  • Notes
    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. Middle name may by Fountain. Middle initial F. does show up in several sources as noted below.

      2. Censuses:
      1850 US: District 21, Pottawattamie, Iowa, p. 78b, 13 Sep 1850, entry 217:
      Samuel Adair, 46, Laborer, SC.
      Nancy, 39, VA.
      John, 18, AL.
      George, 15, AL.
      Samuel, 12, AL.
      Rufus, 7, MS.
      Mary, 13, TN.
      Robert, 7, TN.
      Benjamin, 5, TN.
      Jemima, 4, IA.
      Joshua, 1, IA.
Note: this census locates Samuel in Iowa in 1850 with a previously unknown wife [at least unknown among Utah Adair histories]. It appears Nancy brings into this marriage three children of a previous marriage [Mary, Robert, and Benjamin] who were all born in Tennessee. It also shows a son Joshua only a year old whose birthdate Amy Von Cannon [Iowa descendent of Joshua] states as 25 Dec 1849; this would put a marriage between Samuel and Nancy to approximately no later then March 1849. Samuel's first wife Jemima died 28 Apr 1848. The following census has all of the right children in the proper order except Permelia (Pamelia) who is not listed. It is interesting that the exact next entry [#218] has John Holden, 21, Tenn. and Pamelia, 15, Ala. - this is Pamelia, George's twin sister, who is misrepresenting her age as not 13 [due to a marriage to this John of which we were not previously aware] but as 15 which in turn leads the family to say that George is also 15 and not 13. This is definite proof that Samuel's second wife was Nancy ___. Apparently she did not want to leave Iowa which was the cause or the result of a separation with Samuel and her retaining her previous natural children plus their common son Joshua. Years later when the RLDS Church was organized, Nancy and Joshua join like most of the Iowa Saints who remained behind from those who went to Utah. This would explain why Samuel may never have been sealed to Nancy, unlike his other wives, in an LDS temple even though he had the opportunity to do so in Utah [or it may be because she was still alive before he left St. George area for Arizona].

1851 Iowa State: Pottawattamie County. FHL film 1022203. The entire state was counted but only Pottawattamie listed everyone by name in the household and their ages; other counties only listed the head of the household and a numerical count without names of the various ages by sex in the household. No date is given when the census was taken but it was certified in Dec. 1851; however, the other counties show a Sep 1851 date which also appears more likely for Pottawattamie as well in light of ages given some children with known birthdays in October. Census return:
Maynard: Nancy 43, Mary E. 13, Robert 6, Benjamin F. [or T.] 4, Joshua 1. Also in same household is Mary Walker 10 and Charle Hughs 14. [Nancy appears recently separated from her second husband Samuel Adair by the time of this census and living under her first married name of Maynard with her children of the Maynard marriage. Joshua Adair is listed twice - once with Nancy Maynard and once with Samuel Adair; evidently the final custodial arrangements for Joshua were not yet settled by the time of the census. Nancy's next husband Andrew Allen is not in the census confirming that Andrew Allen was not a factor in the breakup of Samuel and Nancy marriage. It also appears their separation was by Sep. 1851 long before his June 1852 departure to the west for which some family researchers have given as the reason for their separation. Her fourth husband is listed in the county's census put several pages away. Samuel Adair is also several pages away as well.]

      1852 Iowa: Pottawattamie County:
Samuel Adair, 8, 3, 1, 1. Nancy should not be with Samuel because they are separated by 1851 per census above. Note also an Andrew Allen and a Jude Allen family is listed 7 and 8 entries below; Andrew Allen marries Samuel's separated wife after 1852 [Nancy did not go west, nor does Andrew Allen; Andrew's first wife Eunice, from whom he separates because he didn't want to go west, did go to Utah in same company as her children and Samuel in 1852. Jude's daughter Jane eventually marries Bishop John Stoker.]

      1856 Iowa: (From Ancestry.com) Raglan, Harrison, Iowa, p. 5 of 5:
Andrew Allen, 73, 4 years in Iowa, NH, farmer.
Nancy, 44, 8 years in Iowa, TN.
Benjaman, 11 years, 8 years in Iowa, "York".

      1860 US: Magnolia P.O., Raglan Township, Harrison, Iowa, p. 782, dwelling 196, household 180, enumerated 22 Jun 1860 US:
      Andrew Allen, 78, farmer, $800, $500, VA.
      Nancy F., VA.
      Joshua, 9, IA.
      Emma J., 4, IA.

1870 US: Index searched for O'banions in Nebraska without success. Checked the following Iowa townships page by page without success:
Harrison County: Boyer, Magnolia, Raglan, and Harrison.
      Monona: All townships.
Nancy White married Evans O'Banion in 1868 and he died by 1874. Nancy signs her name as Nancy Allen for consent for her daughter Emma's marriage to Charles Taylor in 1875. It seems that the 1870 census would be confirm the O'Banion family grouping especially since it should also have her 15 year old daughter Emma Jeanette Allen also listed. I cannot find the 1870 census for them but I can find them all in 1860 and Nancy and Emma in 1880. Evans' son Jasper is listed in Boyer Township, Crawford, Iowa.

      3. These Jan 2002 emails are from Amy Von Cannon, a family researcher and descendent of Joshua and member of the Reorganized LDS, who lives in Iowa :
      a. "Yes he left a story. I will send it on to you. I have to say that he was very ill and died within the month of writing it and many of the facts in the story were twisted and names were wrong. And the rest is right on the money. I guess when a story is handed down for 140 years it changes a little with each that handle it until it's written down. You were asking about dates. I have census registry off of Ancestry.com that lists Samuel and Samuel Newton in Pottawattamie County in 1850/1851/1852. I have the actual census of 1850 and 1852 and Samuel is with Thomas Adair in Kanesville, now Council Bluffs. We have three different dates on Joshua for birth 1847/48/49 its listed different on baptism and other documents. If you look up Joshua on LDS records you will find him under Joshua (L) and Joshua Tumer which both are wrong, it Joshua Tumeric. I didn't copy the whole page with Mangum's on it too, but Andrew Allen is 7 lines under Samuel on Census of the Settlement. Also Jemima was on the 1851 with Joshua and the id # for Jemima was IA05655 and Joshua was IA05658 - they were separated by 3 numbers. There were more Adairs and the numbers run like a family unit. On the family history it lists the parents of Joshua from KY, I have found that Joshua didn't really have an idea where they originally came from, he listed in many census's, different places of origin for both parents. I found his mother and she originated from Va. I have a picture of Nancy, but not of Joshua."
      b. Amy provided the following copy of Joshua's biography from a grandson of Joshua. [Kerry's note: the items regarding wives for Samuel, George, and Newton, and the Guardian Angels is standard anti-mormon misinformation rampant in the late 1800's with no basis of truth as family research has confirmed; this rhetoric was prominent in RLDS areas of the same period and under which influence Joshua was involved. Also the author is misinformed perhaps about Samuel in that he did not know Nancy before the death of his first wife Rebecca Mangum in Apr 1848 and was not married to Nancy until Iowa and is not the father of Benjamin, Lucy, nor Nancy. Finally the birthdate of 1847 for Joshua appears erroneous in light of other available sources such as the death certificate and obituary.]: "Adair Family History. This family history was written by Marvin C. Adair. The family name of Adair is a patriarchal name, not an occupational name. It originated with the Earl of Adair of Scotland. This is recorded in the books of heraldy. Research by the American Historical Society has proven the family name has been prominent in American history. We have a bicentennial flag from them honoring the family as a Bicentennial Family in 1976. Permission was given the name of Marvin C. Adair to be placed in a book of bicentennial families in the Library of Congress. Family history as related by Grandfather Joshua T. Adair and Grandmother Arilla Eliza Rickman Adair. This branch of the Adair family with Samuel Adair as father and his wife who's maiden name O'Bannion came from the territory of Kentucky. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints somewhere between Kentucky and Kaneville, IA, now known as Council Bluffs. Their family consisted of Newton, George, Benjamin, Lucy, Nancy and Joshua, my grandfather who was born December 25, 1847 in Kaneville. When Joshua was 18 months old, Great Grandfather Samuel and his sons, Newton and George took four wives and followed Brigham Young to Salt Lake City, Utah. Great Grandmother Adair, two boys Benjamin and Joshua and the two girls Lucy and Nancy were forced to hide for safety from the 'Guardian Angels' of the Brighamite faction because the girls were old enough to be given in marriage and were desired by the sons of the Brighamites. Great Grandmother obtained a legal separation and later married a man whose surname was Allen and raised that part of the family. While Joshua was still young, he lived with and worked for the magistrate of Kaneville. While there, he read for the law. He was admitted to the bar to practice law at Soldier, IA. As he worked and studied he traveled in the summer with a man named Kaywoodie and his freight wagon from Kaneville to Preparation Settlement in Western Iowa. There he met Arilla Eliza Rickman. They married in 1869. The Rickman family had joined the original church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints somewhere between New Amsterdam and Kirtland, OH. Arilla's mother, Rebecca, is said to have broken her dishes for the Kirtland Temple building. She and her husband, John Rickman, were acquainted with Joseph Jr. and Emma Smith. They stated that Joseph and Emma were the most handsome couple they had ever seen. Grandmother was a very small girl when they reached Preparation Settlement where she lived and met and married Joshua T. Adair. To this union was born eight sons and five daughters. John William (Marvin's father), Benjamin, Daniel, Anna, Florence and Mary were born in Iowa where Grandfather farmed and practiced law. He traveled from settlement to settlement as the circuit lawyer and judge. In 1883, he traveled with the cavalry as legal representative and on the way back home, he stayed overnight in Decatur, NE. He liked it. A year later, he moved his family there. More children were born. Walter, Samuel, Clyde, Ralph, Thomas, Margaret (Rita Foster's grandmother) and Lillie. Grandpa practiced law and did carpentry while living in Decatur. Later he moved to Macy and was magistrate until about 1936. As far as I know, all of the J. T. Adair family were baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. To John Wm. and Isabelle L. James was born one son, Marvin C. Great Grandfather Samuel Adair, I was told was head scout of the Mormon train. George was counselor to the Mormon Bishop. Newton was a founder of the Mormon colonies in Arizona. Grandfather went to Utah to visit his brothers and his nephews came and visited in this (Decatur-Macy) area. Marvin sent me a single typewritten page, front and back with the information on it after I contacted him in the '80's for some info on our family background. Marvin also told me in a phone conversation that our family had come here from Scotland in 1625, not for reasons of escaping religious persecution in Scotland, but to set up their own kingdom. I did some research with the Mormons one evening and we think that the Samuel Adair mentioned in the Who's Who In Mormon History of Utah is our ancestor. My phone number is 417-962-9621. Please feel free to call. This is so exciting. I learn more about us everytime I read this history Marvin gave me. Till I hear from you on this. Rita. Sorry I forgot relationship to Samuel. It reads like this:
      1. Samuel Adair
      2. Joshua Tumeric Adair
      3. John William Adair
      4. Marvin Clyde Adair
      5. Betty Lou Adair
      6. Amy L. Morris, I would be Samuels GGGgranddaughter"
      d. 20 Feb 2002: "At this time Nancy is as much a mystery to us. I don't think that Nancy was in the RLDS church either. She seemed to marry men that were in some way connected to the LDS church. The names that we have for Nancy at this time, (order really unknown) Maiden name?? We have Nancy Fountain White Adair Allen Maynard O'Banion. We have a marriage listing for Andrew Allen & Nancy Maynard, but were not really sure this is our Nancy and Andrew. Then we have the oldest family member which would be Nancy's Ggrandson remembering that her Maiden name was Fountain. We have Evan O'Banion and Nancy's Marriage
listing. We have no information on Nancy's life before Iowa of 1849; we cannot find her before Iowa and we lost her after 1880. She is not buried with any of her husbands. I don't know what any of the children's last names are from previous marriages. Nancy's son Benjamin went to Deadwood, S. Dakota, that is what my uncle said. The only thing I have on birth place is Virginia and that seems to be consistent in all censuses that she has been on as hers and her parents' birth place."

      4. 25 Aug 2002 email from Jeannie Aldredge at :
      a. Joshua's obituary lists his father but not his mother. Was he disconnected from her? It also appears according to Jeannie that none of her children may have taken her in in her old age if she was in fact Nancy O'Banion when she died.
      b. The following info is from the 1982 Monona County History Book under a section regarding Jordan Township: "Finally, in 1873, the primary election took place and the following were elected as Jordan Township's first officers: George Montague, President; J.T. Adair, Clerk; Samuel Rickman and Thomas Rickman, Directors; and J.M. Ballantyne, Treasurer." "The first marriage in the township was that of Daniel Butler, sometimes known as Daniel Rickman, and Miss Eunice Allen." Jeannie's notes: Joshua was married to Eliza Arilla Rickman and Joshua's mother, Nancy, was married to Andrew Allen. Andrew Allen's first wife was Eunice Miner. Since the info from the book refers to Eunice as a "Miss," it could be a daughter of Andrew or even just a coincidence. Another researcher, Barbara Eades, states: Andrew & Eunice may have had a daughter by the name of Eunice. Eunice, Andrew's wife was quite elderly when she left Iowa with her grown children and headed for Salt Lake City. She rode on the back of the wagon of her son. She never saw Andrew or the children that stayed in IA again and died in UT.

      5. Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm indexes marriages for Harrison County, Iowa; it shows Nancy Allen marrying Evans O'Banion on 5 Jul 1868. O'Banion is dead in 1874 and we find in the 1880 census for Belvidere, Monona, Iowa where Nancy Allen, age 69 born in VA, is living with a daughter Mary Lamb, age 42 born in TN. The 1880 census correlates well with the 1850 census for Iowa where we locate Samuel Adair and Nancy, age 39 born in Virginia, and several children including Mary, age 13 born in TN. Nancy and Mary's ages and birthplaces correlate correctly. Unsure why Nancy took on her previous married name of Allen after O'Banion's death unless the marriage to O'Banion was of mutual care and convenience. She also uses O'Banion and Allen interchangeably in turning over the land deeds left per her deceased husband Andrew's will in favor of their daughter Emma when Nancy remarries.

      6. Email from Amy VunCannon 7 Sep 2002: "The relationship of the Adairs and the Allens through my branch's story is that Nancy left Samuel when Joshua was eighteen months old for Andrew Allen, she and Andrew both had decided not to follow the wagon train, both of their spouses Samuel Adair and Eunice Allen were members of the LDS and they both went on to Utah, but I have found no record of Andrew or Nancy as members. But the funny thing is that Nancy's last husband (Evan O'Banion) was an active LDS. I believe one of the Allen researchers told me that there was a story in the family that Nancy and Andrew were deserted by their spouses and they in turn headed off to Utah together, because a woman couldn't travel in the train without a male companion and Samuel was that companion to Eunice until they got there. I figure that makes sense to me - they both needed something from each other, she probably helped with Samuel's children. No proof though, just family tales." [Kerry's note: my research has not found any relationship between Sam Adair and Eunice Allen except that they happened to be in the same large company together to Utah in June 1852 - in fact she traveled with her adult Children. Both of their ex-spouses, as did many lax Mormons of that time and place, chose not to go to Utah. We have found indications that Andrew Allen was an excommunicated LDS member - see his notes in this database. I have found no proof that Evan O'Banion was active LDS in Iowa.]

      7. Email 31 Aug 2003 from Barbara L. Eades :
      a. "There is a story that Emma told about how Nancy would "farm" out the kids for a certain amount of $. One time she went and got one of them (don't recall if I was ever told which one, though), and the Sheriff caught her and she made up some story and went on with the child. This seems a little far fetched to me, however. Yes, people did indenture kids to learn a trade, gain an education, etc., but there were usually court documents verifying this. If this were the case, I have not heard of any such documents."

      8. Email of 8 Sep 2003 to several interested researchers: "There is an intriguing angle for Nancy's daughter Mary from her first marriage in Tennessee to an unknown individual. The 1850 census for Nancy in Iowa shows her married to Sam Adair with three children she brought into the marriage including her oldest child Mary. This Mary may be a key to tracing Nancy back to her first marriage. See especially the notes I include below with Nancy's 1880 census return. Nancy [Allen, since O'Banion is presumably dead by 1880] is living with with Mary Lamb in 1880 in Belvidere, Monona, IA of all places. Belvidere is where we find Joshua Adair in 1870 with his inlaws the Rickmans. We also find Emma Allen and her husband closeby in 1900. Mary in 1880 fits the same age and birthplace as she did in 1850. What is interesting is that I have now found Mary in 1870 living in Magnolia/Raglan, Harrison, Iowa fitting the same age and birthplace and finally with a husband Charles Lamb who must have been evidently deceased by 1880 - what is interesting is that this place is in 1870 is on Allen Creek and very likely the same Andrew Allen land which was willed to his daughter Emma J. Allen upon his death in 1867 and upon his wife Nancy remarrying which she did in 1868 to O'Banion. I also found O'banion in Magnolia in 1860 census as noted below. Below I also note land ownership records which give range, section, and township data and shows that the land remained with a C.W. Lamb into the early 1900's (a possible son of Mary since Mary moves to Monona county by 1880?). As also noted below, Harrison County marriage records also lists a marriage between Charles Lamb and May D. Field [Mary DeField?] on 20 Sep 1868 which corresponds well to 1870 census where they have a young son Benjamin under age 1. Note in 1870 the Lambs also have a young boy age 7 named William DeField which could be a son Mary had in a previous marriage to a ____ DeField - by 1880 this boy William is listed with last name of Lamb. Some thoughts on how Mary might help us:
      a. Barbara, how does the legal description of the Lamb land compare with the deed copies you have? Amy any chance of following the land transactions at the Harrison County courthouse thus proving this relationship?
      b. Amy any chance of seeing the listed Harrison county marriage record for Lamb and "D.Field" or Defield to see if Mary's parent names are listed which would lead us to Nancy's first spouse?"

      9. Jeanie Aldredge believes that Maynard was Nancy's first husband. Her notes: children of Nancy White and Unknown Maynard are:
      Lucy MayNARD.
      Nancy MayNARD.
Mary Elizabeth MayNARD, b. 1839, Tennessee; d. Abt. 1915, Iowa.
      Robert MayNARD, b. Abt. 1843.
      Benjamin MayNARD, b. Abt. 1845.

      10. On file from Jeannie Aldredge, I have a 40 page Nancy Fountain White descendancy listing with research notes. I have cited all information concerning this specific individual into these notes.

      11. Nancy's children Mary and Benjamin Maynard:
      A. Nancy joined the Reorganized LDS Church and gave her birth date and place: FHL book 973-K2bs "Early Members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," compiled by Susan Easton Black, vol. IV, p. 641: "Obanion, Nancy S. Birth: 11 Nov. 1811, Halifax Co., VA. Nancy S. O'Banion was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on September 1874 at Magnolia, Harrison, Iowa, by N. Fyrando. Source: Early Reorganization Minutes, 1872-1905, Book C."
      a. Note also her daughter Mary E. Maynard and her husband Charles Taylor in the same source:
      i. "Mary E. Lamb. Birth: 30 May 1837, Gibson Co., TN. Mary E. Lamb was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 6 September 1874 at Magnolia, Harrison, Iowa, by Magnus Fyrando. She attended the Clearwater, Nebraska Branch. Source: RLDS Deceased Files, Early Reorganization Minutes, 1872-1905, Book C, and Clearwater, Nebraska, RLDS Branch Records."
ii. "Charles W. Lamb. Birth: 14 Mar 1839, Oakland County, Michigan. Death 5 Nov 1921. Charles W. Lamb was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 21 November (December) 1875 by Phineas Cadwell. He was a talented writer. His poems and articles appeared in Church publications. He attended the Magnolia, Iowa Branch. Source: RLDS Deceased Files; 'Saints Herald' Obituaries, 29 Nov 1921, p. 1152." Transcription of the obituary: "Charles W. Lamb was born in Oakland County, Michigan, March 14, 1839. Baptized December 21, 1875. His father and mother resided in 1820 in the neighborhood where Joseph Smith became interested in religion and received his first vision. They became members of the church either in the latter part of 1830 or beginning of 1831, and remained faithful. Charles Lamb was a man of little schooling, yet educated because of his library and the use he made of it. He had talent as a writer, and his poems and articles have appeared in the church publications. Died November 5, at the home of John Swalley, where the funeral services were held. Sermon by his nephew, J.F. Mintun."
      b. The book "History of Harrison County, Iowa," 1891, FHL 977.747-H2n, p. 170, in speaking of the RLDS branch in Magnolia: "The Latter Day Saints (reorganized) was formed at Magnolia March 17, 1870. The present membership is 189. The first services were held at schoolhouses. The church was erected in 1874. It is a frame structure 32x58 feet. It was dedicated by President Joseph Smith. The Presidents of this branch of the church have been: Phineas Cadwell, who served thirteen years; Charles Derry, Donald Maule, one year, and the present incumbent, A.M. Fyrando, who was chosen in 1888. At one time the church numbered 299, but owing to removals and the formation of churches at Woodbine and Logan, many were taken away. The present average of Sabbath school attendance is 45."
      B. The above finally gives us a birthdate and location for Nancy and a location in Tennessee where one of her children was born in 1837. It would seem to indicate that Nancy's first husband before Samuel Adair was a Maynard. The following information on her son and Mary's brother Benjamin Maynard also helps:
      a. 1860 US Census: Magnolia, Harrison, Iowa, p. 808, entry 414: Benjamin Maynard, 15, apprentice blacksmith, TN. He is living with and apprenticed to John W Williams.
      b. Civil War Service:
      i. The book "Report of the Adjutant General and Acting Quartermaster General of Iowa, etc.," Jan. 1, 1863, vol. I, p. 572, FHL film 6084439, Civil War rosters: "Fifteenth Infantry - Roster of Company H: Benjamin Maynard, age 18, residing at Magnolia, Harrison, nativity Tenn., rank private, date of going into quarters Nov. 22, '61, date of muster into U.S. Service Feb. 22, '62, Dis. [discharged] disability Aug. 10, '62." Note that Company H originally had 90 men. No Iowa listing for any other Maynard including his brother Robert. Benjamin is found by name only in the same company in the book "History of Harrison County, Iowa," 1891, FHL 977.747-H2n, p. 66.
ii. FHL film 881824, "Iowa Index to Service Records in Civil War": "Benjamin Maynard, Co. H., 15 Iowa Infantry, Pvt., Pvt." [Brother Robert Maynard not listed.
      c. The book "History of Harrison County, Iowa," 1891, FHL 977.747-H2n, p. 237: "Benjamin Maynard, of section 16, lived there from 1874 to 1880, sold and removed to Kansas. He is now editing the 'Courier' at Blair, Neb."
      d. 1880 US: Tombstone, Pima, AZ, p. 175: "B.F. Maynard, single, male, 33, TN, miner, both parents born VA." He is listed with seven other men with Mr. and Mrs. John McGregor. Note that the 1870 census may have our same Benjamin living in Pioche City, Lincoln, NV, p. 207a, entry 470, has "B. Maynard, age 23, TN, miner" listed living with to two other miners: Ed Bradley, 40 and L.E. Carr, 41, both of Ireland.
      e. FHL film 541076, "General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934," US Veterans Administration: "Benjamin [F. or T. - penmanship hard to read] Maynard, Service in H., 15 Iowa Inf., date of filing 18 Sep 1889, invalid application 729212, filed from State of AZ." Widow and minors left blank. This is only an index and a form and fee has to be sent in to National Archives to have the actual application copied and sent since these applications are not on film. This application definitely proves that our Benjamin has an association with Magnolia, Iowa and with Arizona.

      12. It would seem that Nancy had some affiliation with the early LDS church considering her last three marriages. Assuming the first marriage before Iowa was to a Maynard, I checked out pre-Iowa Mormon Maynards for a potential husband from several LDS sources. There are only references to three Maynards I can find:
      a. Jonathan Maynard and Nelson Maynard excommunicated 26 Apr 1839 at Far West, Missouri. These don't fit since they should be in Tennessee at that time period to be considered.
      b. Silas Maynard, was arrested with Joseph Smith and several others in Richmond, MO on 12 Nov 1838 and released 24 Nov 1838. Later also appears 1 Sep 1844 being ordained an Elder in Quincy, IL. No further mention thereafter. Doesn't appear to be the right one since again he is in MO when he should be in TN.
Note: 1840 census index for all of TN has 11 Maynards/Maynors/Maynords but none in Gibson Co. 1850 census for Gibson Co. has William Maynard on p. 192 and Richard O. Mayner on p. 226. None look promising yet without more correlation.

      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. Photos on file received from Barbara L. Eades include:
      a. Photo with Nancy and her daughter Emma Allen (father Andrew Allen) circa 1865-67. Emma appears to be about 10 to 12 years of age and she was born in 1855.
      b. Another of Nancy quite aged.

      2. Extracts from 15 page biography or Eunice Miner with photos received 31 Aug 2003 from Barbara L. Eades [full copy in Samuel Adair file]: "...Andrew Allen lived alone for about three years and then married a much younger woman - 30 years younger - by the name of Nancy who had a son by a previous marriage. Andrew helped to raise young Joshua. Andrew's beloved daughter Emma Jannet Allen was born in 1856. Andrew died at age 84 years and 5 months on January 10, 1867, leaving his estate to his 11-year old daughter Jannet and his 55-year old wife Nancy. (Will written on January 6, 1866. FHL film 1510,109 item 4 p. 522.) He stated in his will that if his wife Nancy remarried, his estate would go to his daughter Jannet..."

      3. Email dated 11 Jun 2013 from Andrew Allen's descendant Ryan Purcell who is publishing a book on the Allen family of which I attach a first draft to the notes of Andrew Allen which has some good material on Nancy White and Samuel Adair. It is subject to further corrections before publication.
Ryan in his email also makes the following comments:
"Though Samuel is not my line, there are a few things that I can clear up. There are numerous reports that Nancy left Samuel for Andrew Allen. That is simply not the case. When the 1851 Iowa Census shows Samuel and Nancy living apart, Andrew and Eunice are still in Ohio. That's why they don't show up on that census. Andrew and Nancy had not even met when she split with Samuel, and Nancy and Andrew didn't marry for two years after their spouses left for Utah.
"Another story is that Samuel and Eunice left for Utah together. While it's true that they left Iowa at the same time with Benjamin Gardner, Eunice traveled with her son, Jude, and daughters, Sarah and Nancy. There is no indication or rumor that they had anything to do with each other in Utah. Eunice lived with her crippled daughter, Nancy Nicholas, until she and her husband moved away from Bountiful. At that point, Eunice went to live with her other daughter, Sarah Coltrin, and that is where she stayed until her death. She is buried with Jude's wife, Mary Ann.
What I'm doing is writing four books of family history, one for the lines of each grandparent. The first two are done and I'm now working on number 3. The Allen history is part of that book."

      4. Notes of D. Neil Allen, 5534 S 1425 East, South Ogden, UT 84403, 801-476-6854, viking893@msn.com received 25 Jul 2015. BIRTH:
      1. FHL book 973-K2bs "Early Members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," compiled by Susan Easton Black, vol.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Husband Samuel J. Adair left summer of 1852 for Utah and she remained in Iowa. Her marriage to Andrew Allen had to occur between then and about 1854 since their daughter Emma was born in 1855 and Andrew's wife Eunice left at the same time in the same wagon company (riding with her son Jude Allen). Andrew was in his early seventies when Emma was born in 1855. Judging from the extremity of ages, it appeared that Nancy was looking for perhaps financial support from Andrew.

      2. LDS Ordinance Index shows per film 1553846, sheet 39, batch 9022907 a modern temple sealing 24 May 1991 for a marriage between Andrew Allen and Nancy Maynard 17 Sep 1854 in Pottawattamie Co., IA. About a year later Emma Allen is born to this couple from which we can suppose that Nancy Maynard is Nancy White and probably had married a ____ Maynard between Samuel Adair and Andrew Allen. Website http://iagenweb.org/pottawattamie/vitals-marriages.htm#CourtRecords has marriages from original court records for this county from 1848 - 1880; one entry is Andrew Allen and Nancy Maynard 17 Sep 1854. Per FHL book 977.771 V2p" Pottawattamie Co., IA Early Marriages 1848-1869": "Andrew Allen and Nancy Maynard 17 Sep 1854."

      3. From Barbara Eades 30 Aug 2003:
      a. "Nancy signed 21 Jul 1875 a consent slip [copy on file with me] which is affixed to the record book at the Harrison County, IA, Clerk of Court office testifying to Emma J. Allen's age will be 19 on 29 Aug 1875 for her marriage to Charles Taylor on 21 Jul 1875. She signs as Nancy F. Allen; however, adding to this mystery, she had already married Evan O'Banion but he had by this time died. Strange she would sign her name as Nancy F. Allen, but then even stranger when she signs the deed for lands over to Emma she states on there Nancy O'Banion formerly Nancy F. Allen (something similar to this anyway). So, the question in my mind, after Evan died (which must not have been very long after they married) did she just decide to go back to her Allen name thus signing the document testifying to Emma's age when Emma married? This woman certainly is a mystery to say the least." As for the Maynard name, the cousin who had the pictures I emailed you had some pictures of a man whose first name escapes me at this moment, but last name was Maynard, and on the back he was referred to as "Uncle." So, more fire is added to the mystery."
      b. "I have several documents in my possession relative to this family. I have Andrew's will, a document Nancy signed when Emma married, and deed(s) wherein Nancy basically signed over to Emma, per Andrew's will, land. In the one deed in particular, Nancy signed her name as O'Banion, and a notation something to the effect of formerly Nancy F. Allen. This would tend to support her marriage to an O'Banion, obviously. Andrew's will was probated 1 Apr 1867."

      4. Amy reports that Iowa did not make marriage and divorce records mandatory until 1880 or so and they did not enforce the law until about 1890 to 1900.

      5. Www.rootsweb.com/~iaharris/marriage/ba.htm has an 1853-1905 Marriage Index for Harrison County. Entries:
"Emma J. Allen and Chas. Taylor 7/21/1875"
"Nancy Allen and Evans O'Banion 7/5/1868"
I looked up two films 1513295 it. 3-5 (which was a poorly kept book of granted marriage licenses) and 1513294 (which was the recording of marriages giving only the groom and bride's names and who performed the marriage). There was no license shown in the first film. The second film had the same exact information as the index.

      6. Jeannie Aldredge thinks that Maynard may have been the first husband's name and that she returned to that name after marriage to Adair but before marriage to Allen.

      7. I checked FHL films 2113895 (Marriages 1824-1950) and 1002623 (Marriages 1824-1957) for Gibson Co., TN records since Mary, Nancy's daughter, is definitely born there. Ben Maynard and his brother Robert also show TN. I did not, however, find any recorded marriages for our Nancy White.
It seems most likely to me that Nancy was married first to unknown Maynard before coming to Iowa and marrying Adair.

      DEATH:
      1. From Barbara Eades: there was a story passed down in the family that we have got to check out. It says basically, paraphrased, that Nancy was bedridden in her last years and living of all things with Joshua in NE. One day there was a fire at the house, and Joshua and his wife were in the fields and saw the smoke. They went running back to the house and found Nancy outside under a tree with the baby. They did not know how she got herself or the baby out of the house. Again, I stress this is a story that has passed down. I did go and look online for the County he lived in per Emma's obit (forget the name now), but did not find any online cemeteries. I have found many times that these family stories do have some part and parcel of truth to them, the problem being of course separating the fact from fiction. To be honest, this is the cloest thing to anything we have found yet of where she may have died. It has been sort of like she disappeared.

      BURIAL:
      1. Notes of Neil Allen viking893@msn.com received 25 Jul 2015 "Notes of finding the burial place for Nancy White":
"Many reported genealogies have shown that she died about 1881. Some show that it was in Iowa City, Iowa. No records have been found that verify this date and place. Going with the assumption that she did die about this time it is of value to know where she was living then.
Searching all available records dated after 1880 for Nancy Allen did not show any positive results.
The last known record of Nancy is in the United State Census of 1880 Belvidere, Monona, IA. Nancy Allen is listed in the household of her daughter Mary [Elizabeth Maynard] Lamb [b. Abt 1838]. Nancy is Age 69 widowed b. 1811 VA. Mary Lamb is 42 b. TN, married, with her sons William Lamb 16 b. IA, Ben Lamb 10 b. IA.
Note: She is listed as Nancy Allen and not Nancy Adair or Nancy O'banion. She has apparently taken and is using the surname Allen at this time.
With the premise that she might be living with or near her children I found that the cemetery records of Pleasant View Cemetery in Moorhead, Monona, IA provided some positive clues. She was in Belvidere in 1880 and Moorhead is only about 40 miles away.
Moorhead Monona IA Spring Valley Cemetery
This is where her daughter Emma Jeanette Allen Taylor is buried. Why is she buried here? Her husband Charles Andrew is also buried here. Many of the family were born here and are buried here. There are also many of her children and their spouses buried here, namely, John A. (1880-1963), Frank B. (1883-1902), Ray Earl (1888-1952), his wife Nellie M Goodno, Bruce Lyman (1894-1960), his wife Maude Taylor, Sarah Martha Allen (1890-1980) and her husband Claude E. Coberly and their daughter Madgell.
Could she be buried here? Find-A-Grave didn't have her listed.
How about near Mary Maynard Lamb? Where is she buried? Her husband, Charles Willard Lamb is buried in Magnolia, Harrison, Iowa. See: Find-A-Grave Memorial# 62136074. She is not shown there and anywhere else in Iowa or Nebraska."

      ACTION:
      1. We should check for Nancy's burial perhaps in Clearwater, Nebraska. It appears from RLDS records that her daughter Mary went to church there and the 1880 census is the last record we currently have of Nancy and it shows her living then with her daughter.

      2. Request pension records for Ben Maynard from Nat. Archives. May have further bio. info.

      3. Check Halifax Co., VA for Nancy's birth family.

      4. It would seem that Nancy had some affiliation with the early LDS church considering her last three marriages. Assuming the first marriage before Iowa was to a Maynard, I checked out pre-Iowa Mormon Maynards for a potential husband from several LDS sources. There are only references to three Maynards I can find:
      a. Jonathan Maynard and Nelson Maynard excommuncated 26 Apr 1839 at Far West, Missouri.

      5. 1840 census index for all of TN has 11 Maynards/Maynors/Maynords but none in Gibson Co. 1850 census for Gibson Co. has William Maynard on p. 192 and Richard O. Mayner on p. 226. None look promising yet without more correlation.
