    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Censuses:
1880 US: Cannot find in 1880 US Census which shows her husband and his other wife. Maybe they were keeping Mary a secret since the federal officials were so anti-polygamous at this time.

1900 US: Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, Roll 1684, Book 2, p. 58a, ED 32, 3rd Ward:
Gideon Gibbs, head, b. Jul 1821, 78, married 55 years, VT VT VT.
Eliza A. Gibbs, wife, b. May 1824, 76, married 55 years, 0 total children with 0 living, NY NY NY.
Mary E. Gibbs, plural wife, b. Aug 1838, married 44 years, 7 total children with 4 living, NY CT CT.
Sarah A. Gibbs, dau., b. May 1860, 40, single, UT VT NY.

      2. Family descendants of Mary list her middle name as Ellen and not Elizabeth.

      3. Mary's daughter, Sarah Gibbs, age 22, received the following letter from Daniel Tyler and Ruth Welton Tyler in 1882 in behalf of her grandfather David Frederick (copy on file with me): "Miss Sarah Gibbs. Salt Lake City, U.T. Yours of Nov. 13th duly received; pardon my delay on answering. In reply I will say your grandpa is in Beaver and visits at our house frequently

      4. Compiler Kate B. Carter, "Treasures of Pioneer History" (1953, Dau. of Utah Pioneers, SLC, UT), Vol. 2, pp.213-247, gives autobiography and diary of Eliza Marie Partridge (Smith) Lyman. See file for entire diary which is very interesting and indicative of this period. She was married, as a plural wife, 8 Mar 1843 to the Prophet Joseph Smith by Apostle Heber C. Kimball and two months later on 11 May 1843 the ceremony was repeated in the presence of Emma Smith, the Prophet's first wife. After the death of Joseph, Eliza was married to Apostle Amasa M. Lyman, by whom she had 5 children. She came to Utah in 1848. Her diary in Salt Lake City has several references to David Frederick and one specifically to Mary as follows: "12 Feb 1856: "Called on Mary Frederic with Br. Lyman." [Judging from timing of Battalion Ball and there being limited Fredericks in Utah, this is most likely Mary Frederick who is David's 2nd dau. of his first marriage and who was in SLC by at least 1852 according to her patriarchal blessing.  She would still have her maiden name since her marriage to Gideon Gibbs would not be until later that November.]

      5. Patriarchal blessing per transcript copy from Daisy Van Wagoner, Salt Lake City, 11 Oct 1852: "A blessing by John Smith Patriarch upon the head of Mary Frederick, daughter of David and Mary born Orleans Co., N.Y. 21 Aug 1830. Sister Mary, beloved of the Lord, I place my hands upon thy head in the name of Jesus of Nazareth and place upon you the blessing of a father. The blessings of the new and everlasting covenant the Lord is well pleased with the integrity of thine heart. He will give you every blessing which your heart desires. He will remove from you the deafness with which you are troubled and cause you to hear clearly. I rebuke the ___ that rests upon you that abstracts your hearing in the name of Jesus Christ and I pray my Heavenly Father to bless you according to the desires of your heart. You shall have a companion after the desire of your own heart. He shall fear the Lord and do his will. You shall have a posterity and they shall bear your name in honorable remembrance though all your generations. You shall have faith to do any work that will be necessary for the health of your family and be satisfied with the wishes of the Earth and enjoy the riches of eternal life with all your father's house [ends at the bottom of a page and appears that a second page may follow but not included with copy.]

      6. The book "Mormon Midwife, the 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions," Donna Toland Smart, editor, has several passing references to Mary and the birth of her children:
17 May 1860 US: "Put Mary Gibs to bed with a son born 3 PM." Footnote no. 86: "Gideon Hayden Carter Gibbs (1821-1901) and Mary Ellen (or Elizabeth) Frederick (1830-1907) had a daughter, Sarah Ann (Sadie), on 17 May 1860. The text almost looks as if Patty has written 'dauter' over the word 'son.'
14 Nov 1861: "Finished Br Gibs mittins."
28 Dec 1861: "I was called to Br Gideon Gibs & wife mary put her to bed with a daughter [Mary Isabella] born 10 minutes to 9 PM."
24 Aug 1862: "I went to sister Gibs to a quilting."
28 Aug 1862: "I went and paid my taxes then helped her quilt again."
11 Sep 1862: "Br Gibs works on the house."
27 Sep 1862: "Went to a quilting at Br Gibs."
28 Sep 1862: "Went again helped her quilt."
26 Dec 1862: "Bartl and I went to se Br Gibs he has been sick a long [time]."
24 Nov 1864: "Put Mary Gibs to bed with a son born 4 AM."

      7. Listed as a pioneer in the Heber C. Kimball Company of 1848 as Mary E. Frederick, female, age 17. No mention of her uncle John Evarts in the company of 662 individuals. They departed from Winter Quarters 7 June 1848 and arrived in Salt Lake Valley 24 Sep 1848. Her uncle is listed as John Everett, age 44, with his wife Sarah Ann, age 36, in the David Spencer/Peregrine Sessions Company which left Winter Quarters 18 Jun 1847 with 185 individuals and arrived in Salt Lake Valley 24-25 Sep 1847 per the source of the Journal of History, 21 Jun 1847, p. 8. The niece and uncle evidently did not travel the same year nor same company.

      BIRTH:
      1. Place per marriage sealing ordinance index as Perry, Orleans, NY. Alternate birthplace also reported as Barre, Orleans, New York. Obituary says Berry, Orleans County. I find no Berry and Perry is in Wyoming County, New York. I judge Barre to be correct since it does occur in Orleans County of which county all of the sources agree including her own patriarchal blessing; also Barre sounds like Berry.

      2. Date per website for Utah State Historical Society Cemeteries Database; 8 Jan 2002: 0/0/1831.

      3. Obituary states 21 Aug 1830.

Same source also gives the parentage of Sarah Ann Evarts who married John Evarts, the brother to our Mary: Sarah Ann was the daughter of John Evarts and Polly Law. She was b. June 3, 1811:
"John Evarts, b. 13 Aug 1789 died 21 Apr 1832; married Polly Law, 10 Mar 1810, who died 14 Oct 1832. Children; All these were born in Richmond, Mass.:

Same source further details the family of John Evarts and Sarah Ann Evarts:
"Sarah Ann Evarts. Born in Richmond, Mass., Jan. 3, 1811; married John Evarts at New Lebanon, June 9, 1831. John and Sarah Ann joined the Mormons; they were among those that journeyed from Nauvoo, enduring many hardships along the way. They finally located at Salt Lake, Utah. John died at Centerville, Utah, Sept. 9, 1874. Sarah died a few years earlier. No children."
Same source further details Polly's [Mary] family:
"Polly Evarts. Born in New Lebanon, N.Y., Sept. 21, 1801; married David Fredericks, Jan. 16, 1825; died Oct. 2, 1837, at Farmington, Mich. Children:

      OBITUARY:
      1. "Another Pioneer Called. Mrs. Mary E. Gibbs Enters into Her Reward After Long Illness. The ranks of Utah's early pioneers are thinning fast, scarcely a day going by but the departure for the other world of one of more of them is announced. This morning at 8 o'clock occurred the demise of Mrs. Mary E. Gibbs, a resident of Salt Lake since 1848. The end came after three months of intense suffering from stomach derangement, a disease that she had been more or less subject to for a period of thirty-five years. Mrs. Gibbs was a native of New York, born in Berry, Orleans county, Aug. 21, 1830. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. David Frederick, the mother dying when the child was six years of age. Nine years later, Mary became a Latter-day Saint, being baptized May 24, 1845. Her father was also a member of the Church, and he enlisted in the Mormon battalion. The daughter arrived in Salt Lake valley in September, 1848. In 1857 she became the wife of Gideon H.C. Gibbs, who has been dead a number of years. Of the union there are four surviving children, namely, Mrs. Thomas Morris, Sarah A., Gideon A. and John E. Gibbs. Mrs. Gibbs was a true and faithful woman as wife, mother and Church member, and she was much beloved by a wide circle of friends by whom she was known as 'Aunt Mary.' The funeral will be held from the Sixteenth ward meetinghouse, Wednesday, Jan. 16, commencing at 1 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend the services and may view the remains at the residence, 128 north Fourth West street, from 11 to 12 a.m., Wednesday." Deseret Evening News, Mon., 14 Jan 1907, p. 5.
