      BIOGRAPHY:
      1. The book "Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude" by the daughters of Utah Pioneers (photo accompanies article): "Hilma Caroline Johnson Hales Simpson, b. 19 Dec 1860 at Norrkoping, Sweden, d. 6 May 1945 at Spanish Fork, Utah, Utah, parents are Nels Johnson and Johanna Peterson, pioneer of Sep 1863 of the Murdock Co. Hilma was born in Sweden and came to Utah at the age of three with her mother and other siblings. After entering the Salt Lake Valley, the family moved to Spanish Fork, Utah to settle. At the age of five she was placed in a home that had promised good care, but her mother saw stripes on her body and she was taken home again. At the age of 18 she married Stephen Hales and they had eight children. Stephen died when her youngest was two. She succeeded in providing for her family by doing nursing work and farming with her boys. She was optimistic, and when asked about her life would reply with 'fine and dandy'; a phrase that has become a family byword. In a biography written by Wallace Hales, a son, it says she was a Daughter of the Utah Pioneers in 1936. She married Robert Temple Simpson after 17 years of widowhood. Hilma Caroline Johnson Hales Simpson passed away in Spanish Fork, at the age of 84."
