- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. All vital except christening and marriage per information from Ancestral File (AFN: 2QRX-KQ). Parents are William Bardsley and Nancy Spittle. Ordinance Index also shows same father but both a Nancy and a Mary Spittle.
2. Reviewed Rootsweb.com Worldconnect 29 Nov 2002. Database ":ag500" notes the "Mississippi Rev. Soldiers," p. 202, printed by DAR, notes Ellen Bardsley as a second wife to John Mangum.
3. Sometimes Ellen's last name incorrectly appears as Bargely or Beardsley.
4. Censuses:
1851 Iowa State: Pottawattamie County. FHL film 1022203. The entire state was counted but only Pottawattamie listed everyone by name in the household and their ages; other counties only listed the head of the household and a numerical count without names of the various ages by sex in the household. No date is given when the census was taken but it was certified in Dec. 1851; however, the other counties show a Sep 1851 date which also appears more likely for Pottawattamie as well in light of ages given some children with known birthdays in October. Census return:
Mangum: John 24, Mary A. 27, Frances 7, Martha 5, Joseph E. 0. Also in household is Elen Bardsley 23. [Note next door neighbors are the Thomas/Mary Adair and William/Sarah Mangum families. Note also that John Mangum marries Ellen polygamously in 1853 in Utah. The Samuel Adair {with Samuel's daughter John/Permelia Holden family next door to him} is also listed but half the census away in a different part of the county. No other Adairs, Mangums, nor any Richeys listed in census.]
1860 Census for Washington, Washington, Utah, enumerated 27 Jul 1860, page 1035 indicates house #1288 and family #1112 (Samuel Adair, Thomas Adair, Wesley Adair, James Richey, Geo. W. Adair, James Mangum, John Mangum, Valentine Carson, John Price, William Mangum are all listed as neighbors):

BIOGRAPHY:
1. "Mangum Newsletter - The George Albert Mangum Family," Issue 10, Aug. 2005, ed. Joann Hoagland-Oldham : "After 155 years the passenger list record for Ellen Bardsley has been located. It was abstracted as Bardsky but that didn't keep Jammie and her husband James Kennedy of Mesa from finding it. There was reference on the Internet and they went to the Mesa FHC and read the film... Ellen left Liverpool, England, on the ship ARGO, landing in New Orleans on 11 Mar 1850 at age 30. She then continued up the Mississippi River to Iowa, for in an 1851 Iowa census she is with the John Mangum family in Iowa. She then crossed the plains with the Mangums. No record of her on this trek has been found. James and Jammie tell us there are two patriarchal blessings for Ellen in the Church Historian's Office, at least one was received in England. We have death date of 22 Jan 1864 for Ellen form family records. No tombstone has been located. We do know she was deceased by the 1870 census. In 1865 John Mangum is on the Washington Twp., Washington Co., Utah, tax list. We are suggesting Washington, Washington, Utah, as her death place."
2. "Patriarchal Blessing given by John Abuston March 27th 1847 at Newtons Moor, Cheshire England upon the head of Sister Ellen Bardsley, who was born at Royton Lancashire England on the 19th of December 1819. (Age at P. Blessing 35 yrs, 3 months 8 days)
My beloved sister, I lay my hands upon they head in the name of Jesus Christ and by the authority of the Holy Priesthood I pronounce upon thy head the blessing of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In as much as thou hast joined thyself unto the Church of the Lord: and honored the Father in the Son thou art a new creature by baptism and by the righteous law of adoption a joint heiress with thy blessed Redeemer in the blessing of His and His Father's Kingdom. All covenant and gospel blessings are thine through Jesus Christ, who is become thy elder Brother. Be faithful and walk before the Lord in truth, and its beauties shall delight thy soul. MARRIAGE:
1. The book "Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude" by Daughters of Utah Pioneers mentions Mary Ann Adair Mangum and gives a biography for her. See her notes for a full citation. Mary Ann and John were among the first settlers in Payson, Nephi, Washington County, and Kanab, Utah. They later were sent to Alpine, Arizona to settle. While in St. George they helped with the growing of cotton. John took a second wife, Ellen Bardsley, while in Payson, and Mary Hamblin, the adopted Indian daughter of Jacob Hamblin, became his third wife.

My note "nothing" means they were not listed on the lofthouse list nor the list that the Wash. Cemetery has. "No head stone" means they were listed on the lofthouse list and are listed in the City's record as not having a head stone. I do not know if the city has any better records in their office.

2. In an effort to locate and place tombstones in Washington, Utah, I sent the following 6 Jul 2003 email to Barry Blake, city cemetery official wcparks@ci.washingtoncity.state.ut.us [phone is 435-634-9850 ext. 321]:
"My friend and fellow researcher Harold Cahoon gave me your name as the contact for the Washington Cemetery. He spoke to you about locating an early pioneer gravesite for Ann Chestnut Adair, wife to George Washington Adair, and daughter-in-law to Samuel Jefferson Adair whose new statue was just dedicated as the founder of Washington. At age 9, her parents had been murdered somewhere on the Mormon Trail to Utah and she and two younger siblings were tied to a cow and left to wander helplessly. Samuel found her and adopted her. She eventually marries Samuel's son George.
Harold indicates that you do indeed have a record that she is buried in your older cemetery but that the location has been forgotten over the years. Several people would like to contribute to a memorial stone for her. Ann died at age 19 on 27 Mar 1863. Are there any experts with expertise in regards to those early plots that could pinpoint it more accurately. I have found death records of Ann's closest relations who died around the same time and are supposedly buried in the same cemetery which may help to pinpoint her or at least get as close as we can with what available plot maps you have. They are:
Mary Ann Adair Carson, d. 27 Apr 1861, bur. 29 Apr 1861. (Wife of the Valentine Carson who adopts Ann's baby upon her death and cousin to Ann's husband George.)
Olive Parintha Adair, d. at birth 28 Nov 1864, oldest child of George and his second wife Emily Tyler who he married after Ann's death.
Rufus Columbus Burlison Adair, bur. Aug 1858, George's younger unmarried brother.
Samuel P. Adair, d. 30 Jan 1871, another young child of George and Emily Tyler Adair.
Ellen Bardsley Mangum, d. 22 Jan 1864, wife of John Mangum who was a cousin of Samuel J. Adair.
Eliza Jane Clark Mangum, d. 21 Feb 1859, wife of James Mitchel Mangum who was brother to John Mangum and also a cousin to Samuel J. Adair.
Eliza Jane Adair Price, d. 16 Aug 1892, bur. 18 Aug 1892, mother of Valentine Carson noted above, sister of Samuel J. Adair, later wife of John Buren Price.
As you research the plots for the above and their proximity to each other and potentially Ann's, could you advise me as to which one are definitely platted with stones, platted without stones, or just plain unplatted.
What arrangements are needed by us with your department?"
(15 April 2005 follow-up note by Kerry Petersen: I have received no reply to the above. I have now personally visited the city cemetery and the city records office; they cannot verify her gravesite. The city clerk mentioned that they do not excavate graves in the old part of the cemetery because they know there are so many unmarked gravesites. Of the people listed above, I could only find a stone for John and Eliza Jane Adair Price. No further action possible.)
ACTION:
1. Alternate death date and location may be 22 Jan 1879 at Nephi, Juab, UT. Verify.
