1. From Southside Va. Families, Vol. 2, by John Bennett Boddie. Coffer, name in the will of Richard Bennett, Jr. with dau. Silvester and Frances Mangum and the feather bed. A John Coker, aged 21, embarked on the "Plaine Joan" for Virgiinia, Capt Richard Barham, 15 May 1635 (Hotten 79). John Coker was headright of William Boddie in 1665. John Coker and Margaret Coker, his wife, of Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry, on 3 Mar 1687/8 sold to Richard Bennett, the younger, of the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight, 450 acres granted 20 April 1665 on Blackwater and in the parish of Lawne's Creek (DB 3 p. 31) On 5 July 1690 John and Margaret Coker sold to Sion Hill for 1600 lbs. of tobacco 160 acres on Blackwater adjacent to Richard Bennett. Richard Bennett's daughter Jane married John Coker's grandson John Coker. Richard Bennett in his will dated 1720 gave legacies to his daughter Jane Coffer. Notice the difference in the spelling of Coker and Coffer. Coffer is the spelling in Richard Bennett, Jr's will.
