    • RESEARCH_NOTES:
      1. From Don and Carolyn Smith, one part of three writings of Samuel Newton Adair. [As to source, Carolyn referred me to Becky Hamblin [bhamblin79@hotmail.com] to try to locate the original of this; Becky in turn believes Collins Chapman in Mesa may have it since Collins' mother is the granddaughter who hand wrote it for Samuel]: "Luna, New Mexico, January 22, 1920. I, Samuel Newton Adair, will write what I know about my father's folks. My grandfather on father's side was named Thomas Adair. He married Rebecca Brown. He lived at Lawrence County, South Carolina in 1806. My father was the oldest son of Samuel Jefferson Adair. Thomas Adair was the next oldest son. George Adair was next oldest son. John Wesley Adair was the youngest son and went with the Mormon Battalion in 1846. The girls names were Eliza Adair Price, Sally Adair Mangum, died on the plains in 1852. Mary Ann Adair Mangum married John Mangum." Surprisingly, Laney is not on the list; however, her sister Mary Ann did temple work for her listing her as a sister as noted below.

      2. Censuses:
1830 US: Pickens Co., Alabama, pages 111-112. The first three related families are all on the same page, the next four related families are on the next page, and James Adair (with son Joseph) is on p. 129:
      Thos. Peeks, males 0-5:1; 5-10:1; 20-30:1; females 0-5:1; 5-10:1; 10-15:1; 30-40:1.
      John Mangum, males 5-10:1; 10-15:2; 15-20:1; 60-70:1; females 0-5:1; 5-10:1; 10-15:1; 30-40:1.
      Cyrus Mangum, males 20-30:1; females 0-5:1; 15-20:1.
      Saml. Carson, males 20-30:1; females 20-30:1; 80-90:1.
Saml. Adair, males 20-30:1; females 20-30:1.

      James Adair, males 0-5:2; 15-20:1; 20-30:2 (Joseph b. 1806); 60-70:1; females 15-20:1; 20-30:2; 60-7-:1; no slaves.

      1850 US: District 7, Itawamba, Mississippi, 5 Nov 1850, family 581:
      John L. Ewing, 29, farmer, $300, AL.
      Laney Ewing, 25, AL.
      Harry Ewing, 22, farmer, AL.
Next door neighbor is probably parents of John:
John M. Ewing, 55, farmer, VA.
      Sarah Ewing, 50, TN.
      Henry Ewing, 15, farmer, AL.
      Moses Ewing, 11, MS.
      Gilbert Ewing, 9, MS.
      Notes:
      1. Also in same district, family 488, is William Ewing, wife Martha, and child John. William is 25 born in Alabama.
      2. Laney Adair Ewing is living next door to Meeky Crawford Evans, sister to George W[ashington] Crawford who was the husband of Jane Mangum, John's (Rev. War Patriot) daughter. In 1860, Laney is only two pages away from George and Jane Mangum Crawford (on page 204) and other Crawford Families. Also in 1860, both pages 204 (Crawford page) and 206 (Ewing page) are Fulton Post Office, the intermediate page is a different Post Office, Ryan's Well. This may indicate that the families on the last two Fulton pages were actually closer to each other than the order of the pages makes it appear.

1860 US: Fulton Post Office, District 7, Itawamba, Mississippi, listed twice:
      P. 206, 15 Aug 1860, family 1356:
      John L. Ewing, 40, farmer, $600, $800, MS.
      Laney Ewing, 36, MS.
      Mary J. Miller, 30, MS.
      George Corothers, 12, MS.
      P. 235, 21 Aug. 1850, family 1569, neighbors are different:
      John E. Ewing, 38, farmer, $1000, $1000, AL.
      Laney Ewing, 36, AL.
      Mary J. Miller, 21, AL.
George M. Corothers, 12, farm labor, MS.
Presumably father is on p. 236, family 1573:
      John M. Ewing, 67, farmer, $150, $260, VA.
      Mary A. Ewing, 54, TN.
Gilbert Ewing, 19, farm laborer, MS.
      Doctor Simpson Ewing, 12, MS.
      Notes:
      1. In 1860, both pages 204 (Crawford page) and 206 (Ewing page) are Fulton Post Office, the intermediate page is a different Post Office, Ryan's Well. This may indicate that the families on
the last two Fulton pages were actually closer to each other than the order of the pages makes it appear.
      2. Next door to John M. are presumably some of his sons including William Ewing with many Children, and Moses Ewing with a young family.

      1880 US: E.D. 81, Johnson County, Texas, 9 Jun 1880, p. 18b, household 149:
John E. Ewing, 59, farmer, AL VA TN.
Lany, 55, wife, AL SC SC

      3. The following is a small excerpt of a larger listing (see Samuel Newton Adair's notes for full transcription), which was received in digital form from Don and Caroline Smith, 2003. Regardless of the title - "Family Records of Samuel Newton Adair" – I am not sure if this is really a transcript of records kept by Samuel Newton Adair or not. Some death dates given for some of the individuals are after the date Samuel Newton Adair himself died. I spoke in person with Collins Chapman of Mesa, Arizona, in Feb. of 2006. He did not recognize it. Collins' family is the source of most of the biographical information on Samuel and Collin's mother was responsible for the autobiography of Samuel Newton Adair who dictated it to her. The following came to me as an addendum to a typed copy of that autobiography; however, I have now seen a portion of the original handwritten dictation and find no such attachment. The following therefore has no documented source that I can find thus far and should be used with caution:
[A.] "Father: Thomas Adair; Mother: Rebeca Brown; Children:
      Samuel Jefferson Adair
      Fairby Adair
      Margaret Adair
      Eliza Adair
      Sally Adair
      Thomas Adair
      George Washington Adair
      Mary Ann Adair
      John Wesley Adair
      Laney Adair"
[B.] "Thomas Adair – Married Rebeca Brown:
Samuel Jefferson Adair - Born at Lawrence Co., South Carolina, March 28, 1806. Baptized by Elder John Dowdle, Nov. 27, 1845. Confirmed by Elder John Dowdle, Nov. 30, 1845. Ordained an Elder by Daniel Thomas, a High Priest by John Young in 1855. Married Jamima Mangum. Filled a mission to Southern Utah in 1857. Migrated Mississippi to Nauvoo, Illinois on Jan. 10, 1846. Died at Nutrioso, Apache County, Arizona, July 6, 1889.
Fairby Adair - married Daniel Clark
Margaret Adair - married William Richey
Eliza Adair - married John Price
Sally Adair - married William Mangum. Died of cholera on the Plains in 1852.
Thomas Adair - married Fanny Rogers. Died at Showlow, Navajo County, Arizona.
George Washington Adair - married Miriam Billingsley. Died at Orderville, Utah.
Mary Ann Adair - born at Pickens co., Alabama, July 5, 1824. Baptized by James Richey, 1844. Confirmed by Daniel Thomas in 1844. Married John Mangum. Endowed at Endowment House, Salt Lake City. Died of asthma at Pahreah, Utah.
John Wesley Adair - born in 1820. Died at Nutrioso, Apache County, Arizona. Was a member of the Mormon Battalion.
Laney Adair - married John Winn."

      BIRTH:
      1. I use cemetery record quoted below. Variant would be the 1877 temple work done for her by her sister Mary Ann where she notes simply 1825 in Alabama. The vagueness of the temple record would perhaps indicate some tentativeness in Mary Ann's knowledge of the actual date.

      MARRIAGE:
      1. Ancestry.com shows under "Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900," a marriage listing between Nancy Adair and John E. Ewing, 13 Jul 1843, Itawamba Co., MS. "Itawamba County, Mississippi Marriage Book 1," entry 250, transcription per the website for the Itawamba County, Mississippi Historical Soicety online archives shows: "John E. Ewing and Sary Adair, 13 Jul 1843, by Saml. Adair." I have not seen the actual book, but it appears the penmanship of Laney Adair's first name is hard to read leading to interpretation to Nancy or Sary – both of which could probably be read as Laney/Lany if the transcriber had known her true name. It would be worthwhile to actually see the actual image. 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses confirm Laney as the proper forename. Samuel Adair would be the clergy brother of Laney.

      2. Some poorly done family histories indicate Joseph Mangum married a second wife by the name of Emmeline Laney on 23 Jun 1851 in Utah. This is confusion arising from many not knowing that Arta Hannah's middle name was Emeline (see land transaction from Itawamba Co., MS, 1843 as noted above). Later, under the LDS Law of Adoption, Joseph appears to have been also sealed to Laney Adair in the St. George Temple per the LDS Ordinance Index, which has a listing of a marriage sealing between Joseph Mangum and Laney Ann Adair 7 Jun 1877 SGEOR per FHL film 170595 - 2018 with Joseph Eslin Mangum (Joseph's nephew and son of Joseph's brother John Mangum) and his wife Mariah Lucinda Heath acting as proxies for the deceased couple. Under the Law of Adoption, the deceased couple did not necessarily have to had been married in earthly life and often living relatives would arbitrarily matchmake these marriages to afford an unmarried individual afterlife marital bliss and increase. This appears to be the case with Joseph Mangum and Laney Adair. In reality, Laney was still alive living in Texas with her husband John Ellis Ewing and does not die until 1881/1882. The family evidently had lost contact and believed Laney was dead. A relative also performed a baptism for the dead for her just a few days before the 7 Jun 1877 sealing. Being that she was alive, both temple ordinances for the dead would be void and of no efficacy.

      DEATH:
      1. Many LDS pedigrees show this individual dead in 1846. I find no documentation for it – in fact she shows up in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses. It appears she was probably childless. It appears that perhaps her siblings has lost contact with her because her sister Mary Ann did temple work in behalf of the dead in 1877 in the St. George, Utah temple. The same LDS genealogies which evidently have been copied incorrectly over and over show a husband vaguely named as John Winn, who should be John Ewing.

      2. Genforum has the following note from Nita Reed 13 Dec 2000 : "Sary Nancy Adair was born July 2, 1824 in Frankfort Co. AL and died June 29, 1881 in Cleburne, Texas Johnson Co. and is buried in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. John E. Ewing, her husband, is an ancestor of mine. They had no children." My comments: The place, time, and the fact of no children look correct even though the name of Sary Nancy Adair is obviously wrong. Timing of birth is obviously in the right time period; however, Nita is incorrect in regard to Franklin Co. since her tombstone says Tuscaloosa Co., Ala. Also note her husband was still alive in 1900 with his second wife for whom he shows 17 years of marriage in the census. This would confirm that Laney was deceased by 1883.

      3. The cemetery record below of Laney's death in 1873 is in conflict with the 1880 census, which shows her alive. Nita Reed's genforum note quoted above indicates a death in 1881, which is more in line with the 1880 census; however, it is undocumented. The tombstone reads June 29, 188? with the last digit of the year unclear in the photo I have on file. As also noted herein, her sister did LDS temple ordinance work for her in 1877 believing her to be dead, which would indicate her siblings had lost contact with her after leaving Mississippi in the 1840s.

      BURIAL:
      1. Http://www.rootsweb.com/~txjohnso/cemeteries/cleburnemem35.html burial listings at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery of Johnson County, Texas:
      "Ewing, John E., Jan. 10, 1822 – Apr. 02, 1905 B 36 L 1 > Mason."
      "Ewing, Laney July 02, 1824 – May 22, 1873 B 35 L 9 > Wife of J E Ewing > Born in Tuscalousa Co., Alabama."
      John Ewing's brother and sister-in-law:
      "Ewing, William July 04, 1825 – May 26, 1899 B 35 L 14."
      "Ewing, Martha A., Dec. 09, 1829 – July 10, 1873 B 35 L 9 > Wife of William Ewing."

      2. Tombstone photo on file with me clearly shows an old tombstone that looks to be original. It reads different than the cemetery record quoted above. Transcription: "Laney Ewing, Wife of J.E. Ewing, born in Tuscaloosa Co., Ala July 2, 1824, died June 29, 188?" The photo is unclear as to the last digit of the death year, but it definitely is not 1873 as noted in the cemetery record.
