- RESEARCH_NOTES:
1. There are more children in this family; I only list those with some relationship to my family. One of the daughters, Martha Berry, was a plural wife of John Doyle Lee. Martha became dissatisfied with John and separated from her husband at Harmony and around July 24, 1858. She took her children to her mother at Kanarra and left them, while she married Dennis Dorrity as his third wife and moved with him to Kanosh.
2. Reviewed Rootsweb.com Worldconnect 7 Dec 2002. Database ":1901176" indicates that his sources include: Albemarle Co, VA Deed Book 14, p. 324; 13, p. 36 1798-1802; 12, pp. 127, 539; 11, p. 236; Personal tax lists; Marriage bonds prior to 1806 #1 p. 36; Will of George Berry probated 1849, Glasgow, Barren, KY. [George is father to Jesse.]
3. Entry for son William Shanks Berry in "Pioneers and Prominent Men," p. 752: "William Shanks Berry, (son of Jesse W. Berry and Armelia Shanks). Born Feb 3, 1838, in Weakley county, Tenn. Came to Utah Oct. 1849, William Gully company, with William Hyde fifty... (Lists children and marriages.) Family home Kanarraville, Utah. Killed in Cane creek massacre of Gibbs and Berry Aug. 10, 1884, at Condor's farm in Lewis county, Tenn."
BIOGRAPHY:
1. See wife's notes for more information.
BIRTH:
1. Most entries in Ancestry.com 7 Dec 2002 concur that birth date was 9 Jan 1791 and parents are George Berry and Sarah Clack or Clark; however, locations seem to focus on three areas: Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky; Albemarle County, Virginia; and Barren Co., Kentucky. Ordinance Index 1.02: 1948 sealing uses 9 Jan 1791 at Barren Co., KY; 1878 endowment uses same date with no location; 1879 sealing uses same date in VA. I favor the Virginia location since his son John William Berry's 1880 census indicates father was born in VA. Other children of Jesse could also be verified in the 1880 census for reported birth location of Jesse. Note from information with death records below, Jan 1792 looks more accurate. I use 9 Jan 1792.
MARRIAGE:
1. Per wife's notes as quoted from the daughters of Utah Pioneer's book "Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude." DUP source uses 8 Feb 1820 at Lebanon, Wilson, TN; however, source below is better. I use date from ord. Ind. and place from DUP.
2. Online Ordinance Index FHL film M519853 - extracted marriage record for Wilson Co., TN from 1819-1821: Jesse Berry and Milly Shanks, 18 Feb 1820.
DEATH:
1. FHL book "Nauvoo Deaths and Burials, 1839-1845," by Lyndon W. Cook, 1994, BYU Provo Library; Hist/Rel BX8677.73.C772n: Jesse Woods Berry - 6 Aug 1844.
2. "Nauvoo Record of Deaths," pg. 3: "Jesse Berry, Aug. 6, 1844, 52 y., 6 months, fever, 19."
3. The Nauvoo Land and Records Office has a copy of a page entitled "Temple Ordinance performed at the instance of." It doesn't tell what temple and it is handwritten. It lists Jesse Berry, d. 12 Aug 1844, b. 1792. It appears to be probably after his death and the information given appears to be sketchy on the part of the informant.
BURIAL:
1. Old Nauvoo Burial Ground, 780 East 2300 North Sonora Township, Inventory of Markers and Graves Etc.: Jesse Woods Berry, Nauvoo RIN# 2276, wife, Armelia Shanks Berry, b. 9 Jan 1791, d. 6 Aug 1844, 56 years old, Information source code: A, E-1, I, L, no stone. [Note the obvious contradiction of the age of 56 not aligning with the reported birth year of 1791.]
