MY MOM TOLD ME THAT SPRUNK WAS INDIAN, AND PEARL WAS FULL BLOODED INDIAN, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND. IT WAS EVIDENT IN HER CHILDREN AS WELL THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, ALL HAD A DARK COMPLETION, AND THE GIRLS HAD HIGH CHEEK BONES. I GUESS I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE SLAVIC, SINCE THEY WERE CATHOLIC, VICE INDIAN. WAS A HOMEMAKER ALL HER LIFE. ENJOYED GARDENING, AND CANNED AND FROZE LARGE QUANTITIES OF FOOD FOR HER FAMILY. SHE MADE MANY QUILTS FOR THE FAMILY AND ALSO LOVED DOING EMBROIDERY WORK. SHE WAS ACTIVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD BIRTHDAY CLUB. SHE ENTERED TIMELY MISSION NURSING HOME IN OCT 1981. SHE ENJOYED THE ACTIVITIES AT THE HOME, ESPECIALLY THE CRAFTS. HER GRANDCHILDREN WERE SPECIAL TO HER AND SHE TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN EACH OF THEM. PEARL PASSED AWAY FRIDAY JUL 12, 1996 AT THE NURSING HOME. Her obituary listed "Belle" but the funeral folder said "In memory of Sarah Belle Gossman". The above is from notes by Isabelle Gossman Clausen, her granddaughter. I HAVE HER BIRTH AS 8 SEP, DON'T KNOW WHERE THAT CORRECTION CAME FROM, BUT JAMES GOSSMAN SHOWED IT AS 10 SEP. After her husbands death she lived with her son William Earl Gossman and moved with his family in 1944 to Thompson, IA where she had her own house until 1961 when she moved to the Shiff Rest Home, Mason City, IA where she died. Her home was in Buffalo Center near her son Leo. Have list of parents and bro/sis on hand written, need to xfer. MY GRANDPA LEO SAID SHE WAS HALF SCOTCH AND HALF IRISH, BUT WITH HER BEING A WILLIAMS, I THINK HE MEAN'T SHE WAS HALF SCOT/IRISH, AND HALF WELSH. Name Jennings was named after an unknown big wig like a senator of the late 1800's who was named William Jennings Brian. Lived in Nebraska until MAR 1 1944, when they moved to a farm near Thompson, IA. In October, 1957 they retired and moved to Buffalo Center, IA. Their only son Duane bought most of the farm and continued it's operation. MY DAD'S FAMILY FARM WAS LOCATED FROM PLATTE CENTER- 1/2 MI SOUTH, 1 MI EAST, 2 MI SOUTH, 1 MI EAST. FROM COLUMBUS, THERE'S A DAM AND MAN MADE LAKE JUST NORTH OF TOWN ON 18TH AVE. THE OTHER END OF TOWN HAS A LIKE ROAD GOING NORTH WHICH IS 48TH AVE. IF YOU TAKE THE 48TH AVE ROAD NORTH ABOUT 3-4 MILES UNTIL YOU HIT THE SAME ROAD AS THE LAKE (GOING EAST) JUST BEFORE THAT WILL BE WHAT THEY CALLED "PUNKIN HILL" WHICH HAS NOW DEVELOPED TO NICE HOUSES ON A RIDGE OF A HILL. THEN YOU TURN AND GO WEST. JUST AFTER 2 SMALL CURVES IN THE ROAD AND BEFORE YOU HIT THE CREEK/BRIDGE WILL BE THE HOME PLACE FOR ALFRED GOSSMAN ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONCE YOU PASS THE BRIDGE/CREEK ON THE SOUTH SIDE IS THE HOME PLACE FOR MY FATHER DUANE. MY FATHER AND I VISITED IT IN 1995, IT STILL HAD THE GARAGE JUST EAST OF DRIVEWAY THAT MY FATHER AND GRANDFATHER BUILT. JUST S.W. OF THE HOUSE IS WHAT THEY CALLED A SUMMER KITCHEN. THE HOUSE IS NOT VERY BIG, DAD SAID HIS ROOM WAS UPSTAIRS ON THE N.E. CORNER. THE NEXT PLACE TO THE WEST WAS EARL'S HOMEPLACE AND WILLIAMS HOMEPLACE. THEY HAVE NOW TURNED THIS AREA INTO A TRAILER PARK AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. ALTHOUGH THE HOUSE HAS HAD THE PORCH RIPPED OUT AND MASSIVE REMODELING, IT IS STILL THE ORIGINAL HOUSE WHERE MY GRANDPA WAS BORN. THE FAMILY CEMETARY (ST. PATRICKS WITH ST. JOSEPH'S SHARING IT LATER ON AND GOING UNDER THE SAME NAME) IS JUST THE NEXT MILE WEST AND 1 MILE NORTH. THERE IS A ROAD THAT GOES AROUND THE CEMETARY TO THE EAST. THERE WAS ORIGINALLY A CHURCH ON THE PREMISES JUST INSIDE THE SOUTH GATE ON THE WEST SIDE, BUT IT'S NO LONGER THERE. THE OLDEST GRAVES WE FOUND DATED BACK TO 1860'S. AND ALTHOUGH THE KAIPUST FAMILY PLOT IS ON THE FAR NORTH END OF THE INSIDE ROAD, I CAN'T FIND YAN KAPPUST'S GRAVE. I SEEM TO RECALL FROM THE COUNTY RECORDS THERE ARE 6 UNMARKED GRAVES THERE. THE PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS INDEXED BOOKS OF ALL GRAVES IN THE COUNTY IN ALL CEMETARIES. THE CEMETARY ALSO HAD A LARGE STATUE THAT WAS DONATED WITH ANGELS AND A CRUCIFIX. IT IS VERY NICE, THE GRAVES OF MICHAEL KAIPUST ARE JUST BEHIND IT TO THE WEST. FROM COLUMBUS (THEY LIVED 8 MILES FROM COLUMBUS AND 5 MILES FROM PLATTE CENTER) THE KAIPUST'S WERE BURIED ON WEST SIDE LAST ONES ON LEFT IF GOING THRU BY THE NORMAL GATES WHICH GENERALLY STAY CLOSED. JUST OUTSIDE AND ACROSS THE CANAL ABOUT 3/4 MILE ON THE NORTH SIDE WAS THE SITE OF THE SCHOOL HOUSE THAT MY FATHER ATTENDED. THEY CONSTRUCTED MAKE SHIFT BRIDGES FOR THECHILDREN TO CROSS THE CREEK, SO THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO DRIVE THEM ALL THE WAY AROUND TO THE NEXT ROAD TO CROSS THE CREEK. The first obit is for George Peter Kirsch, who passed away on 05-25-1896. This appeared on page 3 of the Muscatine Journal: Death's Summons Old settlers will learn with regret of the death of George Peter Kirsch, which occurred yesterday afternoon, about 4 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Brown, No 213 East Sixth Street. Deceased had been in failing health for a long time and death came as a welcome messenger to relieve all earthly sufferings. Mr. Kirsch was born in Mauer ,Baden Baden, Germany, May 23,1814. When 36 years of age, he left the Fatherland for the country of his adoption, and after three years spent in the Keystone State, he came to Iowa in 1851, since which date his residence in this community has been continuous. He was an honest and industrious citizen and a member of the German Evangelical Church of this city. His death is mourned by two sons and one daughter, Casper, of St. Louis, and Phillip and Mrs. H. Brown of this city. Grand children and great grandchildren also grieve over the old man's demise. The funeral is appointed to take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of his daughter. The obit for Barbara Kirsch is quite a bit smaller, but I may have to continue it on another e-mail. | 934 | In Memory of Bernice Irma Tarbert Obituary for Bernice Tarbert Bernice Irma Tarbert, age 79, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Clarkston Care Center. Bernice was born Sept. 2, 1930, at Scotia, Wash., the youngest of three children of John P. and Marie Kraeber Kress. She graduated from Newport (Wash.) High School and married Floyd L. Tarbert on Sept. 23, 1951. The family lived in Ione, Wash., until moving to Clarkston in the fall of 1965. Bernice was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Floyd passed away Sept. 20, 2002. Bernice was active for many years as a charter member with the Hells Canyon Eagles Auxiliary No. 3936, belonged to the Women of the Moose and worked with the Asotin County Election Board. She was an avid gardener and eco-friendly before it became popular. Floyd and Bernice were featured in the March 1994 issue of Organic Gardening for their gardening techniques. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her sister, Twyla Spinner; and grandson Ryan Johnson. Bernice is survived by a brother, Robert and Jean Kress of Scotia; daughters Trudie and Biff Johnson of Stites and Vicky and Doug Iverson of Warrenton, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no formal services conducted. Instead, a private interment of ashes will be conducted by the immediate family. A celebration of life luncheon will be shared at 1 p.m. next Wednesday at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 505 Maple St., Clarkston.
