    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Zacharias Stocker: Zacharias first shows in Goersdorf where he is named a new citizen in 1674. He along with Hans Jacob Stocker, grandfather of the Pennsylvania immigrant, were the only two Stockers in the earliest Preuschdorf parish records. Zacharias is reported having died in 1692 at Goersdorf. In Feldberg, we find his two first marriages: Zacharias and Maria Keller on 27 Jun 1659; Zacharias and Katherine Schum on 4 Apr 1667. In the 1659 marriage record, he is identified as the son of Christian; in the 1667 marriage record he is identified as a widower and carpenter; and in both records "of Gennenbach." This information shows that he was possibly the son of Christian Stocker and Margretha Wackerin (see A-4 above). Based on Zacharias being first married in 1659, his birth would probably be no later than about 1634 assuming being age 25 or older at the marriage. Five of Christian and Margretha's children are documented being born from 1650 to 1655, which is a large gap from Zacharias' assumed birth date. This may mean that Christian (1605-1669) was married twice with Zacharias being of the earlier marriage. Another problem may be the age difference between Christian and Margretha -- Christian would have been 45 in 1650 and Margretha 10 to 20 years younger to be in her child-bearing years. Such large gaps in years between spouses in this era is a bit unusual but perhaps not impossible. There is also the possiblity that there may have been an earlier generation Christian for which no mention has yet been found in the records. (Price and Associate's report of 17 Feb 2014, p. 4, discusses another Hans Michael Stocker who died in the Preuschdorf in 1762, at age 73, making a birth of 1689. There were then three Hans Michael Stockers in the Preuschdorf area at the same time. The youngest, the Pennsylvania immigrant born in 1701, the younger born in 1689, and the "older" born in 1684 who was father of the Maryland immigrant. Noel Stoker has indicated the one born in 1689 was the son of Zacharias (who married Anna Catharina Naegelin on 21 June 1681 in Preuschdorf); this Zacharias is most likely the same Zacharias who was the son of Christian.)

      2. Four of the children of Zacharias and Anna Catharina Naegelin show up in the following notarial (probate) record from the book "Goersdorf -- Natariat ancien De 1744 à 1791," by Jean Marie Klipfel (Atelier Généalogique de Wissembourg et Environ):
      "Acte no. 102 du 25.5.1752

Ses frères et soeurs [Her brothers and sisters]
      1. Maria Barbara STOCKER, épouse [spouse] de Hannss Heinrich APFEL, Bürger zu Cronweissenburg.
      2. Michel STOCKER, le jeune [the younger], Görsdorf
      3. Elisabetha STOCKER 'welche verehelichetschon in den fünf und zwantzig Jahr abwesend und unwissend' [whereabouts unknown for the last 25 years].

      3. Price and Associates, Inc., (c) Research Report, prepared for Noel Stoker and used by his permission. Report dated 29 July 2016. File name: PreuschdorfExtractions2016June/1333 ADDENDUM. This report was commissioned by Noel Stoker to try to find patterns of Stocker family church entries in Preuschdorf to help find a migration pattern of Stockers to Preuschdorf. There is some interesting information about a Niclaus, but there is no known connection except surname and proximity. There may be some information derived from Nicklaus, but it is too tentative to know without further research. I do not include the addendum listing of all the Preuschdorf entries since they are not within the scope of the Stockers in my database. A transcript of the report:
"Objective: Review Preuschdorf extractions for relevance to
      1) ancestral Hans Michael Stocker (chr 1684), direct descendant of Christian Stocker of Feldberg through his son Johann Friedrich;
      2) Johann Michael Stocker (chr 1688), also a direct descendant of Christian Stocker of Feldberg through his older son Zacharias Stocker
      3) Hans Michael Stocker, Pennsylvania immigrant (chr. 1701), proposed direct descendant of Jacob Stocker of Rottweil/Kottwil, Switerland through his son Hans Jacob Stocker of Feldberg.
      Results:
-Potentially most significant finding was related to Niclaus Stucker/Stocker, "origin of Gross Hochstetten, Switzerland," and later of both Soultz-sous-Forets and nearby Preuschdorf, Alsace, France. Grosshochstetten is located in the canton of Bern, also reportedly the canton containing "Rottwil" or "Kottwill," home of Jacob Stocker during the mid-1600s. As per these most recent extractions, Niclaus and wife Anna Maria migrated to the Preuschdorf by 1695, having two children christened there, Hanns Georg (1695) and Anna Barbara (1697). This appears to be new information. In reviewing previous reports, a Niclaus and Anna Maria Stucker of Hermerswiller had a son Niclaus christened in 1688 at Soultz-sous-Forets, less than five miles from Preuschdorf. As such, it is believed this was the same couple. The Soultz-sous Forets records specifically identified Niclaus with his origin at Gross Hochstetten, providing a direct link to this Stucker/Stocker family later at Preuschdorf. It is possible Niclaus traveled specifically to Preuschdorf in order to join relatives who were already living there.
-Mapped locations of aforementioned sites. Noted Niclaus Stucker/Stocker traveled approximately 300 km (185 miles) almost directly northward in order to move from Grosshochstetten in Bern canton to Preuschdorf in Alsace. A migration from Kottwil (56 km northeast of Grosshochstetten) to Feldberg (120 km) to Preuschdorf (175 km) would also be a continual northward travel pattern. A migration from Oberrotweil (or Niederrotweil) to Feldberg would necessitate first traveling southeast approximately 70 km before proceeding again northward to Preuschdorf (175 km).
-Determined that the new Stocker surname christenings found during this project were mainly members of the Zacharias Stocker line.
-Noted that the last two marriages of Zacharias Stocker which reportedly occurred at Gorsdorf and Preuschdorf are NOT in the printed Preuschorf book. Moreover, recent research confirmed that marriages 1674-1682 are not in the original registers. The sources of the 1678 and 1681 marriages should be restudied in the event the original entries might provide valuable information. Is there a separate register for Gorsdorf?
-Learned the 1681 Lutheran christening at Soultz sous Forets for Hans Philipp Stocker, son of Jacob and Maria Stocker of Hermerswiller, specifically listed the couple as "married people of the Pontif religion" (Catholic). Hermerswiller was also the 1688 residence of the Niclaus Stucker who was originally from Grosshochstetten, Switzerland. While it is not known if the two couples were directly related, it is possible the Stockers of Switzerland were originally Catholic.
-Discovered a statement on Kottwil's Wikipedia page that "Previously, all the inhabitants were members of the Roman Catholic Church." Noted there were Catholic Stockers at Kottwil/Ettiswil, Switzerland by at least 1620. A Jacob Stocker was baptized there in 1621, son of either Johannes or Steffan Stocker (discrepancies between two research reports). He was presumed to be too young to be the same Jacob, father of the Hans Jacob who married at Feldberg in 1661. However, in view of the fact that Hans Jacob's wife Margaretha Schinbein was not christened until Sep 1643, it is possible Hans Jacob was also quite young, having been born ca 1641/3 as well, allowing for his father Jacob to have been born perhaps as late as 1621 at Kottwil.
-Concluded it would be valuable to search post-1640 records at Kottwill for any additional Stocker clues. In later years, it is evident the ancestral family were members of the Lutheran, not Catholic, church as per the Preuschdorf-area registers. The Feldberg Lutheran records only date back to 1639, but the family were adherents by at least 1649 when a burial was found for Hans Stocker. However, it would appear the ONLY records for Kottwil/Ettiswil in Switzerland are Catholic, not Lutheran. Any work in Oberrotweil, Niederrotweil, and/or Rottweil in Germany should continue to focus on Catholic as well as Lutheran entries.
      Recommendations:
-Determine if the 1690 burial date at Goersdorf for Hans Jacob Stocker reveals his age.
-Verify correct sources for the 1687 and 1681 marriages of Zacharias Stocker. Are there separate registers for Gorsdorf/Goersdorf?
-Conduct research in Catholic records of Kottwil/Ettiswill for the years after 1640. Did the Jacob christened in 1621 live to adulthood and remain in this area? Is it possible he married ca 1638/1642 and had a son Hans Jacob ca 1639/1643? Is there a Jacob Stocker and wife Maria at Kottwil prior to 1681 who might have migrated to Hermerswiller in Soultz sous Forets?
-Determine if the Wikipedia statement is true. Were ALL inhabitants of Kottwil members of the Catholic faith or are these simply the only surviving records.
-Assure searches in Oberrotweil, Niederrotweil, and Rottweil in Germany have included all surviving pre-1680 Lutheran as well as Catholic records.
-Carefully examine records of Grosshochstetten, Bern, Switzerland for all Stucker/Stocker, etc entries. Search both Catholic and Lutheran registers."
