“(The connection of [the Longstreet] family comes entirely through the marriage of Stoffel Dircksen Langestraet with Moica)
Jan Lanen Van Pelt.
He was the first of whom we have any knowledge. His true name in its English equivalent was "John Lane", the "Van Pelt" was an addition used, which was quite common in those days to signify where a family came from ... their usual home or locality; or the home of their father, it assisted in distinguishing them. In this instance it was "Jan Lanen of Peel," or translated, "John Lane of Peel." It simply meant that John Lane was from Peel, which in "Lippincott's Gazetteer of the World" is an extensive marsh in the East part of the Netherlands, located in the Provinces of North Brabant and Limburg, occupying about 60 square miles between the Meuse and the Aa. Jan Lanen Van Pelt may have been from "Peel," but he is recorded as living in the city of Liege, Belgium in 1650. Consequently, the history books say he was "not a proper Dutchman but a Walloon." Nothing is known of his birth or death, and only two of his children are known to us.
