    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. The following baptismal records are found in the book "Compendium of Mohawk Valley Families," by Marily Penrose. Unfortunately none of the baptisms have sponsors' names so currently it is conjecture on my part that David, Cobus, Frans, Susanna are all siblings in the same generation. The source for the baptisms is given by the author as "DRC," which means church records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church. The entries appear to come from the same original church book meaning that these individuals with the same last name are geographically close. The location of the church is Caughnawaga, now the Reformed Church of Fonda, in the village of Fonda, Montgomery County, N.Y. Book also contains one marriage entry for this surname: "Cosaadt, Frans m. Nancy Johnson, 6/20/1777 (DRC:161).The entries:
      A. Cosaadt, Cobus And Elizabeth (Seedam): Neyltje, b. 4/4/1776, bapt. 4/24/1776 (DRC:37); Peter, b. 1777, bapt. 4/15/1777 (DRC:42); Cobus, bapt. 2/19/1786 at age 2 months (DRC:76, 77).
      B. David:
      a. David Cosaadt and Jannetje (Stimish): Jacobus, b. 11/27/1774, bapt. 1/27/1775 (DRC:32); Cataluntje, b. 11/25/1779, bapt. 1/23/1780 (DRC:54).
      b. David Cosnat and Janneche (Stumerse) [assumed by author and myself to be the same two individuals as above]: Benjamin, b. 12/24/1772; bapt. 3/31/1773 (DRC:24).
      C. Cosaadt, Frans and Nancy (Johnson): Catrina, b. 3/8/1778; bapt. 5/10/1778 (DRC:47).

      2. The following is from family researcher Kathy Mansfield by email dated 20 Sep 2015 :
Also known as James Cassort and Elizabeth Suydam. Both are buried in Sand Hill Cemetery in Canandaigua, NY, where there are many Cosadts (with various spellings) buried.. Other versions of the names include:
      - Jacobus or James Cassort, Cosort, or Cosaadt. [Note that in German, Jacob means James.]
      - Elizabeth Suydam, Seedam, or Sedam.
Kathy is trying to place her ancestor Catherine Cosadt who married John DeBow. She believes her to possibly be a daughter of James and Elizabeth. John DeBow is from Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He said in his affidavit that he left New Jersey and went up to Charleston, NY in the Mohawk Valley.
The family I have for Jacobus and Elizabeth has large gaps for more children which Kathy believes might be filled as follows: Catharine-1770/1771, Anthony-1772, Heindrich "Henry"-1773, Neyltje-1776, Peter -1777, Susan-1781, James-1785, Eleanor-1786, David-1789 and Charles-1792. That would give the 6 boys (found to date) and 4 girls (found to date).
James tombstone has an age problem. Based on his age, he would have been born in 1748 but I guess that's in the margin of error. It's the Elizabeth Suydam headstone that makes it likely that this is James aka Jacobus. The other James Cassort in Canandaigua has a tombstone in Sand Hill as "James Cassort Jr." -- he was only 43 when he died. The tombstones for this couple read as follows:
      - James Cassort died April 6, 1821 aged 73 years.
      - Elizabeth Suydam wife of James Cassort died Sept. 25, 1836 aged 83 years.
Kathy notes: "Catharine Cassort and John DeBow were married at Ft. Hunter, NY in the Mohawk Valley in 1790 but there is no proof of that other than some affidavits that Catharine DeBow made trying to receive John DeBow's pension back in the 1830s and 1840s. One of her witnesses was a Susan Warner who turned out to be Susan Cassort Warner and another witness was a David Cassort. I'm thinking Susan and David were Catharine's sister and brother."

Ansel DeBow was moved in 1910 by his daughter to Woodlawn Cemetery. I was able to see two DeBow bibles and there was a notation in one of the bibles that mentioned it. I had always wondered why all the other DeBows and Cassorts of that era were buried in Sand Hill but Ansel wasn't.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my email. I have been in this blind alley searching for more information on Catharine Cassort for a while now and when I found your information it was so exciting.

How wonderful to be in England doing research. I am a huge Angliophile. Love British things. We even have Digestive Biscuits with our tea! An English friend introduce me to them years ago.
