother of Gideon Hayden Carter Gibbs who married Mary Elizabeth Frederick, the daughter of David Frederick.

      7. The book "Mormon Redress Petitions, Documents of the 1833-1838 Missouri Conflict," edited by Clark V. Johnson, contains a copy of the "Scroll Petition" dated 28 Nov 1843 at Nauvoo, IL addressed to the U.S. Congress by members of the LDS Church who had property destroyed by Missouri mobs in the 1830's. Included with over a couple thousand signatures are those of Stephen Hales, Jr. and "Ecerline" Hales. Separately on the same list are her parents Simeon and Lydia Carter.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Ancestral File reports place of marriage as Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. Some family group sheets indicate place of marriage as Quincy, Adams, Illinois but I find no proof of such.

      2. "Compilation of Marriages," Lyndon W. Cook, Provo, Utah, July 1980: "Stephen Hale[s. Jr.] and Eveline Carter, both of Nauvoo, 16 Oct 1842, by Perregrine Sessions ('The Wasp'[Nauvoo newspaper], 22 Oct 1842 and 'A Record of Marriages in the City of Nauvoo, located at the Historical Dept. of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints')."

      3. Per obituary.

      4. Ancestry.com's "Marriages in the Nauvoo Region, 1839-1845," by Susan Easton Black, 1981, has a compilation using modern vital data collected from other third party sources for each of the spouses. The marriage source is not given and the author summarizes the marriage as: Stephen Hale, Jr. and Eveline Lydia Carter, m. 16 Oct 1842, no location given.

      OBITUARY:
      1. "Lydia Eveline Carter Hales. Died at Bountiful, Utah, Aug. 18, 1898 of dysentery and old age. Mrs. Lydia Evelina Carter Hales, wife of Stephen Hales, who has been a widow for 17 years. Her husband died in Salt Lake City in 1881. Mrs. Lydia Eveline Carter Hales was a native of Vermont. When a child of ten [unclear] years at her father's house in the town of Benson, Rutland Co., Vermont, Parley P. Pratt came into the town preaching the doctine of Jesus Christ. At that time her father, Simeon Carter, was a Methodist preacher, and could quote the Bible with great facility. Elder Pratt was not long in convincing Mr. Carter that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the one he was looking for. At that time the Saints were gathering at Nauvoo, Mr. Carter with wife, one son, and Lydia Evelina, moved to Nauvoo. Lydia grew in womanhood, and was married to Stephen Hales October 16th, 1842 by P.G. Sessions. They built themselves a comfortable home but did not enjoy it long, as a mob drove the Saints out from Nauvoo. They then started for Utah; got as far as Iowa and on account of sickness did not leave for two years, arriving in Utah in the fall of 1851. They stayed in Salt Lake City until 1868, when they moved to Bountiful, where Mrs. Hales has lived up to the time of her death. Mrs. Hales has lived a quiet life and leaves numerous relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She died a faithful member in the Church. Funeral services will be held in South Bountiful meeting house on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Aug 21st. Relatives and friends are all invited. S. Hales." Deseret Evening News, Sat., 20 Aug 1898.
