      OBITUARY:
      1. "Vergil Henry Bates. Spanish Fork - Vergil Henry Bates, 94, one of the city's oldest residents, died at his home, 355 E. 5th North, Spanish Fork, at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday of causes incident to age. Born in Ware, Mass., April 21, 1855, he was a son of Vergil and Minerva Feery Bates. As a young man he moved to Colorado, where he was active in the Colorado national guard, stationed at Aspen. He came to Utah to settle in Silver City in 1898. He became a mining engineer, in which capacity he was employed until his retirement a number of years ago. He married Minnie Hayes [Hales] Dec. 24, 1900, in Provo. They lived in Silver City until moving to Spanish Fork three years ago. Survivors include his widow of Spanish Fork, a son and a daughter: Harold Bates, Eureka, and Mrs. May Fronsman, Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ettie Bates, Gilroy, Cal. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Spanish Fork Fourth ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Harold Swensen, bishop. Friends may call at the family home in Spanish Fork Sunday night and Monday prior to services. Burial will be in the Spanish Fork city cemetery under the direction of the Valley mortuary, Provo." He came to this city from Silver City three years ago. He also had lived in Colorado where he was a member of the Aspen national guard unit. He followed the mining trade during his lifetime. He was born April 21, 1855, in Ware, Mass. a son of Vergil and Menirva Frery Bates. He married Minnie Hayes [Hales] in Provo, Dec. 24, 1900. Survivors include the widow, Spanish Fork; a son, Harold Bates, Eureka; a daughter, Mrs. May Fronsman, Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a sister, Ettie Bates of Gilroy, Calif. Friends may call at the family home, 355 E. 5th N., Spanish Fork, Sunday evening and Monday prior to funeral service which will be held in the Fourth ward LDS chapel Monday at 2 p.m. under direction of Bishop Harold Swenson. Interment will be in Spanish Fork cemetery with Valley mortuary in charge." Provo Herald, Thurs., 27 Oct 1949.
