2. Ancestry.com 18 Oct 2002 database: ":2189391" of Steve Primm notes Nathaniel is named as husband of Lydia Brown in her father Roger Brown's 1818 Laurens, SC will. Also notes he with wife and family are in the Rutherford Co. 1820 census. Steve lists 3 children with no further information than names only: Jesse, Martin, and Greenberry Ashley. Steve's database has a lot of information on Nathaniel's parents and siblings with ties to Laurens Co. In an 21 Oct 2002 email from him, he has no copy of the will but he recalls having seen it at one time and he cannot recall if it listed names or was just an estate settlement. He indicates it is listed in the general Davidson County Will and Estate Index and that Nath. was listed in the Rutherford County 1820 census (perhaps the Murfreesboro area about 10 miles from Nashville, TN). [Kerry's note: Rutherford 1820 appears erroneous; however, he does appear in Davidson Co. in 1820 census as noted below.]
3. Received 16 Jun 2003 email from Mary Dugan . She appears to be descended from a daughter of Nathaniel named Sarah for whom she has record of Nathaniel signing the marriage bond with John Claridge in 1816. She has no specific proof otherwise that Sarah was Nathaniel's daughter. She also suspects Nathaniel may have been born 1773 instead of 1784 but has no proof. She says Nathaniel and Claridges very close to each other in the 1820 Davidson County, TN, census and that there were more children of Nathaniel than just the three boys. She says, "Grandpa Claridge was a minister of the Gospel and performed ceremonies for one or two of them." She is going to also send me copies of Nathaniel's estate sale in 1827. She is the 4th gr.-granddaughter of John and Sarah Claridge.
4. Per Terry Smith Worldconnect database "tsmith" 20 Sep 2005 (which several other Worldconnect databases also state): Father of Nathaniel is John Ashley also known as Papa John Ashley, b. 25 Jan 1752 in Anson Co., North Carolina; d. 13 Dec 1852 in Beech Grove, Coffee, Tennessee; Burial: Manley Cemetery, Coffee, Tennessee. In his notes, he quotes ashleybvm@netptc.net per email of 18 May 2003 in which B. Ashley made the following statements: 'I have checked out the recent information on Rootsweb concerning my ancestor, Papa John Ashley, born 1782, NC, died 1852 Coffee Co., TN. So much of it is in error. My documentation for this information is solid. Our cousin, Edward Garrett, in his Garrett book gave erroneous information about this husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" Garrett, and I have a letter from him stating that he did not check the accuracy of erroneous information handed down to him from records of Corinne Mehringer (descendant of one of the Ashley daughters). Papa John Ashley was born 1752 NC according to the US census of 1850 when he was living in Coffee Co., TN at the home of his son James Ashley. In 1852 John was 98 years old. I have all the census records of Papa John and also church records when he joined the church of his son James about 1836. But he was back in KY in 1840. John had deeded his land in Laurens Co., SC to his youngest son Williamson in 1830 when he was intending to move west with his other sons. That is the record Garrett used to explain the death of John. In 1840 he is found on the census report in Livingston Co., KY living with son Williamson. Other sons lived in Livingston, but son Thomas had been ill and had died in the late 1830s. Besides Williamson, Edward lived there too as well as descendants of Edward Ashley. Papa John Ashley died 1852 at the age of 100 and was buried in Coffee Co. TN. Mrs. Mehringer, being a DAR person, had markers placed in the Warrior Creek Cemetery, Laurens Co., SC for both Elizabeth and John. We do not know for sure where Elizabeth died, but at any rate, Papa John came on to TN and is buried there."
