      1. Censuses:
1856 Utah Territorial Census was taken because Utah was trying to get statehood to avoid some of the problems that later came. As a result they wanted as many people as possible and frequently included names of everyone in a family without regard to whether they were living or dead. As a result, some of the people listed with the family may not actually have been in the household in 1856. The Adair and Mangums listed included the following heads of households in the Provo and Payson City area: George W. Adair, James Mangum, Joseph Adair (wife Rebecca), Samuel Adair, and Thomas Adair. Source for the following entry is FHL film # 505,913 (index in FHL book 979.2X22u); Ms d 2929 fd. 33, Payson City, p. 8:

1860 Census: Washington, Washington, Utah, 25 Jul 1860, pg. 1017, dwelling 1240, family 1087 (Samuel Adair, Thomas Adair, Wesley Adair, James Richey, Geo. W. Adair, James Mangum, John Mangum, Valentine Carson, John Price, William Mangum, Cyrus Mangum, Samuel N. Adair are all listed as neighbors):
Saml Adair, age 51, farmer, $200 real estate, $650 personal property, born in Alabama.
Roxanna M., age 66, born in Eng.
Catharine G. 14, age 14, born in Iowa.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. The following summary shows all known women as of 16 Apr 2013 with whom Samuel had a living or spiritual connection. The film references are from the old Ordinance Index which has since been replace by New Family Search and then Family Tree. The various classes of wives are broken down as follows:
      A. Actual traditional and documented wives:
      1. Gemima Mangum: Online Ordinance Index (1) FHL film 456338 showing "9 May 1853"; a later entry per FHL film 458480 shows 1864 with no temple noted.
      2. Nancy White: The wife was found and documented in the 1990s. They were married in abt. 1849 in Iowa and had one son together; Joshua Tumer Adair. Nancy and the son remained in Iowa when Samuel and the rest of the family left for Utah in 1852. She subsequently remarried.
      3. Rachel Hunter: Online Ordinance Index FHL film 183393, entry 1877, which is the same date and temple as Gemima Mangum's sealing to Samuel: 9 May 1853 EHOUS. The film shows:
Samuel Adair of Provo, b. 28 Mar '06 in Lawrence Co., S. Carolina sealed May 9, 1853 to:
-Jemima Mangum, dd. [deceased], b. 14 Sep '09 in OH. She died in 1847 and he was sealed for eternity with her 9 May 1853 with her being deceased.
-Rachel Hunter, b. 13 Oct 10 in S. Carolina. Note with her "for time" since she was already sealed to an earlier husband.
Rachel did not remain long with Samuel and is found with her first husband's married name of Davis in the 1860 census in Utah co., Utah.
      4. Anne Catherine Mattison [Laustdatter]: Online Ordinance Index FHL film 183395. Mattison was her father's name. Marriage was in the Salt Lake City Endowment House 22 Oct 1864.
      B. Actual living spouses that have been sketchy until now and for whom no LDS sealings are on record:
      1. Lucinda ___. The online Western Marriage Index (Marriage ID: 253419) shows the following divorce which occurred after Nancy White and before Rachel Hunter. No marriage record has been found preceding this divorce. There was no other Samuel Adair living in Utah co., Utah at this time besides Samuel Jefferson Adair. Divorce Decree, 1 Jan 1853. Source: Utah County, Utah, Probate Docket; Vol. 1; Page 113: Samuel Adair and Mrs. Lucinda Adair. The docket needs to be reviewed.
      2. Roxanna M. ___. "Roxanna M. Adair" shows up with Samuel in both the 1856 Utah and the 1860 US censuses. The 1860 census shows Roxanna born about 1794 in England. FHL film 26401 "Early LDS Church Records of Payson, Utah; Baptisms at Payson," shows a rebaptism for Roxana M. Adair on 16 Mar 1857. This was a few days prior to the Adair family's move to "Dixie" Utah from Payson. She cannot be Samuel's wife Rachel Hunter who was born at a different time and place and shows up with her first husband's surname of Davis in the 1860 census in Utah co., Utah, while Roxanna is in Washington, Wash., Utah. No further is heard of Roxanna after 1860.
      C. Spiritual wives.St. George LDS temple records show that he was "sealed" to these deceased women" whom it does not appear he actually married in real life. Betsy [Elizabeth] Mangum could be his wife Gemima's half sister if it is in fact the same person. These sealings appear to have been by proxy (after their deaths) as part of the "Law of Adoption" then in practice but discontinued by the LDS Church in the 1890s when actual and spiritual polygamy ended. Generally these were women who he or one of his spouses knew as relatives or friends and who probably did not have the opportunity of hearing of the LDS Gospel in their own lifetimes. He was living when sealed to all of them:
      1. Dorthea Nielson, b. Lyn, Denmark; 15 Feb 1877 SGEOR, per FHL film 170595, ref. 122.
      2. Ane Marie Jakobsen, b. in Darum, Ribe, Denmark: 8 Mar 1878 SGEOR, per FHL film 170596, ref. 1590.
      3. Kjerstene Knudsen, b. 7 Jan 1883 at Fyn, Odense, Denmark; 14 Mar 1878 SGEOR, per FHL film 170596, ref. 1852.
      4. Marie Christiane Sorensen, b. Denmark; 10 Mar 1880 SGEOR, per FHL film 170597, ref.4713.
      5. Betsy Mangum, 10 Mar 1880 SGEOR, per FHL film 170597, ref. 4714.
