      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. For life story, see "My Life Story" by Wayne B. Hales, 1976.

      2. In the execution of father's last will and testament, this individual shown as living at Spanish Fork, Utah on 22 Jun 1889.

      3. Per "The Sons of Brigham" by T. Earl Pardoe, published by BYU Alumni Association, a short biography of Wayne Brockbank Hales contained on page 349 gives the following biographical info on his parents: "Jonathan Hyrum Hales born May 25, 1861 in Spanish Fork, son of Charles Henry Hales, Utah pioneer of 1852, one of first settlers of Spanish Fork. Married Nov. 16, 1882. Member of Nauvoo Legion, builder and missionary. Died: Jan. 21, 1922 in Provo Utah." And: "Martha Ann Brockbank, born Sep. 5, 1861 in Spanish Fork, Utah; daughter of Issac Brockbank; Utah pioneer of 1852. Died Jan. 5, 1905 when Wayne was but twelve."

      4. For an interesting account of life in Spanish Fork from about 1861 to 1900, read biography of Eliza Brockbank within this database.

      5. Letter addressed by Charles H. and Julia A. Hales to some of his sons concerning his arrest for polygamy. Apparently the authorities may have been looking for their son Charles Henry Hales Jr. and confused the two even though the senior Charles was polygamous. The original of this letter is in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections of the Harold B. Lee Library of the Brigham Young University, Wayne B. Hales Collection, UA 5672 Box 11, "Hales Family History Box 1 of 2". In the following transcription I have retained the original spelling, punctuation, and capitalization:
      "Spanish Fork Jany. 24th 1888
To Hyrum Hales Wm P and H. B Hales
      Dear Children:
I understand from Hattie that she wrote to Ann last Friday that I had been arrested I thought that I had better write you a few lines that you might not be left in suspence in relation to it. I heard a light tapping on my door last friday morning about 5 Oclock This was repeated three times before I answered I asked what was wanted he said that he was a deputy Marshall and wanted to come in. allright. Says I as soon as I can make a light I will let you in are you Mr Hales says he yes say I who else is it this was before I let him in as soon as he came in he looked at me say he waht is your age I am in my seventy first year Says he Mr Hales if I had Known htat you had been so old a man I neer would have taken the papers for your arrest he said he had an attachment for us to take us to Provo right away says I you do not intend to take us away now before we can get some breakfast he said no he he had to be back to Provo by ten Oclock, but say he I want you to go over (page 2) to the other house he had read his papers to me and Subpeoned youre Mother as she lay in bed Says I want do you want with her you cannot make her testify and besides she has been Sick and is only just getting around and it might do her an injury if it becomes necessary for her to appear she shall be forth coming so he said no more but we went over and I called Frank up and then another deputy showed himself that had been standing at the east end of the house waiting developements I suppose we went in and France dressed and came out he subpeoned her and Frank for witneses and then I asked them to go over with me and I would make a fire he says that he wanted me to be responsible for her allright I said so I made a good fire and I sat and talked with Deputy Norrel untill daylight as friendly as could he he said that he was from Jackson Missisippi however I started Frank up for John Y and Andrew ? to come and go my bondsmen so when breakfast was ready I asked them to sit up and take some breakfast withus so they threw off their raps and took breakfast with us and while at the table Norrel said to me that he did not think (Page 3) that I would have any trouble that they would not make me any and if I was brought before the Grand Jury they the Jury would be instructed they acted very gentlemanly with us all through they wnet and arrest Sennett before comeing to me but nothing has been done with him yet they had driven up and hitched their team to Hoplas barn where he keeps his buggy and I never heard a thing of them untill they tap'd on the door when we were ready they drove up to Frances gate and she came out says one of them have you a quilt to put around you the bottom of the buggy is open like it was made of slats I simply mention this to show you that they did not act vindictive or mean but was willing to make us as comfortable as possible so she spread her quilt and we sat in that rolling it around our legs and feet and had a fine ride to Provo and then our dinner at Uncle Sams expence I told Frank to Hitch up our team as soon as his chores was done and come over and bring us back I dont think I had been in the commissioner court more than an hour when John Andrew Fred and Jim came over in a carriage we had commenced business before they got there as soon as the deputies [page 4] had made their returns he asked me if I wanted a Lawyer I told him that I thought it was not necessary he said if I did not wish to consult with a Lawyer he said that he would send an Officer with me I told him again that I thought it was not necessary are you then ready for trial I answered that I was but Frank had not yet come so Alonso Argile had come with his two women and his bondsmen Ben Argile and Bill Furgeson he bound Alonzo over to appear before the Grand Jury under one thousand dollar bond. recess was taken then untill half past one and then he called up Frances and Frank to testify in my case I have not room for the questions and answers in this sheet but suffice it to say that after he was through questoning of them he says to me I have not evidence enough to hold you Says he your are discharged I thanked him so I have gotten clear without its costing me one cent the commissioner told me that if he known that I had been so old a man he would never have issued the papers for my arrest your Mother health is improveing we remain as ever your affectionate Father and Mother
Charles H and Julia A Hales
[Postscript on side of page 3.] We hope this will find you all well
[Postscript on side of page 4.] The commissioner said he thought it was one of my sons instead of me"
